A day in the life of an EDL Nuneaton Steward; Steward, Janitorial Attendant , providing an extra barrier.

After the euphoria of yesterday where the patriotic EDL held numerous demos all over the country. We showed that if you treat us with respect, let us march there will be minimal disturbances (apart from what the agent provocateurs get up to).

The EDL are not remotely like what is portrayed by the MSM, UAF and the HNH. When are the authorities going to look at the UAF and HNH for their continuous attempts to incite a riots/race riots by stirring up trouble? This is a very serious issue and needs addressing immediately.

So onto the day in the life as an EDL Nuneaton steward.

Firstly I must point out that normally I am a flag waving enthusiast at demos, so yesterday was completely different for me. The London coach got there a bit late, we couldn't find the coach meeting point, even with maps and Sat Nav we found ourselves in the middle of nowhere and ended up doing a U turn in some residential street. Time was getting on, so we decided just to head straight into the centre of town. We encountered no police on the way in (we were hoping to get some assistance by being pulled over and led), and we actually stopped straight outside the U.A.F meeting point. The look on their wee faces with a coach load of patriots right there was a sight to behold, their sphincter muscles must still be twitching today. The numbers on our full coach alone outnumbered the UAF supporters - it was hilarious.

We were then spotted and the police soon got a few bodies by the coach and we were then given a place to set down. I intentionally didn't have a pint, which was just as well, as one pub was full to to the brim, one wouldn't let anyone in, saying "we only have 2 bar staff" (?), and the 3rd pub was taking 30 minutes to serve a drink, then stopped serving altogether for some reason. Everyone has a opinion about drinking before a demo, personally I don't see the harm in having a couple.

The EDL were then gathered and we were off to the meeting point for our march. I was one of the Stewards at the back and was keeping an eye out for stragglers. I quickly jumped in when some chap thought it was o.k to walk out the pub with a full pint and down the street - the police were talking to him very sternly and his pint ended up on the floor, and he wasn't a happy bunny. But the situation was quickly calmed by an arm around his shoulder and being led away from the police.

I was asked to stand near a Police line at the stage/demo entrance are (near the portaloos). As I was standing there a guy came over to me and pointed out 2 guys with cameras who he recognised just as the police let them through their line into the area? I followed them back down the hill, where one of them told the police who they were, and the message got through on the radio, and the 2 guys were then pulled out by the police and evicted from the demo. Well done!

The march started well, but for some reason the route took us right by where the UAF, with only about 5 meters separating us. The Police let us sing a few songs and generally drown them out. After 5 minutes or so the crowd then went left to continue the march. Until this point, the Police were giving stewards instructions which were being carried out as requested. But for some reason at this point there came an instruction to commence using shield, and I got hit in the back by one of these shields. The problem was we had to go left but as we were already packed in some over-zealous shield-wielding coppers had surged into the space were we were supposed to tun left, thus creating a bottle neck.

I then got another one in back. I turned around and said to the officer "I travel everyday on the underground and I know when there is no more room, and pushing us will force someone to topple over and be trampled - so pull back the guys over there to create space, so we can turn left", which they eventually did.

We got back to the demo site and the cold was going through everyone, the queues for the 5 Toilets were very long. Now I'm not being sexist here but we had many ladies on the demo (more than 20% I would estimate), and I wish they had their own designated amenity. One woman went into one and came straight out in disgust. At this point my Janitorial training kicked in, and I quickly made the toilet "Lady Safe" with the help of half a toilet roll and the bleach from the toilet flush.

The Police were absolutely fantastic (apart from Mr Shield in my back), they always sought to have a word with a steward first. I did feel like a Police collaborator, but who would you rather have whisper in your ear, someone who is a EDL-friendly or a copper that might be getting cold and bored?

Please show stewards respect and if you get the chance volunteer. It is better to have someone keeping a watchful eye over you than be confronted directly by a copper who feels like livening up a cold and boring day.

and on a sour note.... for some reason our coach driver decided to go and fill the coach up delaying all the coaches leaving Nuneaton. Some of our guys popped round the corner to get into Greggs for hot food as it was feffing freezing. One of our chaps who I thought I noticed getting back on the coach (I'm sorry I saw a beard out of the corner of my eye, wrong person) wasn't on. When someone shouted we were missing x, we literally stopped 30 yards up the road. The Police told us to leave Town immediately thus leaving him in Town. I'm sorry buddy, lessons learnt and we won't be doing it again.

well done for stewarding mate, i thought the whole event was policed and stewarded very well. Didnt get near the uaf/mdl lot to experience any possible bad points, but everyone was helpful and friendly so top marks to everyone who stewarded (and policed if there's any of you on here)

I've seen posts on fb asking for stewarding, but you can just volunteer through your division.

By God, we're ancient, aren't we mate?
You do realise that, without googling, a big chunk of this forum won't have a clue what that exchange was about.

Well done, Andy.

You didn't have as much opportunity as us marchers had to keep warm by stretching your legs to keep warm (although in my case the ol' joints are still very sore!) so what you could have done with is a char lady to keep you warmed up with hot cuppa's!

Andy is such a gent. After the a day's stewarding, and supplying beer and food on the coach on the way back, he escorted a young woman home at the end of the night. It was her first EDL demo, and he wanted to make sure she got home safely.

I don't believe he had any ulterior motive either, as he knew her husband was waiting for her at home.

So much for knuckle-draggers. I'm more of a knuckle-dragger than a gent like Andy.
