Halal Meat - How to get it Labelled; money talks

I know there have been a few threads concerning Halal meat, but I thought I'd start this one off because instead of just moaning about it, I have an idea for a solution.

I've heard rumours that in June this year, the EU has discussed labelling meat to show whether it is Halal, Kosher or not. Even if the labelling does become a legal requirement, the larger distributors will have 3 years to comply and the smaller distributors 5 years. This isn't good enough, and so I put forward the following:

The people with the power in the marketplace is the buyer. Ultimately, we are the end consumer, and so we need to put pressure on the next link in the chain.

It doesn't need to be a requirement of the law!

If groups such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys told their suppliers that the meat had to be labelled, they would do it for fear of losing a large order from a national distributor that no doubt sustains their business. It's up to us to put the pressure on the national supermarkets.

There has been many protests concerning Halal & Kosher meat being sold to the unsuspecting consumer, mainly because of either the animal welfare aspects or the religious aspects. Some people think that it's only fair the animals are stunned first, and other religious groups do not agree with meat having been blessed / dedicated to Allah. I personally agree with both reasons for the complaint. I also think there is no good reason why the meat shouldn't be labelled so that we have a choice in what we buy.

I was surprised to find out that the biggest group to protest the labelling of meat is the Muslim and Jewish communities themselves. Wouldn't they like to be sure that the meat they buy has been killed in accordance with their religious beliefs? I've also heard that 90% of Halal meat is consumed by unsuspecting non-Muslims, which explains why they are protesting. Once the meat is labelled, less Halal meat will be sold, and who do you think owns these suppliers? Time to hit them where it hurts, the pocket!

Many are already making the stand and not buying from the outlets that supply halal without labeling it.

Everyone shop at Morrisons and ring your local Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys, tell them you were a regular customer but because you have heard that all their meat is halal, you will now be taking your custom elsewhere.

The best way to stop them selling it, is to boycott the shop altogether, not just for the meat but for everything.

Sound advive, Ali.

I don't like Tesco one little bit but I went into my local a while back, selected meat produucts and placed them at the checkout. As the checkout assistant began to scan the items I asked the obvious: "Are your meat products halal"? Poor girl had no idea and even her supervisor couldn't help.

I was making my own little stand at a point whereby it would gain the maximum attention from other shoppers and it worked. Needless to say (and because I had no intention of buying the meat anyway, I was just bored!) all the items were left at the checkout to fester. Yes, I did feel a little 'smug satisfaction'!

Yup. Does anyone remember when Asda were selling bread for 14 pence a loaf, which was less than it was costing them to make?

They did this to bring in custom, knowing they'd make more money on the other products that people buy. If people take their whole weeks shopping elsewhere over this issue, it's seriously going to hit them in their profit margin.

LOL Fair play Christine :D

Dudge, that's what everyone needs to do, it's no good everyone sayong they're going to boycott the other supermarkets and then still nip in there to get their shopping because it's convenient. People need to make a proper stand against this, they need to realsie it's not a game, this is our futire.

Very true. A boycott should be a complete boycott, not just their meat products but also everything else, so that we really hit them in the pocket and prove that we mean business even if it does cost us a bit more to shop elsewhere.

It's all very well to get up on the high horse and shout about this sort of thing, but I also understand that for some people it's simply not financially viable. I've unfortunately had to get used to Asda's cheapo brands because my situation at times has demanded it. Morrisons seem to be the only safe option at the moment, but the closest one to me is miles away. A bit of a problem when you can't afford the transport, but my point is that anyone who feels strongly about this should make the effort and do what they can.

I left the following message on the ADSA contact form on their website, lets see the reply :D

Website: http://your.asda.com/section-contact-asda

Hi,

I spend between £150 to £200 per month at my local ADSA store. I am not happy that your meat products do not state whether they are Kosher, Halal or otherwise. I have advised members of my friends and family that ADSA supply Halal and Kosher in their stores without labelling stating what it is.

I have therefore decided to shop at Morrisons from now on as I know they do not have Halal or Kosher meat in store.

Once ASDA start labelling their meat products properly I will reconsider my decision to purchase my shopping from ASDA again.

Thank you
Phil.

Very nice letter Phil, but I must point out that Morrisons DO stock Halal meat, but all of theirs IS labelled as such. At least, this is what I believe from information on this forum and other news sites, haven't had a chance to visit them myself.

Morrisons are giving us the choice, which is all we're asking for, so I hope it isn't long before Asda and all the rest follow suit :)

One might add a notion of the human rights issue too.. ;)

Quote:

This is not only a question of animal welfare but also a serious human rights issue. Article 9 of the Human Rights Act 1998 makes provision for the protection not only of religious practice but also the right not to participate in religion or it's ceremonies.

As all halal and kosher meat has been produced as part of a religious ritual purchasers are not only by default participating in this ritual but also funding the religions who carry these out. If the public aren't being told what they're buying their being forced into this without their consent.

Any supermarket which sells halal meat should be boycotted by all edl members.Maybe even hand out leaflets/flyers to shoppers at supermarkets Which sell halal that way we can alert shoppers that halal meat is being sold in their local supermarket. It's only a sugestion though but it might be a way to get our message across to the public.Halal meat should be banned full stop if they don't like it they can leave.

The human rights issue is one well worth exploiting seeing as it's been one of the main weapons in the arsenal of Islam. Didn't know about that, good point :)
