Of the 3 bouts of trouble-making I witnessed at Dudley - the first involved a group of about 8 men ripping up a fence, I moved over but then let the steward run in front as I have no experience and have enough physical problems to deal with - the second involved the large group opposite the stage, and that group was cowed into behaving by the disapproval of the crowd - the third occurred right in front of my eyes at the end, when they tore up the cage on exiting the demo - my shouting at them had no effect, and because we were filing out, any stewards ahead of us could not get back through the throng to stop it. I don't think anything could have been done to stop the last one. And I hold the police responsible for suddenly letting up on their crowd control. I have to assume that was a deliberate decision, as once they tossers had pulled down the cage, the police didn't even chase after them. No amount of incompetence can explain the behaviour of the police there. Anyway, considering how successfully 1 steward controlled the first incident, and a largish crowd was controlled by disapproval, I think that time is of the essence, and social pressure is not to be under-rated. I'm suggesting that in future everyone equips themselves with a whistle. On the first sign of trouble people whistle, and point to the trouble-makers, and everyone nearby does the same. This will a) alert the stewards and show them the trouble-makers, b) shows the trouble-makers that the crowd is against them. I know that whistles on things like Gay Pride became a total pain in the arse, with lots of people blowing them in people's ears, etc. However, the original idea behind them 25 years ago was to raise an alarm to identify attackers/disruption. I've asked some division leaders to bring up this idea at their next meetings. I thought I'd raise it here to draw the attention of other divisions to the idea. And to see what response others have to this idea. |

its not a bad idea but 3000 people with them are just going to keep blowing them all the time and no one will take any notice all the stewards need 2 way radios and a command center to give out directions to them then if something does happen stewards can get to the trouble quicker a lot of stewards on sat didnt even know stuff was going on ,untill the few that did were over run with people |

Hi Richard Fair comments. My first demo will be the one coming up in Aylesbury so I can't speak from any first hand experience here. However I think I am correct in saying that the EDL stewards in Bolton in particular were able to work directly with the Police to remove undesirables. Can anyone who went to Bolton and Dubley advise if this was possible at the latter demo. That is it would look like the Police chose to erect a steel pen with the view of stopping people getting out however did that effectively mean that they couldn't get in to work with the EDL stewards. If that is the case then it is food for thought when speaking to the Police prior to future demonstrations. Regards |

I have to say good luck to the stewards i have lot of respect for them as they have a tough job, a far tougher job than the poxy ones at the football doing nothing but watching a game of football. |

maybe we could have under cover stewards in amongst the crowd , who could silently pick out the trouble makers then warn the others ? |

undercover stewards? like secret police? nah, whats needed is the big lads flexing when somebody steps out of line. no bully boy tactics, just letting it be known that no nonsense will be tolerated. some of the stewards in the dudley videos would have to swat a fly twice. no disrespect, full marks for stepping up, but if my little sister could bring them down then theyre not much use in a riot. |

just move away from the tits, give them the space they want. Ostracise them completely. I am worried that the pens stopping them getting out stop the police getting in, and we need them removed asap. The public will see the EDL acting to remove them and encouraging it to happen. As for them trying to push forward, some sort of liaison with the force to enable the 'march' to stop with the idiots being encouraged forward. Separate them out. All the 'stand and fight' rhetoric seen here will only fuel the 'thug' calls. Its a peaceful protest, and must remain so... at all costs. |

Whistles? Doesn't sound intimidating enough. How about cattle prods and tazers? |

More stewards, bigger ones if possible... = problem solved... anyone trying to start s**t gets the kick and I think that the stewards should hand them over to the police to handle people might think twice then. |
