Something a little light hearted Pubs are a huge part of English culture. We can trace them back to the Anglo-Saxon mead hall, where people drank ale or mead (mead being a fermented honey drink). I'm an ale drinker. I started off as most lads do on lager, the likes of Stella & Grolsch. My tastes changed and I started drinking ale, partly because there are so many ales, all with different flavours made in local breweries (instead of the globalist lager breweries), and also because ale is a drink our ancestors have had since year dot. My favourite ales? Banks's Mild, St Austell's Tribute, Holden's Golden Glow, Wychwood's Hobgoblin, Everard's Sunchaser, Wells Bombardier and Sharps Doom Bar.

Cider, love the proper stuff I used to get when I visited malvern or when I'm back down in sunny Devon. Only drink on weekend now and usually only 1 night, Sat or Fri. I suffer from proper Delirium tremens (DTs) which gives me paranoier and hallucinations amongst other things. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000766.htm I developed it from years of alcohol abuse in the army (as soon as I finished for the day it would be half a bottle of whiskey and 4 cans of scrummpy jack, to start with) and when you get it thats it. I'm only 29 as well. |

Mead's favorite, Lager, Guinness and Ale's ok in the summer, but i'd rather have a good single malt whiskey at weekends. I mostly drink (moderate) in the weekend, and havin a good pilsner to my dinner during some weekdays. |

Holsten Pils used to be my favourite but it was never the same since they dropped the alcohol content from 5.6 to 5.0abv. Nowadays however I drink only cans of Tyskie. A Polish lager available from my local 'offy' for £5 for 6 cans ![]() I love many beers and spirits but at the moment this really floats my boat, sometimes as an accompaniment with half a bottle of Vodka ![]() Edit: Tyskie is 5.6% and so much better at getting you to sleep than a glass of warm milk

Being a little older than most on this forum, I would have to say ale - beer, and not that flavourless sparkling water with a bit of alcohol added. Real beers are drunk not for their alcohol content but for their taste. Each real ale brewery has it's own unique recipe and the resultant beer has its own unique taste. There is a full range of different ales from the pale ales through to the winter warmers. Each needs to be savoured. How can you savour something whose only difference from the next manufacturers lager is the alcohol content. The flavour is almost always identical. And drinking isn't about getting bladdered of an evening but enjoying several pints with the lads with half decent conversations about football, sex and politics (not necessarily in that order). There really isn't much fun in puking your guts up in the street and pissing yourself. |

Oh and my favourite was an ale brewed by a publican in Newbury in the '80's. It had the useful name of 'Same-again'. (No really, it was called same-again. - saved so much time). |

I mostly agree, part from the "flavourless sparkling water!" That sounds Old!! I'm only 48, but i've learnt to use alcohol for pleasure and relaxation!
