AL QAEDA PLOT TO KIDNAP COMMONWEALTH GAMES STARS A PLOT to kill Commonwealth Games competitors and kidnap fans emerged yesterday as Scotland’s athletes flew out to the chaos that surrounds the showpiece event in India. Security sources have warned of “specific intelligence” about an Al Qaeda-linked group’s threat to take foreign hostages in a terror spectacular in front of a worldwide audience. Australia’s Federal Government yesterday issued direct guidance to fans not to wear any nationalistic colours, while it has emerged that athletes representing the home nations are set to be given special protection at every venue. The threat of terrorism has perpetually hung over the Games in Delhi, which open next weekend, but fears are growing for the safety and security of competitors, officials and supporters following the new intelligence. Reports emerging from Australia last night suggested a number of the nations taking part have major concerns about the latest threat, but have refused to upgrade travel warning advice for fear of angering the Indian Government. Australian Government officials added the locations of the Indian Parliament and the World Heritage-listed Red Fort complex to the no-go zone for their citizens. One source said: “It is a serious situation. There is specific intelligence about an attempted hostage snatch. “The Australian Government should be up front about this. People travelling to India, and particularly Delhi, need to be aware of the real risks.” Roger Henning, a spokesman for security consultants Homeland Security Asia-Pacific, said: “People should not wear an Aussie T-shirt, drape themselves in the Aussie flag, or draw attention to themselves in any other clothing which is identifiable as Australian.” link http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/201838/Al-Qaeda-plot-to-kidnap-Commonwealth-Games-stars |

These games are going to be a shower of sh1t, and if it comes under attack from Al Qaeda I think it will be the end of the commonwealth games. |

It has to be down to the individual if they go or not. Personaly if you are single with no responsabilities compete if you want to, but if you have family stay away it is not worth the risk and if anyone wants to condem you give them the finger |

If that happens can we use it as an excuse to abandon the Olympics? Although they have done a lot of damage to east London already. |

No we can't abandon the Olympics, what are all those poor eastern europeans going top do for work? The amount of overseas labour on those building sites are shocking, so much for 'providing employment to local people' |

i have to say, as much as India will try and protect the competitors from attacks, i actually think that something will happen at these games .... i.e. a suicide bomber or hostage situation , or even a repeat of mumbi (however its spelt) I hope my feelings are wrong and nothing does happen ...... |

I found an updated link to the Express. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/201806/Terrorists-plan-to-kill-British-athletes "No we can't abandon the Olympics, what are all those poor eastern europeans going top do for work? The amount of overseas labour on those building sites are shocking, so much for 'providing employment to local people' " I met someone last month whose son has got six weeks work on the Olympic site. That's the first person from my wide circle of acquaintance I have heard of getting any work there in the 4 years they have been tearing up Hackney Marshes and Temple Mills. |

It would be the Talibans and Pakistans dream to do a "spectacular" against India while the world (well commonwealth) is looking. It wouldn't surprise me. But to stop it due to terrorist threats would be giving up. |
