Neighbouring police officers back Mosque's expansion plans POLICE are backing plans to double the size of a mosque in Hull's oldest public park. The mosque at 20 Pearson Park was opened in 1992 but now worshippers say they need to expand as they need more room. They are seeking planning permission to build a two-storey extension to the side and rear, build a minaret on the roof and a rest Two petitions against the development have been signed by almost 60 people and 112 letters of objection have been submitted, and the scheme is also opposed by the Avenue and Pearson Park Residents' Association. Concerns have been raised about the effect on the conservation area, the possibility of the call to prayer being made from the minaret, and the effect of increased traffic, as the larger mosque would accommodate as many as 700 worshippers. Altogether 80 letters supporting the application have been submitted, as well as petition with 800 signatories. The mosque is next door to a police station and Humberside Police is among those to have written in support. Pc Sharon Houfe, community cohesion officer, wrote: "We have worked together with the mosque committee and the wider community on a number of occasions and... this work has undoubtedly helped towards strengthening community cohesion in the area. "We welcome the fact that the mosque is looking to grow and look forward to continuing to support them in their work with the local community." Hull Council's planning committee will consider the application on Wednesday. link http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/localnews/Neighbouring-officers-back-Mosque39s-expansion.6639491.jp |

Community cohesion... why do these community cohesion people only concentrate on one section of the community? |

Name: Youth and Community Cohesion Unit Force: Humberside Police link Team highlights: In 2008, tensions rose in one of Hull’s mosques. Physical violence broke out and hostile demonstrations occurred outside the mosque on a regular basis and over a 6 month period there was an average of six calls to the police a week. The unit of Insp Fiona Jones and PC Sharon Houfe investigated and set up forums to help members of the community resolve their problems. The unit was instrumental in calming tensions in the area and improving links with local officers, according to the force. What others say: Tim Hollis, chief constable of the force, said: ‘Over the past two years, Insp Jones and PC Houfe have been instrumental in building and maintaining strong ties with the local Muslim community. In particular, they have created a strong bond between the youth and female Muslim communities.’ http://www.janes.com/images/events/awards/policereview/2010DIV/1402823,%20Diversity,%20Youth%20&%20Comm.%20Cohesion%20Unit,%20Humberside.jpg |

They're afraid. The police, the council, they're shook. If they say yes, they appease and can smile away happily in the knowledge they've appeased. If they oppose, they might anger the muslims, angering muslims is scary. Tell any other religious identity in the world "No" and they'll accept it, tell muslims "no" and you'll end up being branded a racist fascist nationalist the list is long. Said it before, will say it again; fear is key. They're afraid. Simples. |
