Excluding Wilders; What democracy?

A former leader of the Dutch Christian Democrats, 87-year-old Willem Aantjes, has called on his party to rule out coalition talks with the extreme right Freedom Party.

Mr Aantjes says the party, led by anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, is undemocratic and not fit to be in a coalition government with the Christian Democrats. The Freedom Party has no members and is accountable to nobody, according to Mr Aantjes.

The former leader wants the congress of his party to discuss the issue next week. If it is not put on the agenda, and if the Christian Democrats do not rule out talks with the Freedom Party, Mr Aantjes said he would vote for the Christian Union party instead in the 9 June general election.

No party is expected to gain an overall majority, so as is usual in the Netherlands, coalition talks will decide which combination of parties will form the next government.

There seems to be a silence in the English press about Geert.

amusing... at him being a nazi. I love how he calls geert wilders far right.. lmao... Shame on him... just because he is old and don't care what direction their country is going... he needs to look at what he stood for when he was younger. He should at least make himself a useful nazi not a traitor. lol..

I am sure that Dutch has just pasted that summary into this thread, and he knows full well that the PVV is not a far-right party in the sense that the media would like us to think it is. (Personally I hate the right-wing/left-wing simplification of political opinion - I can't be alone in having had the poverty of that schema pointed out to me as an 18 year old politics student three decades ago).

The natural home for gay voters is the liberal left, yet in the Netherlands gay people are overwhelmingly going to vote for Wilders and his Freedom Party - see http://www.pvv.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2088:geert-wilders-qik-heb-de-feiten-en-de-kiezers-aan-mijn-kantq&catid=6:pers&Itemid=158

Rather than translate that (badly) myself, I found it translated on The Gates of Vienna (the PvdA is the Netherlands' Labour Party):

Quote:

The PvdA continues to play the card of moral superiority. While I simply say, my party is a lot better than yours. He makes such remarks so as not to alienate the Muslim voter, now that he has almost no other voters left. But it is precisely these kinds of Sharia Socialists who are responsible for the growth of the multicultural society, and now they are at the infusion of the same multicultural society. While all along they should struggle against the disadvantages of it: the precarious position of women, unbelievers, homosexuals. We are doing their job.

Why were we the number one at the web site of the Gay Krant [Gay Magazine]? Does nobody ever think? Because homosexuals in the neighborhoods daily encounter the consequences of the Islamization. They see Van der Laan come up with his neighborhood-coach and an additional touch of paint. These people have totally different problems. They don’t want that other intolerant Netherlands the “elite” enforces upon them.

http://gatesofvienna.blogspot.com/2009/07/elite-revolt-against-geert-wilders.html

It's exactly how I see things. The liberal/left are unashamed of their betrayal of women's rights, gay rights, and democracy.

Wilders' PVV is against centralization and for individual freedom. They would be better referred to as a Libertarian Party than a far-right party.

I'm fairly confident that Dutch will agree with this. I wish we had a Libertarian Party in this country. By definition it would stand opposed to a theocratic ideology that abhors freedom.

It was my commitment to supporting Wilders that led me to the demo on 5th March, and my first contact with EDL. The last politician in this country who bore a resemblance to Wilders was Churchill. We've had nothing put political pygmies ever since.

I think calling our Labour Party "sharia socialists" would be very appropriate. After all, it was they who introduced the sharia courts into Britain.

Yes HS, it is a libertarian sort of party. It is one of the reasons the Dutch in general like it. It stands for true individual freedom, a thing that has been absent from Dutch politics for much too long.
In the face of fear though, the political elites appeasing a monster they have created themselves and that in the end gained too much of an influence on society to ignore.
