Joanne Bailey
Solicitor, 30, Bradford

“The first time I wore my hijab into the office, I was so nervous, I stood outside on the phone to my friend for ages going, ‘What on earth is everyone going to say?’ When I walked in, a couple of people asked, ‘Why are you wearing that scarf? I didn’t know you were a Muslim.’

“I’m the last person you’d expect to convert to Islam: I had a very sheltered, working-class upbringing in South Yorkshire. I’d hardly even seen a Muslim before I went to university.

“In my first job at a solicitor’s firm in Barnsley, I remember desperately trying to play the role of the young, single, career woman: obsessively dieting, shopping and going to bars – but I never felt truly comfortable.

“Then one afternoon in 2004 everything changed: I was chatting to a Muslim friend over coffee, when he noticed the little gold crucifix around my neck. He said, ‘Do you believe in God, then?’ I wore it more for fashion than religion and said, ‘No, I don’t think so,’ and he started talking about his faith.

“I brushed him off at first, but his words stuck in my mind. A few days later, I found myself ordering a copy of the Koran on the internet...

There's more....

They all seem to need to suffer from a natural need 'to belong' to something. There are some implicit failures in our society which have led to this. Belonging to a 'common weal' (a common wealth) and to England, has been denied us, for one thing.

And for many people, or so it seems, the Church of England no longer offers the spiritual and moral guidance which a believer might need.

As per usual they all fit the basic template of misfits looking to belong to something.

Some are obviously also partially motivated by a adolescent desire to piss their parents off.

The main reason is also propoganda because you have so many liberals and others telling us how great this religion is.

I wonder if she knows that Mohammed had many wives and concubines and married a child?

I wonder if she knows what the Hadiths really say?

You had an exhibition in London about the wonders of Islam; yes, really!

The more Islamized a nation becomes then the more backward it becomes; the end result being Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran, or Pakistan.

Hardly nations of open values or high science in the modern world.

So now she supports a person who believes in stoning people to death for adultery (despite the fact that he had at least 9 wives and many concubines and a child bride). Work than one out?

So now she supports killing apostates and she will learn basic Arabic and look to another culture (Pagan Arabs, Jewish Arabs, and Christian Arabs created Arabic).

But in her world, maybe, Mohammed will have been transformed into something he wasn't.

Like Cat Stevens she will say how loving this religion is and go on pilgrimage to Mecca. But of course in the lands of Mecca and Medina it is clear that no other religion is allowed, women can not drive cars, you can not even mix in a shopping mall, and in this nation many old men marry children.

Yet, the Christian churches say little; the mass media glosses over everything; and Prince Charles continues to be in love with this religion.

I remember a heroin drug dealer converting to Islam because he said the West had no morals; how strange, becasue nearly all heroin in the U.K. comes from Islamic dealers in Afghanistan and who then transport it via Pakistan and Central Asia and so on.

You don't see a lot of equality in mainly Muslim nations but you do see a lot of rampant poverty and despotism; and of course major restrictions.

I've noticed that there are two types of converts

1) the secular Muslim who drinks, shags, is a party animal and eats pork and then their kill switch is activated like some sort of Manchurian Candidate and they become hoiler than thou. my impression is that its a combination of a having a need to rebel and then ultimately coming to the realisation they can't have it all so back they go into the fold. Its like a mid-life crisis and they cant take or understand the freedoms they have ultimately beacuse they never had them in the first place

2) the person who isn't a Muslim, a) either has totally gone off the rails or b) had a yearning for belonging or spiritual awareness / awaking. they get islam lite, the redacted version, but its ok to them because they need to be told what to do and how to think. They need rules, they need conformity and submission, again because they simply haven't had that before in their lives. but that time it's too late, they are part of the brotherhood, and they have to stand by their fellow Muslims worldwide. Which sounds great in practice until you realise you're justifying extremists because they follow the same Quran.

IF you want to get in touch with the divine, choose something that doesn't prescribe to the annihilation of others who don't share your views.

Whenever i think of converts i think of this joke.

An HR manager was knocked down (tragically) by a bus and was killed. Her soul arrived at the Pearly Gates, where St.Peter welcomed her. “Before you get settled in” he said, “We have a little problem...you see, we’ve never had a HR manager make it this far before and we’re not really sure what to do with you.”

“Oh, I see,” said the woman, “can’t you just let me in?”

“Well, I’d like to,” said St Peter, “But I have higher orders. We’re instructed to let you have a day in hell and a day in heaven, and then you are to choose where you’d like to go for all eternity.”

“Actually, I think I’d prefer heaven”, said the woman. “Sorry, we have rules...” at which St. Peter put the HR manager into the downward bound elevator.

As the doors opened in Hell she stepped out onto a beautiful golf course. In the distance was a country club; around her were many friends, past fellow executives, all smartly dressed, happy, and cheering for her. They ran up and kissed her on both cheeks, and they talked about old times.

They played a perfect round of golf and afterwards went to the country club where she enjoyed a superb steak and lobster dinner. She met the Devil (who was actually rather nice) and she had a wonderful night telling jokes and dancing.

Before she knew it, it was time to leave. Everyone shook her hand and waved goodbye as she stepped into the elevator. The elevator went back up to heaven where St. Peter was waiting for her. “Now it’s time to spend a day in heaven,” he said.

So she spent the next 24 hours lounging around on clouds, playing the harp and singing; which was almost as enjoyable as her day in Hell. At the day’s end St. Peter returned. “So,” he said, “You’ve spent a day in hell and you’ve spent a day in heaven”. “You must choose between the two.”

The woman thought for a second and replied: “Well, heaven is certainly lovely, but I actually had a better time in hell. I choose Hell.”

Accordingly, St. Peter took her to the elevator again and she went back down to hell. When the doors of the elevator opened she found herself standing in a desolate wasteland covered in garbage and filth. She saw her friends dressed in rags, picking up rubbish and putting it in old sacks. The Devil approached and put his arm around her.

“I don’t understand,” stuttered the HR manager, “The other day I was here, and there was a golf course, and a country club. We ate lobster, and we danced and had a wonderful happy time. Now all there is, is just dirty wasteland of garbage and all my friends look miserable.”

The Devil simply looked at her and smiled, “Yesterday we were recruiting you, today you’re staff.”

How can people read that s**te and think "Yes, this is the way to lead a life - where the men shag 6 year old girls and where we would all like to do nothing more than kill the Jews."

Well, good luck to them I say. They will need it when they are in the depths of hell for betraying their ancestors.

Good points raised by Human Target.
I think one of the reasons the islamist vultures have scented the carrion is that they know there is a certain hollowness or emptiness associated with our consumerist, dumbed down celebrity culture, and for that matter with the dull conformity of the leftists.
They aim to move into this vacuum, recruit and take over. We, as part of a broader social movement, need to extol the virtues of British & western science, democracy, art, freedom etc, rather than belittle all our acheivements as the left and PC do.

On another point, last night I attended a public lecture in Inverness given by the evolutionary biologist Prof. Richard Dawkins, the talk was mainly about science rather than politics, but the subject of evolution vs creationism did come up, and he said he had many letters from teachers "in certain areas of the UK" saying that most of the opposition to the teaching of evolution ie, heckling in class, opposition from parents etc, came from "how can I put this, people from extreme islamic backgrounds"....
Winston Churchill on Islam ; ' The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world....

What has to be noted is that all religions try to do this kinda thing.

I have a member of my own family who ran away to something called a Jesus army where she met a man who was once a drug addict but now a reformed blah blah blah.

Only went to his funeral to see how creepy the group was!!

The interesting question would be how many of these people a) were in a relationship with a muslim (all the converts I've met have been), b) live in muslim areas and want to fit in (we are all sheep - even I feel strangely drawn to the burka).

Even if none of the above applied, Jim Jones (and many other stupid cults) manage to attract people who are lost. Does that mean the People's Temple was a good thing?

not in Hinduism, Buddhism, Buddhism or Sikhism, there is no compulsion to convert. It's not a thing that is commanded or is required to happen

HS , both your points you mentioned are valid re: relationships and larger Muslim areas.

you've got your subtle forms of coercion and not so subtle i.e forced to convert, blackmailed into being converted, and typical brainwashing techniques to isolate you from everything else.

Bang on. We need to reclaim our history and understand how we came to be the way we are, where we are headed and how to live. Our philosophical contribution to modern Western values is second to none.

The PC brigade have stripped us of an awareness of our past (very dangerous to do that) - mostly deliberately, sometimes through well-intentioned but misguided/deluded hopes.

LOL exactly! :D

At the dinner table - it's either, "I'm a vegetarian", "I've had a tattoo" or, "I've changed my name to Mohammed (peace be upon him)". ^_^

It's disgusting, but that more to poverty then to religion. this happens not only in Muslims countries. IF you have no social welfare system there is no one to help you when you fall

they [Islamist proselytisers] know there is a certain hollowness or emptiness associated with our consumerist, dumbed down celebrity culture, and for that matter with the dull conformity of the leftists.

Ours has become a very permissive society. In some respects this has brought certain benefits/freedoms, but it has also brought great damage to the fabric of society, the glue which binds us together. I sometimes feel we live in a moral free-for-all where everyone decides for themselves what is right and wrong. This cannot be a good thing. There have to be common moral standards which go beyond merely observing the law of the land, which is itself (the Rule of Law) under threat. Christianity once provided some kind of basis, whatever the flaws of the various churches. But they became wishy-washy and PC-infected and no longer hold any moral authority. Nothing has replaced the Church or 'the old ways of doing things' apart from the concept of 'the individual' (me,me,me), political correctness and, in the political-economic sphere, rampant free-marketism.

The common well-being of the majority of people has to be the starting point for the establishment of moral order. We can't have everyone running around doing what they want, whether it's out-of-control drunks on Saturday nights, immigrants not adapting to the host culture, politicians lining their pockets or fat cat bankers/chief executives making immoral profits. Moral chaos only benefits extremists of whatever stripe, waiting in the wings. Modern permissive British society has been likened to that in Weimar Germany - a period of permissive moral chaos from which the Nazis emerged as a result and as a response to.

Aha ! so you're attracted to the burqah ! no we know what you'll be wearing to the next demo ! :D
I remember when I lived in Hackney many moons ago, some enterprising and cheeky type wrote to the local paper saying that burqahs were sexy as he could get underneath his girlfriend's outside the mosque and give her a bj ... it actually slipped through the pc censor and was published and caaused a right old stir amongst the allah akbar brigade !
