Isn't it about time we made our Saints day a public holiday? Don't know if we could start a petition or something along those lines, but we need to try and instill some pride back into our country! Wasn't sure whether to put this on here or on the off topic thread. |

Yes it should be a public holiday and I think we should hold a rally in Trafalger Sq. on the 23rd April next year to get signatures in support and then march on Downing Street to present our petition |

St Patricks day is a public holiday, isn't it? So why isn't St George's Day a public holiday too? |

making it a public holiday would be a great idea. but it would need to be an extra public holiday as opposed to them shifting round existing public holidays. |

As long as it is treated with due respect and reverence and not an excuse to get pissed up and fight and spew up all over the Queens highway as Paddies Day tends to be.

It should be a holiday - the reason often cited by government why it is not is because with Easter and two Bank Holidays in May we already have too many days off over that period. The simple solution would be to cancel the May Day Bank Holiday and move it to April 23rd instead. Also would you have the actual day as a holiday or have it on the nearest Monday? |

Absolutely!!! This country has more events for St Patrick's Day than it does for St Georges Day and it needs to change. The Irish, Scottish and Welsh are allowed to say they are PROUD to be Irish, Scottish or Welsh and the English are made to feel uncomfortable or even racist for being loud and proud to be English. |

Haven't people tried to get St Georges Day recognised before? It feels like that....However signed the petition. But the Gov wouldn't give us any more reasons to celebrate; we have the lowest holidays of any other EU country. Now they have just increased the retirement age!!! (The French would have had them for breakfast over this alone) I can't see them giving this one out, but as ever live in hope. The average leave and public holiday entitlements across all EU states is 34 days. The UK and Netherlands provide just 28 days off while Ireland gives 29. At the other extreme, Greece, Austria, and Finland provide the most time off - 37, 38 and 39 days respectively. The figures are based on statutory entitlements for an employee working five days a week, with 10 years' service They like picking and choosing from the EU menu, the same way they do with their wine at dinner all free from the electorate. Sorry for the rant Peace Ste |

Agree that it should be public holiday but there was a huge facebook campaign last year and an online petition to downing street and the official reply from the then PM was a resounding 'NO'

I have had a idea how about we just all class it as a holiday and go to the park for a kick about with the kids. If the boss or school kick off just say its st georges day and you are on your hols. If we all do it and get a few mate to do it too the what can they do to us. |

The ones who only put up their flags and talk about their country in the world cup are also the same ones who sit on their couch with a halal meal from their local takeaway and a can of beer watching some crappy talent show or a dumbed-down soap.If the mp's and ministers are proud English men and women why don't they make our saint georges day a bank holiday. When it's saint patricks day there is tons of coverage from the press yet when it's saint georges day there is no mention of it. |

St Georges day ( The day before and after ) are the only days i fly my flag outside my house, 3 years back i got told by the police to take it down because it offended the "Locals" so the next year i flew a giant one and told the police to get a warrant of go away. |

It's a day of celebration of the English patron saint. And regarding what you said about drunks, why should ordinary English people suffer because some people get drunk? Didn't think I'd hear someone on this forum talk about St George's Day the way you have. |

Why should the country celebrate a Turk Roman centurion that was beheaded in the 4th century for not renouncing his faith |

St George is the patron saint of England, remember that. St George's day is one of the few times that the English can be proud of, and celebrate, being English. It is one of the few times the English can do that without the accusations of being racist. Pride of being English has been washed and eroded away by political correctness. St George's Day is about being English and the pride of it. In a country where patriotism and pride has suffered and has been oppressed, making St George's Day a public holiday would be the right thing to do. |
