I was living in southern california in the 80s about 100 miles from los angeles and let me tell you before 1988 (when the movie colors came out) virtually no one outside of L.A knew what a crip was or a blood was. When the movie colors came out it seemed to spread like wildfire little crips and bloods gangs popped out of nowhere all across california and throughout the states. Now these little buggers are in the U.K?? |

Sure, we can let them all kill each other, but how many innocents get killed in the crossfire? Too frekin' many. A poor lady who lived around the corner from me got shot in the back in her own home after some kid tired to do a drive by shooting on another kid and shot the woman. These idiots need to wise the fuck up. The powers at be, however, love it because when the population fights among themselves, they leave the power elite alone. |

I was into Hip Hop right up till 1988 as it was all Breakdaning and Electro tunes but in 1988 when Colours and Gangster Rap came out from L.A. while in New York you had the political Rap of Public Enemy and it's sing was a follower of the Nation of Islam it just got s**t alongside the MTV video hype and Hip Hop/Rap was dead to me at least House music then Acid covered it for me. Have a look at Dr.Dre when he started N.W.A. in 1987/88 and have a look at him a year before when he was in The World Class Weckin Crew. |

LOL Yeah, i remember those records, i had the one on your image and their album before that called world class, uncle jamms army too, ice t would rap and breakdance during those shows. kid frost had a couple of records back then in 84 and 85 before his laraza crap took hold. i agree with you hip hop went to s**t after the gangstas got a hold of it. Are you in the U.K or a yank like me? |

Nice one Iam in the UK and was to young and missed out on all the Punk/Ska/Mod and Soulboy stuff but got into the Electro as it's not the rapping but the synth thing which came from the New Romantics (which i liked but still to young and that). Love all that music from 1982-1987 and would buy the UK comps called Streetsounds Electro and buy 1986 me and me mates where all into Electro,Hip Hop,Chicago House,Go-Go and Trouble-Funk and the Miami Bass sound which kept the Electro sound going till 1988. Kid Frost now i remember him also liked Cybtron it became all that Detroit Techno. |

That is AMAZING that all of those songs were known in the U.K most of those jams never got radio airplay here in the states except for a few a.m stations. When i was in high school in 85' their were some chickanos in my study hall class that would play terminator by kid frost over and over and over and over and over again i got sick of it, however i like to listen to those jams now and then .I miss the early to mid 80s here in the states U.K bands dominated the top 40 radio duran duran, the police, culture club, wham the clash, these guys were musical geniuses. |

Yep Britain had great music and youth scenes from the mid/late 1970's to the early/mid 1980's be it Pop/Rock/Reggae and Soul.As the Punk thing died down and the charts became more pop and stale me and me mates where just into underground Black music from the states but by 1988 Hip Hop went Gangster and all that Public Enemy crap and became too black while House music became ACIDDEEEE .I think 1986 or 87 was the last great year for Hip Hop/Electro stateside and the UK. Loved the Arabian Prince and The Unknown DJ. Did you get into Miami Bass and when did it all change in L.A. with the Gangster bollocks and N.W.A. |

Yeah , the police are one of my all-time favorite bands from roxanne to wrapped around your finger, dont stand so close to me, and many more they made a good blend of ska, punk and pop I agree with your assesments about hip hop going to the s**tter in 88 you see when easy e first came out with boyz n the hood and nwas first ep in 87 a couple of those joints were catchy and ok but by the time straight outta compton came out it was total s**t, those east coast groups like public enemy, professor griff and paris were open 5 percenters, an offshoot of the nation of islam these guys were extremely afrocentric. so i agree with you it got too black. and the beats went to s**t. Oh YEAH miami bass was king even in s california around 86 to 89 ,in 86 a good many guys at my high school were getting nissan trucks putting 15' woofers in the back pumping out bass that would vibrate the entire school and neighborhood but it was a matter of time before the state of california made an ordinance that music could not be heard more than 50 ft from a vehicle, after a few $500.00 tickets were issued to violaters that craze almost died
