Although the whole area (shaded red and unshaded) appears quite large it isn't really and the existing building is not that big either. I've just done these images which may make things a little clearer: ![]()

Sumits got to give, every time I blink theres a new fcukin mosque bein built. Ye just feel damn useless as the councelors are the ones approvin it and we just have to stand aside and watch. All I want is for these b*stards to move to Ashford square and get the full experience of what they approve. |

British by birth, English by the grace of God. “St George he was for England, and before he killed the dragon, he drank a pint of English ale, out of an English flagon.” "In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."

In Britain do they have council votes on controversial building proposals? Like in the States when the Mosque at Ground Zero was trying to get approval it had to be voted on by the City Board? Also does the Mayor (or equiv) have the right to veto the approval? It seems like whoever is giving the go ahead is not addressing a good portion of the people's concern's. |

Seriously? There is not like a local board who votes on this stuff? People who live in the town do not get to control what get's built? |

The whole system is not really geared up to protect the interests of the local residents. Developments in the interests of 'community enrichment' as dictated by the unelected EU officials are 'encouraged', promoted and preferred and this is why you may often have read of the biggest threat to the future of our country is the EU. The thing is, from where I'm sitting, we have a fight against islaisation and a fight against EU 'intergration'. What complicates matters even further is that the EU WANTS MORE islamics in every EU country. In the near future, the events of the present will be viewed with incredulity by the whole world. We, as a nation, have been betrayed, lied to, abandoned and deceived by elected leaders. Just wait for the civil war. |

The below rambling hystrionics is from a male Doctor who is one of the main Trustees of this mosque, the Eastbourne Islamic Cultural Centre. He spends time at Interfaith meetings and often is the one who vocally represents the Eastbourne Islamic Cultural Centre! Below he ranting about how his homeland should be run. I don't know much about Mauritius except that it is approx 50% and approx 16% Islam, which probably doesn't bode too well with muslims! He doesn't sound too happy does he, lol. (There is another rant of his where he and his Mauritian counterparts are not being allowed to vote in Mauritius (whilst they are living in the UK), will dig it out.) Shame he and his ilk don't adhere to their own advice! The irony! DEMOCRACY ELECTION WITHOUT REAL MANIFESTO BY Dr Taleb Durgahee drtdurg@yahoo.com • Voting day is so close but there has been only piecemeal announcement of what parties will do if elected. There has been a tit for tat policy statement almost in response of each other. Yes, there has been formal announcement too but only a list of possibilities. There has not been a single announcement of how democracy will be strengthened together with our institutions to combat corruption and lack of trust in the government. Where is democracy within the manifesto? Where is institutional reform? How can a fairer Mauritius be built for the future? Where is the fight against poverty, better hospitals, better security and better schools? • • It is heartbreaking that none of the political parties are putting the people first. If people were first, all parties would argue for Freedom of Information Act and the Right to Know so that there is full transparency and better communication between the government and the governed. The population is deliberately hijacked into thinking about coalition, personalities and caste issues. This is fudging the election and hoodwinking people into insomnia so that people do not ask for their fundamental rights. • • The politicians are clever. They do not want people to know what they do and who spends where, when and how much. In which bank accounts the money from the treasury goes to? People will never know as we have not got the official right to know where our money is going. At present, it is all confidential and secret. It should not be like this. The people must know, have a democratic right to know and have the right to question the expenditure. Millions are spent on small projects without due justification raising eyebrows about sudden ministerial millionaires emerging out of the woods. People know they are being swindled but they do not appear to be challenging the outgoing ministers. Why? Are the politicians so skilful in diverting their attention away from such fundamental rights? Has the population not evolved enough to realise that the root of the problem is this denial of fundamental democratic right? Is the election only a dose of hypnotic hype marching the electorate to the ballot box in a state of somnambulism? Will the electorate wake up on Friday and realise they have not voted for their democratic rights to be upheld? • • What all the parties are offering is maintenance of the status quo in terms of secrecy so that people will not know the truth and they do not want to arm people with a mechanism to uncover the truth. The expenses of The President, Members of Parliament, Ministers and Permanent secretaries should be the prime question during the election; but there has not been a word spoken in this direction. • • I urge the people to wake up and ask about transparency of expenses. Ask ministers to publish and document all their expenses and money they have received while in office. The case of Rama Sithanen is a good example where he is sacked from the party and government in an effort to apportion blame and unworthiness. People should reflect on the importance of the office of Minister of Finance and its closeness to the office of Prime Minister. They are the two sides of the same coin. • • If one side is rotten, then the coin is not valid and should not be in circulation. Think about it! Rama could not have taken all the decisions whether good or bad. Yes, he disagreed with the appointment of a suspect Governor of the Bank of Mauritius. This is surely good to reinforce discussion and better decision-making. Democracy at work within government is good and some issues must be brought into the public arena rather than quietly towing party line. But, the fact remains we will never know who took what decision because in the Mauritian democracy we have no way of knowing. This is not democracy, it is autocracy. This is why our institutions are frail and we must strengthen them so that we are aware of who has done what before casting our votes. • • Corruption thrives on secrecy and brown envelope approach. Our institutions at the moment is open to this brown envelope approach because we, the people, do not have access to vital information, we do not know what is being done in our name and what evil deeds are encrypted on our seal of approval. This is unacceptable. Many countries practising such secrecy have forced their population to revolution. Mauritians should be allowed to evolve. Autocratic and revolution provoking practices should be abolished now. The government should open up channels of fairer and better communication with the people so that people can begin to believe that we live in a democracy. But, this will never happen if the population does not show greater awareness of its fundamental democratic rights. We all know power can corrupt and we should not confer more power to politicians without some checks and balances. This means a new system of accountability to the people. • I urge the people to vote with common sense and not be lulled into thinking that politicians can solve our problems. We are in a better position to come up with appropriate solutions and the government should empower the people to participate in policy implementation through community commissioners. Let the people participate, let the people solve their problems and let the people live with democracy. http://nn-no.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=77815893945&topic=14321 You are right Christine, I totally agree with you. Sometimes I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel as it is apparent more each day that governments, not just ours, but globally, are on the same roller coaster, going down the same road of dismantling their their own country's infrastructure, a road to destruction. Feck I wish people would f wake up......sigh |

Certainly looks like it! I can't see one resident from Ashford Square that supports it on the list! LINK Diabolical really, that the people, the residents, the ones who have to live there, at the end of the day, have no say whatsoever, and that their concerns are totally ignored. The councillors should be ashamed of themselves. SHAME ON THEM. The (interloping) Interfaithers lol in Eastbourne, of which the ranting Dr Taleb Durgahee is one! So the original function has changed? A Classroom is surely a learning facility, which according to their original application they reassured that the usage would be the same as the existing, which was basically a mosque and would only be used once a week on a Fridays for approx 1 1/2 hours for prayers! LINK Quote from document: "The existing use is a mosque. The proposal is for a replacement mosque so there is no change of use" LINK No Classroom or Library can be seen on the original plan of the existing building: LINK |

You must have achieved top grades at Slueth School! Maybe the residents should go for the more subtle protests during and after the mosque is built? I'd suggest a mass fry-up of BBQ pork sausages with the aroma of sizzling bacon gently wafting through open kitchen windows for a start. |

The latest comment from one of its supporeters on The Eastbourne Mosque in the Local newspaper. "15East Born Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 12:49 PM Eastbourne residents (almost all Indian restaurants, almost all kebab shops, certain hotels, certain independent retail shops, hospital) will be pleased to get permission to have a better place of worship at last. They work hard to keep Eastbourne supplied with goods and services and therefore keep Eastbourne a premier tourist destination. They will not be doing anything comparable to church bells. Besides, the re-construction is bound to boost the local economy. The fears of the objectors are probably influenced by certain media but they should not be too fearful just by that. " Like the comment on " Church Bells " especially !! |

"What is our policy?... To wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime. What is our aim?... Victory... Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terror. Victory, however long and hard the road may be. For without victory, there is no survival".
