Journalism students ordered not to report from Preston EDL protest

A dangerous precedent was set today when the University of Central Lancashire ordered its journalism students not to cover a protest by the far-right English Defence League.

In an email to students the university cited a ridiculous request from the police ordering the public to stay away from the city centre or risk personal injury. The email is a shameful disgrace to all who stand for the furthermost principle of journalism – knowing how to assemble and verify facts. A principle more easily practiced if you are there to see all with your own eyes.

In the email, the university’s journalism division leader, the bubble-wrapped Julie Freer says:

“We recognise that this will be a major news story across the region, if not nationally. However, we have come to the conclusion that we cannot allow students to cover these events for any assignment or reporting exercise and we will not allow our equipment to be hired out. This isn’t a decision we have taken lightly. We have taken advice from the university and from industry professionals who will be covering the event

“I know that many of you will be disappointed to read this and may have planned to go along to cover such a big story in Preston. However … experienced journalists have serious concerns about covering the march and professional news organisations are taking special measures to ensure the safety of their staff. We are not in the position to be able to do this and we don’t feel this is a suitable event where trainee journalists can practice their skills.”

If by ‘experienced journalists’ Freer means the BBC or SKY News and if by ‘special measures’ she means being in a helicopter 600 feet from the ground, then I can’t blame the university for not being able to provide this.

It is a sad day when the head of a journalism faculty tells her students they should avoid going outdoors to report the news. Those who heed her words, will find themselves replaced with the dozens of citizen journalists who will do a far better job than, as it would appear, anyone looking to graduate from the University of Central Lancashire.

This is not about safety, it is about control of the story by the authorities and is simply not acceptable. I would expect this level of caution from a university in a country like, say, China or North Korea or Iran – regimes where the police have the power to dismiss journalists at the click of fingers or with the crashing down of a baton. But in England? Really?

Not all students will be abiding by Freer’s ruling. A handful with no equipment or assistance, such being denied to them by the university, will cover the protest. Nevertheless a dangerous precedent has been confirmed; the press in this country is no longer free but at the whim of the police and intimated from their duty to the public by the mindless violence of the far-right, extremist thugs of the patriot pretending EDL.

The story behind the vicious campaign of hate sweeping across England cannot be reported from 600 feet in the air, while hiding in a van, or from a roof out of sight (and often out of touch). The story is on the ground – where you can see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears the racial intolerance and criminality of the EDL and the fear and the shock on the faces of those innocents whom they target.

What a load of rubbish. What the police have actualy done has shown their faith in us by allowing us to march. If they thought for one moment that there was going to be any danger to the public they would have banned the march and there would only be a static with the EDL kettled. This sounds like a member of the far left wing abusing their authotity to cause unrest among the students to incite them to attend the demo hoping they will cause trouble by attacking the EDL

It's a shame actually because surprisingly, the university journalism students are the least biased.

I guess because they haven't made it in the profession yet and so report the story fairly as journalists are meant too. Unlike professional journalists who have already got a job and are afraid to report fairly out of fear of looking racist.

Exactly, that's why they've been banned.

I hope the journalism students do stories on this censorship for the mass media and blogs etc, so the public can see that information is being with held from them.
Winston Churchill on Islam ; ' The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world....

Amazing that she fell for all the manufactured hype. Freer the Dhimmi tool - or maybe others are right, and she is just dishonest, who knows.

Thinking about it, it could also have something to do with Health and Safety. If any of the students did get hurt, in todays world - the Uni would no doubt be held accountable for the safety of the kids, and the equipment....?? All quite ridiculous really.

I thought the whole ethos of being a journalist was to expose the truth?
Apparently this is not the case with this university.

Good on them!

yeah the only reason they have been told not to cover the protest is so that the so called "experienced" media can take evrything out of context if there are any problems at the demo and also so the protest can be completely ignored when it goes off without any problems from EDL, which is the case with todays demos, so well done to everyone that behaved ;) but now we will probably see nothing in the media about the protest because they cant slag us off

Only the NUJ officially sanctioned version of the truth unfortunately, maybe the lecturers themselves didn't want to see anything that veered from their comfy left wing view of the world also!

That's also what I suspect.

Once the psychological abuse by indoctrination has been completed they'll be given the illusion of 'free reporting'. I just hope they can differentiate between being taught the skills to do the job and political indoctrination. I live in hope.

One student publicly disobeyed the ruling (and will probably be marked for life by the NUJ). He reported pretty straight stuff on his twitter feed during the demo in Preston. Not really biased, just pretty straight stuff: good old fashioned reporting of what he saw.

Brian of London has been actively occupying a very small slice of hideously over-occupied Tel Aviv since early 2009.

Islam is a giant bungee cord tying it's adherents to the 7th century.
They can pull themselves almost to the twenty first century but eventually the cord tightens and flings them back.

There was a guy at nuneaton who i met at the train station with a camera, bumped into him later in the day on the march as well. He's making a report on the EDL straight as he saw it, he tells me it had been a good experience for him and the report was definately going to be favouring the edl because of the friendliness and good nature of the whole thing. He did tell me his name and who it was for, but being a dick, i've forgotten all of that -.-
