Managing perceptions; (YouTube or U-tube?)

I've been browsing the EDL Facebook page where I came across this fine fellow:

'A message to MDL'

I've no wish to malign the poor chap, but is this really the image EDL wants to present to the world? While I'm all for spontaneity and raw enthusiasm, and would never advocate a culture of 'spin', can anything be done to manage these things a little more .... errm ... betterer?

We all have to start somewhere.

At least he's having a go.

Err... I'm sure the next attempt will be a lot better.

How do you know he's EDL? Think about it. ;)

You just did and you did again.

Christine:

Thanks for your response, but whether he is or not, his posting is on the EDL FB page and therefore it's reasonable (although possibly incorrect) to assume it's approved.

1Pat:

Thanks also and yes, you're right. I was being ironic. I think such posts are damaging and, as someone who is attracted to the EDL for its stated values, I find them off-putting and not something I'd want to associate myself with.

However distasteful you might find this guy’s behaviour to be, you must understand this is a street based movement and membership cuts across many social domains. It is arguably for this reason that PR is a major problem and for example, your reluctance to be associated.

We really aren’t a gang of morons, Remus.

Nnnnnggg ... sorry 1Pat: this is one of the problems with Forum communications. I'm not saying the EDL are a bunch of morons and I very much understand the sentiments and frustrations that lad is expressing. Such frustrations are useful for any cause, as they bring energy. However, energy needs to be managed and targeted lest we have anarchy.

The point I was trying to make is that if the EDL wants to appeal to ordinary people who are disturbed by the rise of Islamism in the UK, then it can't allow itself to be perceived as a cheap copy of the IRA.

While I do think that lad made himself look an idiot and I hope he takes his video down, my main point is about managing perceptions of the League as a whole.

I fully understand your point and, no doubt, many may share this viewpoint.

It's up to YOU, it's up to ME and it's up to US to challenge this view to portray the EDL in the most positive light possible. I realise you've identified an obstacle but this is why we need to work harder to counter this.

I'm 57 and use a walking stick (and I like my cardigans!) but this didn't stop me going on a demo because I didn't fit into a preconceived misconception of 'a typical EDL type'. Three times the police tried to separate me from the EDL demonstrators prior to the main event because they though I'd obviousy escaped from 'The Retirement Home For The Lost And Bewildered', they were surprised such a diminutive figure was part of the demo. See? Misconceptions!

Post demo, amidst media biased reporting, I've been proud to tell my friends of how good the demo was, what a great crowd the lads were and what a wonderful cause the EDL is.

We all have a part to play in the management of perceptions of the EDL and I do my (little) bit with pride. If you are a true patriot to our country and believe in the EDL cause, is there anything you can do to improve our image? We all have a role somewhere.

It boils down to a numpty (IMO) wearing a balaclava, sat in front of an England flag in a dimly lit room bumping his gums about 'we, the EDL, are gonna do this or that', 'won't stand for this, that, or the other' etc. in 'a less than professional manner' to say the least! It just looked patethic.
