Does anyone else remember having to sing in School assembleys? At my old Primary School we used to sing, Jerusalem, God save the Queen and others. Anyone know if it stills goes on? or is that racist as well now :(

I remember singing them, and having a little hymn book. I used to enjoy some of them, especially the patriotic ones like 'I vow to thee my country', and Christmas Carols. Some of them got the words slightly changed though by the boys at our school, but it was all part of the tradition. :D

My kids tell me they don't sing hymns at school now, but I'm planning on buying a Christmas carol CD this week to play over Christmas, to redress the balance a bit.

Sussex 66, how old are you? I'm only 18 years old and we didn't do any singing in years 7 to 11 but in year 3 to 6 we sang hymns, didn't have hymn books though. Scott Lee, what is your signature from? an EDL demo?

When I was in year 3 - 6 (2000-2004) we sang hyms at my school, got to around year 5 when some of the boys started to stop doing it because people started saying 'God doesn't exist.' Heard from a friend last year that they no longer sing hyms at my old school. Upset me that did. :(
I may criticize the EDL a bit, but I support the cause 100%.
Armchair division. I may not go to demos, but I'm there in spirit.

I'm forty something - I forget exactly what. B-)

We used to sing hymns at secondary school, but maybe that was because it was an old fashioned grammar school. I don't think my brother sang hymns at his comprehensive school, apart from Kumbaya maybe.

And this thread has reminded me that 'Morning has broken' was one of the hymns that got changed...

Praise for the sweetness,
Of the wet fart,
Sprung in completeness
Where his feet pass.

That used to have me in stitches every time I heard it - I thought it was hilarious.

My Nephew told me they don't sing anymore. Kind of sad really, me and my friends used to have a laugh.

I take it none of you have kids at primary school/high school? fcuking scary! You just wouldn't believe the sh1t they're taught now. It's NOTHING like when we were kids, NOTHING!

Do you know that 3rd Year RE is about Islam, 100% Islam, nothing else? My daughter has books on Islam. Tory MP's are calling for the UK national religion to be declared as Islam and our schools are indoctrinating our children! FACT!
