Popular mosque plans to expand at the double Plans have been submitted to double the size of a popular town centre mosque. Leaders at the Jalalia Jaame Mosque in Nile Street have applied for planning permission to build a first floor extension to the building. In a planning application submitted to the council Syed Uddin said: "The proposed first and second floor extension and other alterations have been designed to cause minimum effect to the surrounding area and the local architecture taking into consideration local and existing materials which it has to match in the way of aesthetic appearance, colour and texture." The extension will allow for more spacious corridors and staircases within the mosque and also improve facilities for after school homework classes and religious tuition. The extra space will allow for additional classes for female members of the community. Mr Uddin also insists the expansion of the mosque will not affect traffic in the area. He added: "There will be no extra burden on the traffic or parking since the majority of users are located in the neighbouring streets and will walk to access the facilities as they are currently doing. "The mosque has spaces for up to nine cars to the rear with further parking on the kerbside with limited restrictions. "The majority of patrons are from the neighbouring streets and are in walking distance." Central ward councillor Farooq Ahmed believes the expansion at the mosque is needed and fully supports the proposal. He said: "It is a community mosque run by a committee of local people. "It is more of an education site and is very important that we have places like this as it helps with the people not becoming interested in fundamentalist views. "I am supporting it because I think it is a good thing and there is lack of room there at the moment." link http://menmedia.co.uk/asiannews/news/s/1370960_popular_mosque_plans_to_expand_at_the_double |
