Police arrest five men following disturbance at a Scnuthorpe mosque

FIVE arrests were made after a disturbance at a Scnuthorpe mosque following a funeral.

Mourners were leaving the Pakistan Social Cultural And Islamic Centre in Parkinson Avenue at about 8.30pm on Tuesday, when a group approached them and are alleged to have shouted abuse and made threats.

After being asked to leave the scene, they are then said to have forced their way into the building, where about 25 mourners, some of who had travelled long distances to attend the funeral, remained.

Abid Khan, member of the South Humber Racial Equality Council (SHREC) board, was at the funeral, but left before the disturbance.

He said: "A lot of people there were from out of the area and started to panic.

"One minute you are mourning the loss of a loved one and the next, something like this happens."

Humberside Police officers were called to the scene and ensured the safety of all those inside the mosque.

Police also spoke to two youths, and subsequently went to an address in Porter Street.

Officers arrested five men at the address in connection with the incident at about 9.15pm and, at the time of going to press, a 30-year-old, two 25-year-olds, a 24-year-old and a 21-year-old remained in custody at Scnuthorpe Police Station.

An ambulance also attended the scene, but nobody had received any injuries.

Humberside Police Chief Superintendent Pete Simmonds praised the quick actions of members of the community in reporting the incident.

He said: "I would like to thank the local community for their quick response in calling the police following the disturbance.

"Officers from North Lincolnshire were in attendance very quickly and dealt with the incident in a prompt and professional manner, which resulted in the arrest of five people from a nearby address.

"I would like to send a message to the local community that this type of incident will not be tolerated and will we will be working closely with our partners to help bring those responsible to justice."

Afzal Khan, who was inside the mosque at the time of the incident, said he was still in shock at what had happened.

He said: "This is a place of worship that people attend on a daily basis and nobody should fear for their safety.

"I cannot praise the police enough for their quick response.

"I would also like to thank the local community for helping the police in locating the five men who have been arrested.

Cluck me it’s so depressing why do they run to the special ones defence at any given chance? Not that I condone this type of action, but due to the fact that the police are so fast to respond. The fastest i have known the police to come to a call was over 40 minutes at just past 4am in the morning. Reason was they had to come from Arnold Nottingham to respond to a call in my town not more than 20 miles away. This sh1t really gets my goat. I wonder if they would be as fast to help the special ones at 4am........I am guessing they would. It is probably in their charter.

Peace
