Would the companies who provide your internet want to cut people off though, I don't think so, they earn too much money from it all.

The digital rights bill is going to be another ID card fiasco! The government know nothing about IT systems and stand no chance of keeping up. As for letting the media industry write clause 18, it’s about digital piracy, is just INSANE!

What clause 18 means is, if a “media” company or you ISP (Internet Service Provider) SUSPECT that you have been up to no good they will , A: Limit your connection speed to that of pre dial up. Or B: Cut you off after 3 warnings.

Where this falls down is, anyone who is in a shared environment like at work, a shared house or a block of flats will all be tarred with the same brush. This is especially the case if you are sat behind a firewall with NAT (Network Address Translation), as I am and most of you who have a separate router will be. There is no legal way to track who and what PC/Laptop/Media device is behind that. Add to this most ISPs do not give fixed IP addresses (This is like being given someone else’s car reg every time you drive), so you may be totally innocent and targeted at any time. As happens NOW!

There are also questions about them blocking certain types of traffic that are seen as bad. But again it’s not all bad and you can’t punish people for doing nothing wrong! This is the case of P2P, except more and more products use it to send media about such as SkyTV, MMOPGs, PS3, Xbox.

So in short, many people will be unfairly cut off. There will be no trial or just process… Just the media company whim.

Thankfully it will not come in to affect for a year and you can do something about it!

This link will give you some options about how to hide your IP address and thus your location and who you are! This is also very useful for many other thing but we wont go in to that now.
How to hide your IP address
The one thing this does point out is that our current government are totally insane and are not to be trusted. Lets face it, I wonder how much ministers were paid to get this through by the media company’s.

Anyhow, I’m not an expert on this. I was just interested but have a whole load more techie info. PM if you want me to bore you.

World governments don't like the internet, it means citizens can unite to become stronger and share information. Just think how many things you have learnt about Islam, halal outlets, how Muslims can claim benefit for up to four wives etc. that you would have been blissfully ignorant about had you not been given news links here?

They will not leave the internet alone, they want to control it like they do all other aspects of your life. All control happens by drip feed, first it was censoring child porn sites, now it is media downloading, next they will try online blogs. Bit by bit they will attempt to take control.

By the way, ID cards are coming, they haven't gone away, straight after the election they'll be back on the agenda regardless of who wins.

Digital Economy Bill was forced through by the Government with the assistance of the Conservative opposition.

Complaints that the Bill is far too important to be passed through the “wash-up” period were ignored and after just two hours of debate in the Commons, it will now almost certainly become law.

A total of 650 MPs could have been present but only 236 bothered to turn up and many of those that did were still in for criticism.

It was painfully obvious to anyone watching the broadcast from Parliament this evening that any MP that only turned up for the divisions and not the debate does not care about the views of their constituents, does not care about democracy and does not care about the future of Britain’s digital economy.

This is the email I got this morring from 38 Degrees Team

Dear michael,

We fought a hard fight, but the Digital Economy Bill has now been forced through its crucial third reading in the House of Commons. 189 MPs voted in favour and 47 against. It will now almost certainly be law within days. [1]

Our adverts, and our people-powered avalanche of emails and phone calls caused a stir in Parliament. But the government was determined to ignore public opinion to force the Digital Economy Bill through.

Why did this happen? Music industry lobbyists have their fingerprints all over this law. The government's position can be traced back to a shadowy meeting between Peter Mandelson and Music Industry figures on a yacht in Corfu last summer. [2] And music industry lobbyists appear to have played a key role writing sections of the law. [3]

Right now, it's perfectly legal for corporate interests to lobby the government in secret. We can only guess how much the music industry spent to get this law passed. 38 Degrees members are campaigning for new rules to ban secret lobbying. If the public had a right to know who was lobbying whom, and what about, corporate lobbyists would find it a lot harder to pull strings behind the scenes. That would help stop stitch-ups like this happening again.

There's a general election in 4 weeks. Our next set of MPs will have to further debate small parts of the Digital Economy Bill. It's more important than ever that secret meetings with lobbyists are banned.

Will you write to your election candidates now and ask them to pledge to support new rules to ban secret lobbying?

We may not have won, but we showed that by working together we are powerful. Politicians now know that they can't just force through draconian internet laws without anyone noticing. Our people powered uprising scared the music industry so much they rushed out their own adverts to fight ours. We forced the bill up the political and media agenda, and created a real controversy.

38 Degrees is a people powered movement that brings you together with other people to take action on issues you care about. Over the next few weeks we'll be working with our partners on this campaign, Open Rights Group, to work out if there is more we can do together. We'll stand ready to get involved again if there's another chance to challenge this law, or if new draconian internet proposals rear their head. Our partners on this campaign, the Open Rights Group, will stay more focused on just this issue, so for more regular and detailed updates please join their action list here:

Thanks for being involved,

Johnny, Hannah, David, Nina and the 38 Degrees Team
