Dear Sir/Madam. I wish to make a complaint about your use/abuse of the descriptive term "Asian" to generalise anyone from the continent of Asia and the sub continent of India.

It would seem that your use of the term is typically one of negativity when a particular group is in the news for reasons other than socially and culturally conducive reasons.

Many people are upset at the generalised term "Asian" when most of the population of the minorities who do come from the continent of Asia and the Indian Sub continent do not use this term.

Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese are all Asian, they can all be described under the terms of Asian and it is in my opinion quite wrong to generalise such a diverse swathe of people in this broad, sweeping inaccurate term.

It is something I feel that is in danger of creating a broad distrust of minorities in general. If one community is in the news for criminal and public order issues then they should be described specifically.
Yours Sincerely

Totaly agree, when an Englishman is in the papers for commiting and offence abroad they don't refer to him as European.

These people have been giving Indians a bad name for years, i actualy feel sorry for you.

Agree mate and the only time the wankers see us as “Asian brothers” is when their own community is under scrutiny.

Normally the bbc does not refer to the ethnicity of black and asian offenders so its good to see they did here. White and black are also used to mean a myriad of different people from europe and africa so I don't see what the problem is

Asian could mean background of a number of communities, they should use the term Pakistani or Muslim as that’s what the nonce’s are.

Great letter BSL and needs to be used and sent by as many as possible, it must be hellishly frustrating to be lumped in with the "special ones". it is wrong and cynical of the media to behave in such a way.

The problem is it imples a problem exists in/with a huge range of diverse people, instead of the specific group it actually occurs in. For example, the paedophile gangs that prey on young white girls are not "Asian," but Pakistani Muslim. To call them "Asian" is not accurate as these gangs are non-existant in the Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, etc "Asian" communities.

It's the same as if there was a Russian sex-trafficking gang and it was referred to as a "white" gang. It doesn't make sense.

The different "Asian" communities in the UK have vastly different cultures. There is no single "Asian community" and the news should be specific on the community that has the problem (or achievement) in question.

I get the point, perhaps pakistani should be mentioned. But if you start mentioning their religion then the bbc allegedly being impartial and all that might start referring to white criminals as "christian".

I understand what you'er saying. I think people want them called a Muslim gang because they think that the gang's actions stem from Islamic beliefs, e.g. seeing non-Muslims as below them, and seeing non-Muslim women as pieces of meat to be used.

Whether or not their actions stem from Islamic beliefs I don't know. But either way it's wrong to call them an Asian gang due to the points I said in the previous point.

Agreed. Maybe the suspects name should have been better publicized as they were predominantly Muslim names. Not all Muslims behave or treat people like this. These animals should be caged for life!

I dont agree with this to be honest.
Im a white English man, lots of things are reported to have been done by a white this, or a white that.
That describes halt of the planet, and Im certainly not Russian, or French, or what ever, Im sorry but it seems to me like more PC bashing.

A more logical description would be "middle easterns", "Western Asians" or "Arabs".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Asia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_people

It would be more logical from a pragmatic point of view also, for instance, when the police is asking about a suspect, because Europeans can usually tell apart East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Korean,..) from Arabs by their looks.

Their use of the word "Asian", therefore, is probably a way to avoid Muslim protests, because most Muslims are Arabs and vice versa.

Unfortunately, this change would be of little use for Sikhs, who look similar to Arabs from an European perspective, except for their turbans.

So, it should be argued that, apart from practical considerations about fugitive suspects, the public has a right to know other details about criminals, so that they can make their own conclusions about the relative dangers of different religions and lifestyles (such as alcoholism or drug addiction) and then speak and debate openly about how to address those problems.

Truth nails it above.

If the actions stem from Islam, they should be called Muslims.

But we're a long way from the BBC making that huge leap of understanding.
Brian of London has been actively occupying a very small slice of hideously over-occupied Tel Aviv since early 2009.

Islam is a giant bungee cord tying it's adherents to the 7th century.
They can pull themselves almost to the twenty first century but eventually the cord tightens and flings them back.

The problems with linking this crime to Islam are:
1) The term Asian seems to generally indicate a broad geographical location
2) The term Muslim points to a 'religion' with people from all ethnicities, including Asian, white British/European/American Chinese Etc.
3) I find there is no reference to religion from the trial, or from the Police press releases Etc.

Don't misunderstand me, It is blindingly obvious what faith these scum follow, some subjective evidence for this:
1) Their names.
2) They don't think they did anything wrong (against sharia)
3) The way they dress (see pictures in media)

I think there have been 3/4 strikingly similar cases in as many months, and all would indicate Muslims and their twisted/sick view of the world. and how to treat non Muslims (especially young girls)

In my opinion The authorities need to set up some sort of investigation into this disgusting behaviour, to find out linking factors. but they wont, because it'll offend a certain group of people (Even if they do investigate, it'll never be attributed to Islam)

My further opinion would support passing the death sentence on these vile creatures, regardless of religion (at least they wouldn't do it again)

Finally - British Sikh lad, Hi mate, when i first read this story, the last groups of people who sprang to my mind as perpetrators were Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists, and whilst i sympathize and agree with what you say, I don't think it's a battle you can win - but good luck. :)

I saw the BBC TV News & heard the BBC Radio news and not once did I hear them describe the perpetrators as Asian or anything else. That annoyed me because when they say Asian they mean Moslem.

British moslims to be precise ... but then can we see the evidence that they are holding British passports .....

now i am a fan of this campaign because i do not think that the rest of asian should be tarnished in the same brush. If we use the descriptive oriental ... or Indian, or arab .... everyone in here knows what these actually mean ... and in the event of a crime being investigated, these descriptive would go along way in helping people to identify perpetrators....

Another thing, someone here did make th point about the names .... these were moslim names, now they were all of indian/pakistaini origin except one .... one then ask the question .. why ....

i would take a good guess at this, this odd one out, seems to be a pedophile at best, and is using the 'gang' as a means to getting his kicks from having sex with under aged girls ...... and i go further to say, it wouldn't surprise me if he was the link between the 'pimps' and the 'market' for pedophiles

Asia's a big place, 8.4% of the worlds surface area and 48 separate countries as well as over 100 differing nationalities in it. However Asian is part of the BBC's and the MSM's agenda to never mention the "M" word in a negative context unless there is no other option. Hence they'd rather tar all Asians with a broad brush rather than get down to specifics. Problem being of course that those convicted may very well have been born here and are "British" though again not all Brits indulge in this disgusting activity, just certain members of the "M" group and we can't have them named and shamed after all can we? After all people might just take a close hard look at the Religion of Peace and decide that it has no place in British society (Irony alert)
