http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/australian-born-familes-will-be-minority-in-15-years-claims-macroplan-australia/story-e6freuzr-1225855016927

50% of population will be migrant-born by 2025
Rising immigration, ageing population the cause
UK still provides country with most migrants
THE Australian-born family will be a minority social group within 15 years, according to new research.
Rising immigration and an ageing population mean migrant families will outnumber Australian-born residents by 2025, says demographic consultancy Macroplan Australia.

According to 2006 census data, 40 per cent of Australia's population were either born overseas or had at least one parent who was born overseas.

But if immigration continues at current levels, that will jump to more than 50 per cent by 2025.

The news comes days after the appointment of Tony Burke as Australia's first population minister, given the task of managing the influx of migrants expected to help swell the population to 36 million by 2050 - up from 22 million today.

As he was sworn in, a survey of 3,000 people revealed that 70 per cent of Australians do not want a bigger population, and less than a quarter favoured immigration as the main conributor.

But experts say the migrant majority will be a healthy development for Australian culture and attitudes.

"It is all adding to the cosmopolitan nature of modern Australia," said Bernard Salt, a demographer at KPMG.

"It means our views become less blinkered and we become more tolerant, confident, engaged, opportunistic and optimistic because we are open to new ideas and not obsessed with keeping things the same."

Brian Haratsis, CEO of Macroplan, says Australia's current population tends to "stare at our shoes and say we're the best in the world" instead of embracing new ideas.

"If you speak to most people today they don't want more people because they associate it with problems," he said.

"But while immigration need to be managed with better infrastructure, we also need high immigration for sound economic reasons - if we don't, we'll all end up paying higher taxes."

The UK still provides the most migrants each year, with 14.2 per cent of the total.

On a serious note, immigration to Oz is going to become the same issue as it is here in the UK because a very large chunk of it is coming from third world nations such as Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
Australia has a very large south east asian immigrant population (Vietnamese etc) but these people, for the most part, have assimilated well and cause very few problems.
They are hard working and studious.
As it stands now, considering the still tiny number of new immigrants from third world countries, the crime rate these immigrants are responsible for is very telling.
Back in ther 70s and 80s Australia took a large influx of Lebanese immigrants and today it's the Lebanese muslim youth that are by far the worst offenders.

What triggered the Cronulla riots in 2005, were several violent attacks on life savers by Lebanese youths. Before that, these youths had also been bothering countless other beach goers, thereby trying to show they dominated it.
The riots were a backlash to that.

Romper Stomper was a great film.
You do understand the point it's trying to make because i've met people in the past who have seen it and the point totally escaped them.

What is it with the Lebs?

They definitely don't want to take more Somalians. They really are a strange bunch.
Nobody should take them, force them to stay in their oc**try and sort their mess out.

They can't seem to leave their barbaric war mentality at home.

Yes I understand the point of Romper Stomper, it wasn't a pro skinhead film at all, not pro racist, not pro nazi....it pointed out the futility and meaninglessness of these opinions.
It was a powerful film.

Okay, I sincerely apologise for my stereotyping Aussies as convicts. I'd like to make it up, I'll change your user name for you, which would you prefer? Ocker or Bogan Boy? Listen, I've got some great Aussie jokes, they were given to me by a New Zealander, would you like to hear them? Perhaps not then. :D

Oh yes, bring those Aussie jokes on Road...I love a good joke.
But, chances are if they've come from some backwoods sheep shagging Kiwi then it's been stolen and the names have been changed ;-)

I'm impressed you know bogan by the way. For those unfamiliar with the term, bogan is an aussie chav.

I sense some aussie in you Road, that's an aussie bird as your avatar, after all.
