Nottingham railway station evacuated due to suspicious package

HUNDREDS of rail passengers were evacuated after a suspicious package was found at Nottingham railway station.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene by British Transport Police after the package was found just before 5pm today.

The station was evacuated at 5.41pm and all trains running into and out of the station have been halted.

A police car has also blocked off Station Street to cars and pedestrians.

Nick Rock and Adam Clark were due to catch a train back to Southampton University after visiting their girlfriends in Nottingham.

They had been waiting outside in the cold for 45 minutes after being told the station was being evacuated.

"Some man just walked up to us and said 'it is being evacuated don't go in' and the police closed off the streets.

"We might have to wait until tomorrow morning to go back because it takes four-and-a-half hours."

Sahrish Khan was travelling back home to Sheffield after a holiday to Venice with her partner, who did not want to be named.

"We tried to go inside and they wouldn't let us and apparently there's a bomb squad here," she said.

"We've been waiting half an hour.

"It is cold out here and to be fair I think they should arrange buses."

Any rail passengers who would like to know about delayed train services should call Network Rail on 08457 484950.
