Please feel free to move this to "Off Topic" if it is off-topic. Over on another thread (which shall remain nameless) one of our newer moderate supporters (who shall remain nameless), posted a picture claiming it is him (who cares - no-one knows you're a dog on the internet): http://www.life.com/image/77816661 What I find quite fascinating in those still pictures he posted is how white that concert is. This is in Brixton. I notice the same thing when I go to stately homes, museums, art galleries, classical concerts.... it's extremely rare to see a non-white face at these cultural events. In fact, it's so rare, that I often scan the crowds to see if I can find one non-white face. I'll be lucky to find more than one. I had thought it was as much a class thing as anything else [ya see, I'm trying to drag myself out of the slime that is working class life ]. But seeing that concert makes me think otherwise. I don't think that's the same bunch of white people who go to the Albert Hall. It seems quite troubling to me that people don't even mix at cultural/social events such as these. What kind of shared culture do we have? Is it the same at football grounds? I hope not. If it is, then it looks like the only shared social experience most people have is being on the same street shopping, or sharing public transport. I'll say this for my 20 years of trolling round gay night clubs, there was always more ethnic diversity than I've seen at other social events. |

Interesting observation HS. I hadn't really thought about it. But on reflection there is some truth in it. I go to a black church..I'm the only white person there. (Oddly enough the church is in Brixton!). It doesn't bother me in the slightest, but now that I think about it, look at Glastonbury, how many black faces do you see? I think you have raised a very interesting point. I don't think we have much in the way of shared cultural interests, although we probably share many other things in terms of politics and other related things. |

I will say as I go to many Ska, Skin , and ( dont laught ) folk gigs, yes there is an even balence. Its up to what floats your cultural boat I think. I dont do statley homes for instance, no intrest, Art again not my thing, music however is. While I would say at folk festivals there are far more white folks, the skin and ska sceen are maybe the other way. folk now is seeing more non white folks showing there skills and making traditional folk music. So I say its more culture than anything else. |

Ahhhh, memories......I used to go to that Cinema (before it became the Fridge), as a kid. It must be the only Cinema not yet turned into a mosque lol. (Rather than waste so much time here, wouldn't the peep be more useful spreading his/her words of wisdom to the those that need it most - but then he/she knows fine well his/her days would be numbered - he/she would probably end up in some suitcase floating down the Thames!) |

Watching the London marathon this year I was struck by the same thing, the only blacks running were the professional athletes. All the people running for charity and in funny costumes were white, no enrichers at all. |

Again I was struck by this thing tonight, watching Eurovision. At various points they would cut to webcams in the homes of viewers where you could see them taking part in the show. But there were no non-white viewers in any of these homes (as far as I can remember). All the presenters (except 1 of the Norwegians, and 1 of the French were white). France put up a group that was mostly non-white, and in the interval Norway put on a time-filler act which had 2 non-white men in it. Considering the vast numbers of people involved, and this thing went on for about 3 hours non-stop, there were statistically zero non-white people (about 7 people from about thousands). And I got the impression that certainly with the interval act, the Norwegians were being perhaps deliberately PC in trying to have some non-white act involved. |
