Is Pakistan Going Mad ?

Here is a report on Pakistan's response to the International Draw Muhammed Day, with some useful links, in today's National Secular Society email newsletter ;

Is Pakistan going mad?
Last week the European Union condemned Pakistan over its growing religious mania, particularly over blasphemy and the ill-treatment of women.

The country has also banned the social networking group Facebook and 800 web pages because of the supposed blasphemy of 'Everybody Draw Mohammad Day'. Reportedly, 24 Pakistani religious groups have banded together at a meeting to demand that the UN enact a global blasphemy law that carries the death penalty.

"Leaders of the ruling as well as of the opposition parties will also be called [on] for their support," the meeting decided. There were calls at the meeting for the Muslim world to "unite, introduce its own currency and develop a joint defence system." The Muslim world should also spend the income from oil and other resources on the defence of Muslims and boycott all goods from countries where the "blasphemous cartoons" were published.

The meeting also decided to hold a public meeting in Islamabad against "profane" caricatures. Top leaders of almost all religious and religio-political parties will address this meeting. There was also consensus that the groups should continue to hold public meetings and seminars and use other means to mobilise the people against "profanity".

Winston Churchill on Islam ; ' The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world....

The Muslim world should also spend the income from oil and other resources on the defence of Muslims and boycott all goods from countries where the "blasphemous cartoons" were published.
In that case, they will be boycotting pretty much every country in the world lol.

'Cut off the nose to spite the face' springs to mind. :)

If the West pulled their finger out and dramatically reduced their need for oil, the muslim countries that want to boycott us would be well and truly f*cked. Perhaps as Pakistan doesn't supply any oil, it's easier for them to suggest these things.

In the past I would have laughed, but the UN is dominated by the Organisation of Islamic Countries and they heavily influence the UN. A law that calls for the death sentence for drawing pictures of Muhammed is a distinct possibility

When Pakistan was created - The British had previously made Blasphemy laws which were put in place to protect "all religions" in the secular society. Once Islamists had gained most political power over all other groups/religions - Muslims "changed" the blasphemy laws to only apply to "Islam."

Ever since Christians etc have been accused of all manner of Blasphemy (often false charges and accusations) Even minor Islamic sects such as Ahmadi Muslims have been accused of Blasphemy and are considered Infidels/apostates (not real Muslims by other majority Islamic sects)

Of course most people (none Muslims) in Pakistan have either been killed, or had to flee to other countries due to Islamic persecution. Hence Pakistan is now the second largest Muslim population in the world.
