what would the anglo saxons have looked like? I mean like red hair is mostly credited to celtic blood, but does the fact that i am dark haired mean that i am not of anglo saxon blood? As i always think of them having mostly blond hair is this correct? I had blond hair when i was younger that has darkend with age to almost black now does this signify anything? Just curous and interested where i come from and what blood runs through my viens. |

Anglo-Saxons precede the 1066 Norman Conquest, which was part French part Scandinavian, according to my Random House Dictionary (complied by 14 professors) which goes on to say the words Anglo Saxon came from Medieival Latin when the two words then were Angles Saxonis which was a Latinisation of the Old English Angle Seaxon. This is just from a dictionary, so it is more of a clue than the whole explanation, but an illustrated encyclopaedia would have the fuller story hopefully. Bit shocked that they don't teach this in schools, actually. I sort of remember being taught a bit of this in History lessons, also I suggest Professor Simon Schama/Shama, an historian who did a popular television documetary series on British History ten years ago or so. The Anglo-Saxons came over to Britain after the Holy Roman Empire left in the 400's. They came from Saxony in Germany, Denmark, Holland and pretty much anywhere in German-speaking Europe. There is very little racial uniformity in the Anglo-Saxons, as there will have been Scandinavian and Central European genes in them - as well as those who had interbred with Roman citizens and slaves. As a guideline though, they are usually depicted as being fair to light brown haired, with any coloured eyes and of tall stature, though there will almost certainly have been black-haired, dark eyed Saxons descended from Atilla's people. The Wiki is more accurate than I Wiki Saxonshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxons |

you would have to get your dna tested to find your ethnic origin. some english have more north european dna than others, some do have alot of south european dna, i wouldn`t worry about it too much. all my family have dark hair, alot of tribes have settled in england, some of the very old tribes like the britanni were from italy, it is true that anglo saxons originally were fair, as were the vikings, in england we have people with blond hair, ginger hair, dark hair, but we are all united in being english. modern english culture and language is all a mixture of the various european tribes that settled here. |
