EDL leader vows to stick to agreed march routeSponsored by By MATTHEW REVILLE Published on Tue Dec 07 08:47:32 GMT 2010 THE leader of protest group the English Defence League has vowed their march in Peterborough on Saturday (11th December) will be peaceful. The pledge from EDL leader Guramit Singh comes after fears were expressed to police that the marchers could enter predominantly Muslim areas of the city to cause trouble. Mr Singh said: “That is a load of rubbish. “We have people coming from all over the country and are expecting between 3,000 and 4,000 people. “This has been thoroughly planned and our route has been made public the whole time. “We are really happy with the route and our discussions with Cambridgeshire police have been really productive.” Mr Singh said: “The EDL will be urging everyone to stick to the route and will be sending an email out to every member on Thursday telling them that.” The protest march will start outside the Peterborough United ground before finishing at Lower Bridge Street, where they will congregate for a static protest and listen to speeches by EDL leaders and local representatives. The EDL is opposed to what it calls the spread of Islamic extremism in the country. Speaking before a youth engagement meeting about the march at Gladstone Community Centre last week, Muslim Asif Ali (25) said: “The biggest concern for us is the policing in the areas near the mosque. “I believe they have the right to express their beliefs as long as they stay on the routes agreed with the police. Hopefully, there will be no trouble.” Superintendent Paul Fullwood said: “We understand there may be concerns about this event and that people may be worried about the impact on them as individuals and the wider community. “As part of our work to deal with these concerns, we will be increasing patrols in and around the city centre. “A significant team of local officers will provide a visible presence at locations such as the train station and neighbourhoods close to the centre.” If the predicted 4,000 EDL supporters turn up, it would make it one of their biggest marches of all time. Mr Singh added: “We have had more people before - the most is 5,000 - but this will be the biggest static demonstration at the end we have ever had. “It is a very central route and has clear start and end points. It is exactly what we wanted.” On the same day, a counter protest has been organised by the Peterborough Trades Union Council (TUC). It will begin at midday at the Bishop’s Road car park, move along Rivergate and arrive at the Key Theatre before the EDL arrive at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, in Lower Bridge Street near the Rivergate Shopping Centre. The Key Theatre and the court will both be closed on the day. Counter-protest organiser Ron Graves said children should stay away from the protests, but said he will not turn away older youngsters wanting to take part. He said: “We do not want children coming along. We would say that sixth formers should be ok, but anyone younger should think twice. “But if anyone turns up, we will not turn them away because we would rather look after them.” Last week, at the Gladstone Community Centre event, two Muslim preachers urged city youngsters to stay away from both the protests. Mr Graves said: “We fully understand and respect their view. “However, we think it is better to have any young Muslim people in a safe counter-protest than out there on their own.” Mr Graves will be one of three speakers on behalf of the TUC at a public meeting tomorrow, where he will explain why they are holding the counter march and rally. The meeting will take place at the Bourges/Viersen Rooms at the Town Hall in Bridge Street from 7pm to 9pm. Protests impact transport services A NUMBER of bus services near the march routes will be diverted on Saturday during the marches. Temporary road closures mean bus stops near the Rivergate Centre and the Woolworths building in Bridge Street will be closed. The city council’s park and ride service will be free on Saturday and Sunday. British by birth, English by the grace of God. “St George he was for England, and before he killed the dragon, he drank a pint of English ale, out of an English flagon.” "In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot." | |

like how the counter protesters are getting their excuses in early. 'We'd have had loads more, but we didnt want the youngsters to get hurt.' Suppose thats also an admittance that they're a bit rubbish really that they have to rely on people that are too young to understand. Cant wait to get there, even though im on my lonesome again after me old man let me down |
