From http://www.jihadwatch.org/2010/11/leaked-cables-turkey-wants-to-take-back-andalusia-and-avenge-the-defeat-at-the-siege-of-vienna-in-16.html

Leaked cables: Turkey wants "to take back Andalusia and avenge the defeat at the siege of Vienna in 1683"

Direct confirmation of what we have been saying for years about Erdogan's plans for Turkey. "Diplomatic Cables Reveal US Doubts about Turkey's Government," from Spiegel, November 28 (thanks to Ian):

[...] The leaked diplomatic cables reveal that US diplomats are skeptical about Turkey's dependability as a partner. The leadership in Ankara is depicted as divided and permeated by Islamists.

US diplomats have grave doubts about Turkey's dependability. Secret or confidential cables from the US Embassy in Ankara describe Islamist tendencies in the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. [...]

The Americans are also worried about Davutoglu's alleged neo-Ottoman visions. A high-ranking government adviser warned in discussions, quoted by the US diplomats, that Davutoglu would use his Islamist influence on Erdogan, describing him as "exceptionally dangerous." According to the US document, another adviser to the ruling AKP party remarked, probably ironically, that Turkey wanted "to take back Andalusia and avenge the defeat at the siege of Vienna in 1683."

The US diplomats write that many leading figures in the AKP were members of a Muslim fraternity and that Erdogan had appointed Islamist bankers to influential positions. He gets his information almost exclusively from newspapers with close links to Islamists, they reported. The prime minister, the cables continue, has surrounded himself with an "iron ring of sycophantic (but contemptuous) advisors" and presents himself as the "Tribune of Anatolia."

Yet David Cameron is still campaigning vigorously for Turkish EU membership! WTF is going on?
Does he know about this situation or not? If not why not?
If he does know why is he still so keen on Turkish membership? Is he a secret Muslim?

Thanks for the post on this, Bamiyan. It confirms what a lot of people fear over here. It is time to start waking up my neighbours. I will get it translated and start to circulate to the Spanish press.

I share your concern about Turkish membership of the EU, and think it would be a fast track to disaster. However, I don't think Cameron is a secret Muslim. I think he knows that Germany and France are against Turkish membership, so he can afford to look like he supports Turkey. The Germans have a lot of experience of Turkish immigration, and it has been a big problem in their society, as Angela Merkel recently said about multi-culturalism being a disaster.

The biggest hurdle for Turkey joining the EU is that regarding the division of Cyprus, where there are still outstanding obligations to fulfil, ones they find hard to swallow. What we need to make sure is that our Politicians don't cave in and settle for some compromise on Cyprus.

Let's hope these problems are insurmountable - for the sake of the european people.

How about this for a compromise:

All EU & National politcians in favour of Turkey joining the EU must spend 5 years in Turkey followed by 5 years in the badlands of Afghanistan (because that'll be the future of the EU) to gain some first hand experience of life under sharia? At no time during this period are they allowed any special privileges or considerations but lead their lives as poor people in poor areas to be ignored and abused by those holding power. Good idea?
