ISLAMIC fanatics protesting against the war in Afghanistan are to be banned from yelling abuse at returning heroes.

And they could even be jailed for hate-filled rants under a new “respect” law.

Ministers are determined to avoid any repeat of last year’s shock scenes in Luton when a mob branded the Royal Anglian Regiment murderers at a march-past.

The law will also target pubs and shops that refuse to serve troops in uniform or carrying military ID, an issue The People successfully campaigned on.

Defence minister Lord Astor said last night: “There is no place for those who refuse to provide goods and services to military personnel.”

Ministers are working on a wide-ranging “covenant” setting out what soldiers can expect in return for risking their lives including priority NHS treatment and school places for their children.

Well done government, nice to see you're not ignoring these scumbags.

I havent been to a demo yet but well done to those that went to home comings, supported and demo'd to get these scumbag fanatics off our streets.

1-0 to the EDL 1-0
and from this day forward, as we have right from the start, come wind and rain, we won't complain, we'll continue to march. We'll be there in our numbers, We'll make our voices heard, to defend our land from hate preachers, counter there every word. demo days and meet and greets, serious but fun, and at the end of everything, with victory over scum, you'll here us cheers, OI get us a beer, our hard work here is done.

:) Good news

About time the government actively supported our armed forces in the face of the public.
THEY JOINED FOR MANY REASONS, TO MARCH, TO SAIL, TO FLY. THEY WENT WHERE THEY WERE POSTED, BUT NOBODY JOINS TO DIE. THEIR LEADERS TALK ON TV, WHAT ELSE COULD WE HAVE DONE? BUT THOSE LEADERS LOST NO DAUGHTERS, AND NONE HAS LOST A SON. SO HERE'S TO ALL OUR SOLDIERS WHEREVER THEY MAY BE...AND HERES TO ALL THEIR FAMILIES, I RAISE A GLASS TO THEE...WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE.

Yeah. Fair point. I suppose I'd put myself in the 'guardedly optimistic' camp, on this one.

We should worry about the law of unintended consequences, sooner or later this law about showing respect will end up being used in a way it was probably never meant to be used such as banning EDL marches for showing "lack of respect" to the local Muslim population.
You should always worry when the government takes it upon themselves to add additional laws into society, when a perfectly adequate law of breaching the peace already exists.

I believe it only relates to those that serve in the forces, no more. This leaves us free to up the ante against Sharia.

Agreed 100%.

The news article refers to 'the spoken word' only so I'd to see the final details to see if they include banners etc. because 'respect' may be open to interpretation by you-know-who.

No doubt the perps of these acts will find a way around the law by lining the the length of the route then quietly turning their backs on the troops or some such nonesense - I hope 'respect' will cover actions such as this.

Yup, a bit like health and safety at work which was originally intended to protect workers but is now generally used as a get out clause for employers when something happens.

Sorry you hurt your back lifting that box, but we did send you a memo that told you how lift things in the correct manner.

This is something Leon has been campaigning for and it looks as tho we have an EDL success, the military covenant, or some of it is to be enshrined in law.
We should be toasting this guys.

Its a good idea - it will be purely related to the military so I cant see it being used in any other way. However until they start to target the source its not going to stop anything. Islam4Uk etc will still protest just not directly against our troops. They are very adept at making sure they dont break any laws. Banning them doesnt do anything either as they just reform under a new name.

The government must attack them at source - close down their website, remove their benefits, encourage the police to arrest whenever possible no matter how small the offence. Squeeze them out of existence.

Its ok having a law, but that law has to be enforced. It will be another man made law that the "special ones" flout. The OB wont dare arrest anyone breaking this law in case they upset someone

It is a start and if the police dont enforce it we complain. Hundreds of complaints = a great deal of paperwork
