The media are making statements that they would not dare make against other organisations. Todays independent article calling the EDL "white extremists" is a perfect example. I think these media organisations are ripe to be sued for libel. One it would generate big income for the EDL and two it would stop the media doing it again. Libel is currently exempt from legal aid, however there was a case in 2004. From wikipedia:
Obviously without this it would be expensive to take a case to court (i've no idea how much it would cost). I don't know if the EDL has any support from a lawyer? At the very least I think the leadership should be keeping an evidence file of such cases of libel and defamation by the print and broadcast media as well as people like the UAF and George Galloway. If the funds ever became available or we had a lawyers support then we could open the floodgates. |

As I understand it you can only libel individuals not an organisation. For example it's not libellous to say the Tory party is crap or extremist because it is not aimed at an individual but an organisation. If it was the case that you could sue for libel when an organisation was discredited we would have the courts clogged with political groups. |

I wrote on the thread about what would members do if they won the lottery that after looking after my kids ect., I would take a lot of media to court for libel against me. A late friend of mine was a barrister and his fee was about £200 an hour!! Lets hope we can get advise from a member. Any link to this?? |

The newspaper only quoted an academic rather than said outright that the EDL was white supremacist. It would be a difficult one to prove. This professor is a complete clown and it needs another academic to rip his argument apart with another paper so he is discredited as an academic. That would hurt his ego far more than any fine.
