THE English Defence League has dropped its plans to demonstrate against a mosque in a Midland town. The controversial group had arranged to march through Walsall on June 19 to oppose proposals to convert a disused warehouse into an Islamic place of worship. The scheme, put forward by the town’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, has been rejected. The group is currently appealing against the decision. And EDL spokesman Steve Simmons said their action had been “postponed” for “research to be carried out into the area’s Muslim population”. But he warned that a planned protest in July against mosque plans in Dudley was still going ahead. And he added that the group was also looking at returning to Birmingham with a protest in Alum Rock “sometime in the summer”. The proposals for the Walsall mosque attracted 800 objections – many of whom were Muslim. Walsall South MP Valerie Vaz said: “Those who objected felt there were enough mosques here. All this is really a question of people coming from outside and misunderstanding the situation and a lot of the objections came from within the Muslim community.” Walsall Council leader Mike Bird said: “I’d like to thank my council colleagues, the Labour and Liberal Democrat group leaders, for joining me to send out a very clear message that the English Defence League were not welcome here. “We remain vigilant for any changes to the situation.” Previous protests by the EDL in the Midlands led to a number of arrests. The first demonstration in Dudley at Easter forced traders to shut up shop for the day, causing significant loss of business. Members of the group then returned to the town unannounced earlier this month, breaking into a building before disturbing locals by playing Islamic calls to prayer as they held a rooftop protest. http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2010/05/28/english-defence-league-scrap-walsall-protest-plan-new-birmingham-march-97319-26540569/ (Note: Walsall Muslims objected to the Mosque because they consider the Ahmaddiya sect to be outside the fold of Islam.) The sunni muslims DID NOT oppose the mosque because there are enough mosques in our town they opposed it because they hate the ahmyddia sect as much as they hate us! The sunni muslims beleive they have the right to build mosques where-ever they want but when they oppose a place of worship from an other group being built it gets stopped. This is just strengthening our case. Im from walsall division and i researched all the planning applications for this site and the different sects of the islamic communities in walsall and i can tell you now the sunni hate all the other sects and will do anything to oppress them. |
