Soldier who served in Afghanistan refused council house 'for not being local while he was overseas By DAILY MAIL REPORTER A father-of-two who served in Afghanistan has been denied a council house because he has not been living in his local area while serving in the forces. Lance Corporal Craig Baker, 26, completed two tours of duty in the war-stricken region before he decided to leave the Army to spend more time with his sons. But the former soldier, who grew up in Bracknell, Berkshire, has been denied a council property for his family because he 'does not have a local connection'. Lance Corporal Craig Baker pictured in Afghanistan in 2006. The former soldier has been denied a council house because he has not been living in his local area while serving in the forces The former soldier decided to leave the Army to spend more time with his family L/ Corp. Baker claims he and his young family - wife Anna, 25, and their two boys, aged five and two - have been let down by Bracknell Forest Council. And he accused the local authority of discriminating against him because of his service background. Unable to find a property, the ex-serviceman has also been unable to find work. He was forced to sign up for the Jobseekers' Allowance The former soldier said: 'Bracknell Forest Council has let us down from the start. We don't want any special treatment, we just want fair treatment and are not getting it. 'We have tried to help ourselves and all we ask is for a little bit of help but they have turned their back on us. 'We have been fobbed off by the Bracknell housing options team. I believe this is partly due to incompetence and partly due to discrimination because I am an ex-soldier. 'I grew up in the area, my parents live in the area and my wife Anna is from the area. But because I've lived in different military areas for short periods I am not local to anywhere. 'It's me, my wife and two children sleeping on an airbed in my parents' home. Life after leaving the Army is far from ideal. 'I left the Army to spend time with my two boys. I am hoping to become a truck driver.' Mr Baker grew up in the Berkshire town and was educated at Easthampstead Park Community School. His wife Anna went to Brakenhale School in the town. But the pair moved into Army accommodation at Wattisham Airfield, Ipswich, Suffolk, in November 2007. AFGHAN FAMILY HAS £1.2MILLION HOME In stark contrast, less than 30 miles away, an Afghan family has been given an imposing seven bedroomed £1.2 million property by their local authority. The benefits system was no problem for mother-of-seven Toorpaki Saiedi who was revealed in 2008 to be living in a home that cost £150,000 pounds per year to rent. The family, who lived in Acton, west London, and received £170,000 pounds per year in state handouts, had a 50-inch plasma screen television, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and plush silk furnishings. Yet they moaned that they were too poor to afford Sky television. Son Jawad, who has an iPhone, said: 'When the council chose to put us here we did not say no. If someone gave you a lottery jackpot would you leave it? 'When I heard how much the council was paying I thought they were mad.' Now unable to find accommodation, the ex-serviceman has also been unable to find work. He was forced to sign up for the Jobseekers' Allowance. He has also been denied council support for a rental guarantee scheme which could have enabled him to move into a private property. The former soldier would otherwise need someone earning at least £40,000 pounds per year to confirm the rent would be paid - a contact which he does not have. Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee said he has launched an investigation into the case. 'I am happy to take up a case like this with the council, where someone has given service to this country,' he said. Before he left the forces, Mr Baker, who also served in the Falklands, was a member of the 3rd Regiment of the Army Air Corps where he was employed as an arming and loading point commander. He also prepared Apache helicopters for combat. A spokesman for Bracknell Forest Council said the authority could not talk about the Lance Corporal's circumstances. 'While we cannot comment on individual cases, places on the housing list are based on the need of applicants,' the spokesman said. unfrickenbeleivable! what is it with local council t@ssers? Ex forces/serving forces should be priority to house, especially those with kids. |
| THEY JOINED FOR MANY REASONS, TO MARCH, TO SAIL, TO FLY. THEY WENT WHERE THEY WERE POSTED, BUT NOBODY JOINS TO DIE. THEIR LEADERS TALK ON TV, WHAT ELSE COULD WE HAVE DONE? BUT THOSE LEADERS LOST NO DAUGHTERS, AND NONE HAS LOST A SON. SO HERE'S TO ALL OUR SOLDIERS WHEREVER THEY MAY BE...AND HERES TO ALL THEIR FAMILIES, I RAISE A GLASS TO THEE...WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE. | |

Whatever happened to Homes For Heroes? £170,000 a year in benefits..... For an immigrant family. This guy fought for our freedom and safety, His family had to do without him when he was deployed abroad. Why the fcuk can't he have a home for him and his family?? Because we're too busy putting imigrants up in £1,200,000 houses. No money left for our own. Hang your head in shame England. You are the England these people defend with their lives..... And you WON'T house them. That's one of the worst kinds of BETRAYAL. |

I just hope this sort of thing starts to stop soon. Under Labour these stories were not reported. Now they are lets hope that someone in government catches on and gets with the program. |

It makes me fucking sick to the stomach, reading shit like this. What about all the fuckers flooding into the country, who have never lived in the local areas. He's lived in Afghanistan for the last few months so perhaps he's entitled to somebody's home there. |

I say evict that afgan family form the 1mil home and give it to this soilder and put the afgans in the sh1tty accommodation that soldiers have to endure on barracks ....... ffs |

ex-squaddie here as well, but knew how you were treated so bought my own house before i came out. There has got to come a time when the lads and lasses who put their lives on the line every day for this country are treated with more respect and compassion than immigrants who owe this great nation nothing. Political Correctness has turned this country into a laughing stock and we need to change peoples perceptions of how this tiny island is a gold mine to any tom dick and hussain who can get to live here |

That's a sad but all too familiar story, all respect to you for sharing this. If I remember correctly, this has been highlighted on a TV documentary at some point over the last year and I never realised just how widespread the problem was. A few possible explanations for this situation were put forward including the folk leaving the services feel they're also leaving a 'family' with a 'family structure' they have become accustomed to and reliant upon. I served for 15 years until 1983 and still feel I've left much more than a job, a career or a lifestyle. That 'family structure' element was important to me personally and I've never really settled, even to this day. I wish this guy all the luck in the world at finding somewhere to live and wonder how many immigrants with no local connection in the area are housed by the same local authority? |

I really don't understand that our government let us go to war to try and kick the Taliban's ass (amongst other things £$£$£$) yet the same country who wants rid of the jihad lovers oversea's don't do anything to the jihad living in England and there supporters. Maybe we need some mad Yardie/Colombian Drug warlord to take charge. I mean they couldn't be any worse then what we got now and what we defo have had in the past with Nu-Labour. |
