Muslim headscarf issue settled at Disneyland

A Muslim woman who said Disneyland wouldn't let her wear a religious headscarf on her job as a vacation planner or ticket seller - the second such complaint in recent weeks - has reached an agreement with the Southern California theme park and is now wearing a Disney-provided blue scarf and beret-style hat to work.

The 22-year-old Chicago woman, Noor Abdallah, was hired this summer as an intern after a phone interview. But when she arrived for her orientation in mid-August, Disney representatives asked why she had not mentioned her headscarf, says Munira Syeda, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Abdallah was told she would need to take a position with less guest interaction because a customized uniform could not be made before the end of her five-month vacation planning internship, says Abdallah's attorney, Ameena Qazi. But the council intervened, Qazi added, and within a week she was back on the job wearing the Disney scarf and cap.

Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown disagreed, saying "we were working to accommodate her request, and had provided her an option similar to what she is currently wearing before CAIR got involved. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has a long history of accommodating a variety of religious requests from cast members of all faiths with more than 200 accommodations made over the last three years, and this instance was no different."

Earlier last month, another Muslim Disney employee who refused to accept a costume headpiece and several alternative jobs filed a federal discrimination complaint; that case is still pending and the woman, a hostess at the Storyteller's Café, has not returned to work.

"We live in an increasingly diverse world, and Disney needs to be able to recognize that diversity as well as accommodate it among its employees," says CAIR's Syeda. "Moving forward, this is a good first step, and we hope Disney will actually look into implementing a policy for Muslim women employees whose religious practice requires them to wear Islamic headscarf."

"... when she arrived for her orientation in mid-August, Disney representatives asked why she had not mentioned her headscarf, ..."

An increasingly common practice. Being two-faced and deceptive gives them the opportunity to call the '***ist' card of one type or other. Nah, if she didn't wear it at the interview she shouldn't be allowed to wear it at work. All employers should require interviewees to attend interviews in the dress code they'd be working in (with provisos).

This anyones me... If an item of religious clothing/belief is stopping you from doing your job then you are not fit to do the job. Just like the Muslim cashiers who work in my local Tesco and refuse to handle pork or booze. I go to there isle on purpose with both :D

When I was looking to go in to the Army a Sikh chopper pilot had no problem putting on his flight helmet for his turban. Why, because it was part of the job.

If there is a strict uniform then EVERYONE must follow to it.

You must be kidding me, I've never heard of this.

How ridiculous.

Thinking more about that, I'd throw a fcuking paddy if that happened to me. Let's hope for their sake it doesn't.

Once again a muslim organisation in a western country values religious freedom, tolerance, the right to wear what you like and "rich tapestry of diversity". However the same bunch of muslims will argue til they are blue in the face that Muslim countries should NOT have to offer the same to non muslims.

HYPOCRITES.

They should implement a policy of all employees having to wear a "Porky the Pig" outfit, on a rotation basis. Starting with her. She's taking the piss.

Maybe they could just change her job role to one of the characters in the parade, that way she will be covered from head to toe. Surely it would be the perfect job for her!

And if they are unsure of which character she should be I am happy to offer this photo as advice:

This all sounds a bit 'Mickey Mouse' if you ask me.

Like investigators are investigating 'crash for cash' accidents I think they should compile a list of spurious lawsuits that have been brought by muslims after a very short time in a job as it does seem that there are a number of them who deliberately set out to put themselves in positions where they can immediately shout racism, islamophobia or discrimination.

Are these cases genuine? Yes, genuine in that the supposed victims set out with the sole intention of infiltrating an institution, such as Disney Land, taking them to the cleaners and then forcing the company to implement policies in order to avoid this happening again. Policies which favour muslims of course.

These aren't employee's with a genuine grievance, these are Jihadi's who are out to make a few quid for themselves while they further the cause of islam. Employers worldwide need to wake up to this.

The point here is, she was not wearing her head scarf when she went to interview, but then chooses to wear it once she was in the job.

I think she knew full well, that Disney have strict dress codes for its employees and she was trying to force them in such a position that would ultimately resulted in her sueing them for soem discrimination of sorts.

Disney have actually made a smart move, by designing a headscarf/beret they have still enforced their uniform policy on the woman and removed the 'islam' identification of head scarf, well done Disney !!

On a personal note, anyone that does not declare their religious beliefs, or 'the requirements' of their faith at an interview could in fact be sacked when doing as this lady has done, for not being open and honest at the very start of the relationship with her future employer. She deceived them at the interview, and one would question whether given the opportunity to deceive them again would she ? I would not trust someone in my organization on these grounds alone ....

Muslims refusing to integrate happens all the time. Check out this blood pressure raiser from may 2009.

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23688940-muslim-chef-sues-insensitive-met-over-pork-sausages.do

Target in the US have also had big issues with Muslims refusing to handle pork and alcohol. So its not confined to the UK ;)

As Bodiceca says, the girl here is clearly in the wrong. Its a shame Disney caved in to this.
