http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-11708637 A shop assistant from Southampton says she was told to remove her poppy as it "was not part of the store uniform". Harriet Phipps, 18, who works at Hollister clothes shop in the West Quay centre, said the store's assistant manager had told her to do it. Miss Phipps initially refused to take it off, but was made to feel so "uncomfortable" she eventually did. Hollister, which is owned by American clothing giant Abercrombie and Fitch, said it was looking into the matter. Miss Phipps said she wore her poppy in honour of a friend currently serving in Afghanistan. Fought for country "It did make me very upset. I was so angry, I didn't expect it at all," she told the BBC. "I kept it on and then I did get told again to take it off and I felt really pressured and quite intimidated so I did take it off because I thought I had to. "He [the supervisor] just said it wasn't part of the uniform and that it's not company policy. "But I don't suppose it is part of any company's uniform when it comes to the 11th of November. "It's [showing] respect for people who've fought for our country. "It's taking it back to values of why we're all here. It doesn't have to be for World War I or World War II, it's people fighting today as well." It is not the first time Abercrombie and Fitch has been involved in a disagreement with staff over its uniform policy. In August 2009, following a tribunal, a disabled woman was awarded £8,000 for unlawful harassment after she was made to work in the stockroom of the company's Savile Row store in central London after wearing a cardigan to cover her prosthetic arm. |

Is this the company, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hollister-Southampton/307538842968 if so keep your entries civil but let them know how you feel and perhaps the threat of a flsh demo, may do the trick. NS Edited by UK-Jack, Nov 8 2010, 03:45 PM.

This just shows how theres been a seachange in norms and values since Labour came to power in the 90's. We have been so 'dumbed down' and attuned to political correctness, that even wearing a poppy, a campaign which has been run by the British Legion for donkeys years, is in this day and age, seen as offensive to some minority groups. I remember the reverse. I remember when I first started work you were frowned upon for NOT wearing a poppy. Loads of shops had them. The supermarket next door, the cake shop, the chemist had them on the counter etc. Conversely last year I struggled to get one and the same this year. I nipped into a corner shop on Sunday for a few bits and asked if they had poppies and he said no (it may have been because he was a muslim). Anyway, I got one in the (greek) chip shop who had them on the counter but this whole incident with the shop girl just shows how society sees the poppy as a political hot potato these days ![]() |

Our Canadian brothers and sisters, who's brave military have stood beside us throughout many wars, realise the newsworthyness of this disgraceful action... and have just (within 20 mins of me writing) reported in the Toronto Star that, fearing a backlash, the pathetic management have reversed their decision. A result, I would say. But it would be a pity for these weasels to slide away from the full public disgust they deserve. i thought we'd got past all of this overly p.c. crap but i seems that there are still alot of people using times like this to show their management how clever & considerate they are. Maybe it would help if any businesses not supporting remembrance day were outed in the media - show them for what they are and screw their trade. |
