Police are being given more powerful guns and extra training to prepare for a possible Mumbai-style terror attack in the UK, it has been reported. Security chiefs are staging a series of counter-terrorism exercises with police sharpshooters training alongside units of the elite SAS under the plans, the BBC said. The development follows the interception last month by British intelligence officials of a credible al Qaida-linked plot. That would have reportedly been similar to the deadly commando-style raids in Mumbai, India, two years ago, which left 166 people dead and several hundred injured. Cities in France and Germany were also targeted as part of the plot. Former security minister Lord West told the BBC police officers needed to be properly trained to deal with similar terror attacks. He said: "These people like the Mumbai terrorists, are a bit like soldiers, they do fire and support, move forward, all they want to do is kill as many people as possible, with slightly heavier weapons than our police have. "And therefore you have to give heavy weapons to the police and train them how to do it. "There is no way, except at immense cost, you could have SAS-level trained troops in every part of the country to be able to respond in the timescale you'd need. The police are there and have to do that first response." The UK's terror threat rating remains at "severe", the second highest rating, where it has been since increasing from "substantial" in January. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5gn2DTCWONDdGaWU0xVO-D4al6iEA?docId=N0092661288060839479A |

Police Firearms units are generally speaking, highly trained and a talented bunch. I have heard it said that they have to be more accurate than SAS because there is less recompense on SAS if there happens to be colateral damage. Make of this as you will. |

they will look daft running into a mosque hiding guns and bombs when they have to call first so they dont upset the imam, and when they do get there they will have to wait for a guide and then take off their shoes and socks, yep highly trained tactical anti terror squad stopped at the door and told to respect islam or else.... doesnt quite fill me with confidence, and if they are let loose on the streets there will be people shot left and right for carrying pool ques and table legs (both done for real) ...... no confidence in the police they are a political boot boy tool used to keep us the public in line. |
