EDL Outreach; Ideas needed please

I posted this topic under my last user name which unfortunately I had to have removed for my own survival.

Basically, who thinks it would be a good idea to reach out to organisations who might share our aims and stand beside us? Perhaps Sikh groups, gay groups, ex-Muslim groups, groups against slavery, animal welfare groups and women's rights groups, that kind of thing.

I think this would benefit us in two ways. 1)It would counter the idea that we are an all white, all skins group. It would reflect the fact that a diverse range of people want to oppose extreme Islam.

2)It would put is in touch with like minded people, and boost our numbers for demos. The UAF would start to look even more stupid countering a group full of Sikhs etc.

Anyone like the idea? If so, does anyone know any suitable organisations?

I think it's a good idea. Ex Muslim groups especially. It would be tricky to get em on our side but if we did... :)

Yeah I think it would be WELL worth doing though, stength in numbers and unity and what not!

I'll be researching groups tomorrow and posting a list up on here to see what everyone thinks, in the mean time, please keep the feedback/suggestions coming!

Yeah Pyrus is right. Would need a reason for these people to join. Especially an ex-Muslim group who's members could face violence against them.

and, I hate to say it, why would respectable organisations with their own specific agendas what to shack up with what they, and their supporters, may well believe to be a racist or in some ways 'unpleasant' organisation?

I'm not saying we shouldn't try - just that we have to have a good idea of what it is we bring to the table

Publicity, the support of a large organisation (us), the chance to combat a common enemy (not violently, ideologically).

Just as it might suit us to have diverse friends, it might suit their organisation to say 'look, we have the support of everyday english people, hindus against halal are getting even bigger' or something like that!

I'm glad you think it's worth a try and I'm glad you've bought up the need to sell the benefits of aligning with us. I hadn't thought about that side of it and would definitely now address that in any letter of outreach I end up writing.

A Polish Division - the Sobieski League is an obvious one.

Bikers are usually more patriotic than most and used to hassle from OB. Go for the backpatch clubs first, then the others will follow.

Give the "protest the Pope" mob the chance to show they are not a bunch of cowardly hypocrites.

Here's my outreach suggestion. We create a charity to pay for safe-houses and new identities for muslims. 36% of the younger generation of adult muslims say that anyone who leaves islam should be executed.

We show the EDL in a totally different light. And we actually end up doing something to weaken the spread of islam in our society. We start an active process to erode the fanatical element of that religion. The Secular Society are working against the influence of religion in society; The Council of Ex-Muslims is a middle-class talking shop. The people who really need help leaving islam are those who are trapped by lack of education/finances/death threats.

I don't believe the problem is that we do not have support (in principal) from other groups in society (I do know that the majority of gay people are very opposed to islam). I believe the problem is that we give hostages to the media every time we turn up at a demo drunk, every time something kicks off and the police are attacked (liked Dudley2). We had some chap on here saying he brought a friend (ex-military) along to Dudley2 ready to join us, and when he saw the violence and abuse directed at the police, he said he would never support EDL.

We should stop meeting for demos drunk. And should instead descend on town centres with buckets to collect money for this charity.

Of course, helping someone to leave islam is probably worthy of a fatwa.

definitely sounds like a worthy cause, but I'm not sure how we'd go about it

what I definitely wouldn't want to see would be 'us' sheltering apostates, and then getting caught up in violence when 'the mob' comes a-calling

even the threat of violence could have a negative result on our image - extensive fund raising for a charity yes, operating one no

just my immediate reaction
