If it's English, destroy it! is be the EU motto, judging on this latest attack on us. Channel's name to 'Le Pond' Without it there would be no British Isles, no White Cliffs of Dover and Captain Matthew Webb would never have found fame as a nifty swimmer. Yet the mighty English Channel's status could be reduced to that of a mere creek if Brussels has its way. Officials want to rename it 'the Anglo-French Pond' as part of a plan to bolster the notion of an EU superstate. More than £1million, much of it coming from the British taxpayer, is being spent drawing up a new map to be distributed to schools and bureaucrats. It defies centuries of history by wiping out current national borders to foster 'cultural identification' between regions and encourage greater integration. Under the plans, Southern England, from Cornwall to Kent, is joined with northern France and becomes known as the TransManche zone. Its capital is Paris and it has its own socialist president, Alain Le Vern. The West of Britain is parcelled off with parts of France, Spain and Portugal as part of a new Atlantic region. Eastern Britain along with Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway becomes the North Sea region. And Scotland breaks away from Britain to become part of the Northern Periphery with parts of Norway, Greenland, Iceland and Finland. The mapmakers state: 'The channel has become a zone of multiple interacting and overlapping activities. 'It is a shared space, a small Anglo-French internal sea; the interplay of activities both on and around what has become known as the Anglo-French Pond.' Eurocrats admit they are trying to undo the work of the geographer Ptolemy, who named the Channel Oceanus Britannicus in the second century AD. They declare: 'A 1,000-year period, beginning with the Norman invasion of England, now nears its end as that same island becomes physically linked to the continent of Europe.' The Tories accused the Government of backing plans to erase Britain's history. Communities spokesman Caroline Spelman said: 'Labour ministers have already sought to replace England and its shires with government office regions. 'Now British taxpayers' money is being used literally to wipe our nation off the map, erase 1,000 years of history and downgrade the English Channel to the insulting status of a pond. 'A Conservative government will scrap these Euro plans and save the English Channel.' Given the choice we know what the three main, pro-EU parties would have. They constantly discriminate against the English (how often do you even hear them use the word 'English', instead opting for 'British' or traditional communities?), they now plan to split England up into regions.![]() Read more here.. Because they are notorious for manipulating facts/quotations/statements and point blank making stuff up. If you did not know this then I pity you. They love to stir up anti-Europe/anti-immigration/anti-anything fears by twisting their sources to fit their predetermined opinion. |

That they do Alex (as do most tabloids), but the EU threat is a very real one. This below is from the Telegraph in 2008.. EU map deletes England, replaces it with regions |

Again, Alex has a fair point. This time regarding the editorial integrity of the Daily Mail. Again, he gets shouted down by name calling. This time accusing him of being a Guardianista. I happen to agree with him on the Daily Mail. I also think that the Guardian is just as bad at twisting things to suit its own agenda. Out of interest Alex, which paper do you prefer? I prefer the Telegraph or the Daily Mash (not Mail, Mash) |

I don't feel a particular attachment to anyone county. Not born in England but born to English parents, both from different counties. Raised in 2 other counties, lived most of my adult life in another. Proud to be English. I am proud of all the counties within England. I can understand why someone with a particular connection to one county would be particularly proud to associate themselves with it tho. |

Thanks for being reasonable... I don't really 'prefer' any papers. I prefer to get my news from the blogosphere where sources are cited and claims can be easily investigated. To compare the Guardian to the Daily Mail is silly though; at least the bias of the Guardian can be arrived at without much tweaking of the facts. |

I didn't say the EU is perfect. All I said was the claims in the OP should be taken with a pinch of salt due to the fact that the source is a media outlet notorious for manipulating and lying. They're just as likely to rename the English channel as they are to rename Christmas 'Winterval'. It's tabloid fearmongering. |

it may be scaremongering, and it may not happen in our lifetimes. but i believe things like this is what the e.u want to happen at some point in the future. we are softened up by a slow erosion of our laws and values. although i take all i read in the media with a pinch of salt, there is usually a grain of truth in most stories. |

I think the Daily Mail stories should be treated with a dose of salt, especially when the continually criticise EDL while printing stories from an angle coherent with EDL. My dimishing respect for the Guardian dropped even further when I realised what sort of shitheads are writing for them these days. A very clear political bias. Examples: Jason Parkinson http://jasonnparkinson.blogspot.com/2008/06/clients.html Jonathan Warren http://jwarren.co.uk/contact/ The latter was posting shit about supposed chants while the Chief Inspector said it was not true. What are people's views on The Independent? |
