HFA is the halal lite of the halal world and is used by most of the 'Western' brands for their 'halalness'. HMC is the more heavy duty halal http://www.halalmc.net/certified_outlets/certified_rests_tways.html . |

I would imagine that most halal confectionery is merely without any meat products (such as gelatine and rennet) and without any alcohol. So it would really just be vegetarian without alcohol. Having said that gelatine can be used and be halal (gelatine can come from pork or cattle, obviously halal gelatine would be from cattle slaughtered by the halal method) so the safest way is to check the ingredients. I would imagine that most manufacturers would try to just make a vegetarian product, that way you can market it to mainstream people, veggies and Muslims/Kosher all together. If in doubt and it is important to you, then email the manufacturer, which would have two benefits, one, to confirm 100% and two, to let them know that there is a concern about halal products. |

Mars website directed me here http://www.gmwa.org.uk/foodguide2/index.php It would appear M&Ms are haram. One of the few mars choccies I don't like unfortunately. What I am really interested is whether or not Mars have to pay a fee anywhere along the line for some psycho with a beard to say a prayer for my food. I guess that will require an email more eloquent than this post. |
