Females are told to be on their guard after man grabbed hold of victim in city

7:00am Friday 24th September 2010
By Steve Wright

A saleswoman is warning other females to be on their guard after a man made sexual comments and grabbed her as she walked in the centre of Bradford.

The 24-year-old Bradford woman, who does not want to be identified, was so shocked by the lunch-time experience she was left in floods of tears and had to take two days off work.

She had left a restaurant, which she had visited on business, and was walking across Centenary Square when she was approached by the seedy stranger.

“I noticed this scruffy man coming towards me, making a beeline for me,” she said.

“He came right up to me and said ‘I like sex,’ twice. I told him: ‘I can’t help you, there,’ but then he said ‘please, please, I’m desperate,’ put his arms round my shoulders and tried to pull me down.

“I told him to remove his hands. He was an inch away from my face, saying ‘just a kiss.’ I didn’t know what to do.

“I was concerned about him. He was wearing a long coat and for all I knew he could have had a knife hidden under it.”

The victim said a witness came out of the restaurant and shouted to see if she was all right. She turned round and the man let go and disappeared.

She said: “I turned back and he was gone. He had wandered off fairly quickly because I could see him walking in the distance.”

She said police had told her the suspect had been seen on CCTV hanging around Centenary Square.

She said: “I wasn’t physically injured but I was shocked and spent most of the evening in tears. It was a frightening experience.

“I was concerned that he was wandering off towards the university and college, where there are lots of female students. I think this man is a danger to the public and he needs to be arrested and prosecuted.

“I want to alert other women to him. If they are approached they should get to the nearest shop or business as quickly as possible.”

She said he was an Asian man in his mid-30s who spoke broken English. He was 5ft 7in tall, with a moustache and full bushy black beard and was of medium build and with brown eyes.
He was wearing a khaki Army camouflage jacket, khaki woolly hat and blue jeans.

The incident occurred shortly before 1pm on Wednesday, September 15.

Inspector Kevin Pickles, of Bradford South Police, said: “This was a distressing and unsavoury incident for the victim. There would have been plenty of people in the area at the time and I would ask that any witnesses, or anyone with any information, contact the City Ward Neighbourhood Policing Team, on 0845 6060606, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

THEY JOINED FOR MANY REASONS, TO MARCH, TO SAIL, TO FLY. THEY WENT WHERE THEY WERE POSTED, BUT NOBODY JOINS TO DIE. THEIR LEADERS TALK ON TV, WHAT ELSE COULD WE HAVE DONE? BUT THOSE LEADERS LOST NO DAUGHTERS, AND NONE HAS LOST A SON. SO HERE'S TO ALL OUR SOLDIERS WHEREVER THEY MAY BE...AND HERES TO ALL THEIR FAMILIES, I RAISE A GLASS TO THEE...WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE.

No-one, not one, gives you the right to tell anyone, not anyone, what to believe in,
As long as I've got a hole in my arse, I will fight for that right.
