Could the EDL take on other issues?

Does England/the UK need defending from other things?

I'd say we need defending from the damaging effects that political correctness and 'progressive' ideas have had on the education system. English school kids no longer know anything about their origins. Who has heard of our great political philosophers, our thinkers and writers, our revolutionaries and men of valour? How much do we know of Hobbes, Locke, Bentham, Burke, Smith? Other countries teach their children about their past and the people and events who made them what they are. We don't. Other countries name their streets after their greatest thinkers. We don't. Other countries know who they are, what they were and where they are going. We don't. How can we expect children from other countries to understand the country they have come to if they don't get taught about it? How can they respect a culture which throws its own history away? Hell, we don't even expect them to speak English - we employ translators for primary school Polish kids, for f**k's sake! How many taxpayer millions have been spent on translating pamphlets into 120 languages, for example?

The rot starts in the education system. I know. I was a teacher.

I'd like to see the EDL broadening their range of interests. All these things are often connected anyway. There are many people here of good common sense who are p***ed of at the madness that goes on all over the country. The tolerance shown in the UK for intolerant Islam is just one thing.

What else could the EDL take on? What do forum members think? Could we tackle more issues?

(It would wrong-foot the opposition also)

Agreed, there are many issues but where would it end?!! Like ujac said, we have got enough on our plate at the moment!! Lets just stick to the main cause, that way 100% is given. Give something all or nothing I reckon.

People have brought this up previously and the general consensus was to stay focused on the single issue - Islamic Extremism incorporating Sharia Law.

From my experience, bringing up other issues, even if the main issue (e.g. politicial correctness), can dilute the main message and create divisions within the group. There are many people with differing world views here, but with a consistent view on Islamic Extemism, and we wouldn't want to lose that to divisions over other issues.

That is just my view.

Who knows if EDL will turn it's attention to other things. But we have our hands full fighting militant islam for the next 5 to 10 years. If we fail at that, everything is moot.

I'd say the next 10-30, possibly more on a global scale. To be prepared for the long-haul means educating the next generations properly. How can we expect people to fight against something when they have been denied their own heritage/identity and may not know what it is they are fighting to defend?

The West's failing response to a resurgent Islam is deep-rooted. Banning the Burqa isn't enough as a reaction, welcome though it would be as a message of intent.

there are many things wrong with this country, mass immigration, crime, breakdown in family values, drugs, lack of jobs, but we can`t solve them all once, best just keep the edl focused on the islamic problems.

Yes, it is. Or was....RIP.

Much like this thread topic, I feel.

Still, if I was a parent I'd be straight down to the school and ask them WTF they're teaching my kids.

That sounds great.

How common is that?

Did you choose the school for that or did it happen whilst your daughter was already there?

I think its healthy for people to join other groups that represent their other issues as well as this one.

If you address the islam issue you will automatically adress :
• Freedom of speech and the right to make a caricature of any religion
• Sovereignty and the right of a nation to rule itself
• Women and children rights
• Secularism
• Security
• Animal rights
• Real democracy
• European laws (for example you can't expel convicted fanatics because of European laws )
• Integration and immigration
That's a pretty large spectrum to me , as islam touch every aspect of our lives:)

Thing is there are groups for each issue so to speak, I am EDL and also March for England, there is no problem with doing things you feel right and in many cases members and causes overlap. What is important is not to mix the issues up.
The EDL does what it does well because it is focused ( as do other groups) if we tackle a multitude of issues we become political by nature, where as I firmly believe we are social not political.
As has been said though, standing against sharia for example, if you break it down, tackles a whole host of things.
