How are people doing work wise etc during these difficult economic times? I ask this question as someone who has gone from tradesmans money (min £90 a day) to earning what I can now. Been doing everything from sorting out peoples stores to scaffolding since last october, it's been shite but what can you do? The thing is because I've moved up north I've saved more money as I haven't been out apart from EDL activities, a few parades with my flute band and Loyalist meets ect, so I'm not spending the money. Hope others are 'getting by' at least? P.S. Don't have to explain or give away what you do. Just interested how us 'knuckledraggers' are getting on. |

Well I'm still at school living with my mum, and she's working in the public sector so I suppose she/we haven't really been affected. |

Well I'm 16, my parents are getting by, I ask them for money about once every 4 months now because I know they are quite hard up. I am looking for a part time job, to bring me in £20+, working one day a week for now. When I go to college in September, I will be studying an I.T course, working 3 days a week, so then I can work for at least two days a week. With the money I get, I will spend most of it on myself and my girlfriend. However, I will save a bit each week, probably as much as half of it sometimes. This money will go in the bank ready for when I'm older. |

First time in my life I am on the dole ( I am 43 ), get bugger all as I was medicaly discharged from the army after 12 years so get an army pension, my other half works although her wages aint great ( she is a carer ). So its tight, jobs here are scarse at the moment. Had to give up going to QPR ( held a season ticket for over 20 years ) except the very odd treat, dont go out except for divisional meetings and EDL demos. The plus side is I get too see alot of my grandaughter and have time to dedicate to the Essex and East Anglian divisions, the downer is it is me that has to do the housework so Debs can do overtime so we can afford gas/electric and food!!!! s**t happens though and we all bounce back. |

Just about keeping my head above water, but when you bear in mind I work in the IT industry (supposedly one of the boom areas) it ain't good. Things seemed to go down hill in IT after year 2000. Old Bill Gates with his User friendly applications, there is now little need for the IT specialist. Apart from which, a load of UK IT jobs have gone out to India where they are prepared to work for roughly a quarter of what someone in the UK would get paid for doing a similar job. UK service industries seem to be going the way of manufacturing i.e. down the pan. Makes you wonder what the generation coming up are going to do for a living. Perhaps we can move to an economy based on beef-burger production ?? |

I worked 50 hours this week, and after I paid the landlord his tax and every thing else I have £70 left... I stay at work hoping somebody will come around, self employment at the moment is not much fun. Wife went out to work so All I have to do is clear the overheads at the moment. Hardest thing is seeing the dole dossers out side the pub at lunch time when I have to decide between a chip barm or 12.5g of tobacco... |

My mother's a nurse, and my step-father a financial adviser for a small company which just got a 45 million pound contract with the MOD... The recession hasn't hit my family hard, but I work part-time at halfords and seen many things happen to the full timers. Not a good position to be in for those guys, since most of them are 40+ with no qualifications. I feel so bad knowing I'm doing a few hours a week knowing my parents can afford me, but these guys are being laid off and can't afford to dish out for their kids. I've offered to make myself redundant so a full-timer could stay, but they said no ;/ |

Well I was a self employed plasterer till it really bit then work just dried up. At my busiest I was earning £150 a day and I always had a big wad of notes in my pocket. I had to do something and quick so I took a job in a warehouse that basically paid my rent and kept food on the table I've been there ever since and have managed to carve out a little niche for myself because of my experience in other jobs that I have had (admin and IT). Have had 2 pay raises since I started which now means I can pay for rent, food AND beer so I'm happy as can be at the moment and barring redundancy or getting the sack I plan on sticking at what I am doing for the job security even though its just humping heavy boxes about all day, mostly. Incidentally I tried doing pj's on my weekends off but after a week doing very physical work in a warehouse I couldn't cope with it and now I just really enjoy my weekends off and they have become sacred in a way. |

I've been trying to get a part timr job. Worked as a Christmas temp in retail, but the shop couldn't afford to keep me on Jobs are just so difficult to get ahold of these days, and most people are settling for what they can get at this moment in time. |

I don't mind working, I quite enjoy helping people. I'd love to be able to sit on my arse all day and not work. But I can't do that, I've gotta be doing something. It also gives me skills, qualities and experience to move on. But I'm willing to give up my job so a full timer can stay, but the managers disagree -.-; |

I'm doing ok, I sell diamonds and all kinds of jewellery, the people that buy the kind of things I sell seem to have money anyway, and people are always getting either engaged or married. But some of my family are struggling, building work and such like, hopefully, they'll get by though. I do see some friends that are struggling and just can't seem to get work no matter what. |

You have youth on your side and an eagerness rarely seen in a lot of young folks these days. Try not to be too disheartened and keep plugging away at it, something will come along eventually

I'm 18 and at college, I get £30 a week EMA but that'll stop when I turn 19, I don't think we've been affected by the recession particularly but it has been a f**king nightmare trying to get a job. |

After getting laid off i had to go back to forklifting, i secured a full time job and two weeks before starting i had a motor bike accident and have been off since then. Triple fracture to the wrist , wiplash , and a broken collar bone. Lost all movement in wrist and doc said i will not have the movement to carry on with my studies. Now waiting to sue the roadworkers for the accident. So ive been off work through the whole thing. |

Self Employed I am now working on average of 2/3 days a week, going from I had enough work for a 8 day week 2 years ago. The missus earns a good wage but she is in the architect business and they have lost lots of government jobs and their staff has been cut by half. If all else fails on the game it is |

My son is doing manual labouring-mainly digging ditches and is having steroid injections into his back to keep him going, because of degenerating discs-top to bottom. He's finding it tough. He's a qualified chef by trade and is on a short list for a decent chefing job, he should hear next week. |

Doing better than most. tot a new job for an additional 40% ish pay last year. Got a small bonus this year. In line for another job at the new place that would probably mean another 40%ish on top of what I am getting now. I have been lucky this recession. I know plenty of people who haven't been and I am very greatful for how things have worked out for me. |
