Iran amputates thief's hand as warning to others Read more: http://www.news.com.au/world/iran-amputates-thiefs-hand-as-warning-to-others/story-e6frfkzi-1225943442462#ixzz13Pcdol7x AUTHORITIES in Iran have amputated the hand of a thief in front of other prisoners in the latest of a growing number of brutal punishments in its prisons. State radio reported on Sunday that a 32-year-old man who had been convicted of four robberies had his hand cut off in the central city of Yazd. Other inmates were assembled to witness the punishment as a warning. Although cutting off a hand for theft is permitted under the strict interpretation of Islamic law practiced in Iran, the penalty is rare and opposed by many judges and clerics. However, the amputation is the third reported this month, suggesting that the punishment is gaining in popularity among the hard line judiciary. Last week, a judge in Tehran sentenced a 21-year-old man to amputation for stealing from a candy shop. It is not clear if the sentence has yet been carried out. Related Coverage The man was also sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to return the stolen items. Another convicted thief had his hand cut off earlier this month in the northeastern city of Mashhad. State-run news agencies reported comments by Mahmoud Zoghi, the public prosecutor in Mashhad, indicating that amputations would be more widely applied, reflecting a “more rigorous approach” to punishment. The US-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported an increase in harsh sentences being passed by judges in recent months, including amputation, stoning and floggings. The country’s human rights record is under renewed scrutiny after the outcry at the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. “These inhumane and barbaric acts are nothing but torture under international law and should be abolished,” said Hadi Ghaemi, an executive director for the campaign. “There is nothing about Iranian culture that sanctions such cruelty, and it is time for the U.N. to establish a monitoring mechanism to hold Iran accountable for grossly violating its international obligations.” |

Would special ones be as keen on sharia in UK if amputating the 'appendages' of special one sex offenders was a prerequisite of deportation? |
