Just for fun - Answer what you want to answer - dont worry about answering everything. From the "Proudly made in the North" show Nearest and Dearest to Benidorm - Whats your favorite Britcom? (1) Im sure many on this forum will echo the view that British Comedy isn't what it used to be. So to try and get a bit of variety in the answers - Pick 2 - pre and post 1990 and throw in a sketch show for measure - of course make your list of favs if you have too many to pick a few from. (2) A tougher Question - Which sitcoms do you think either represent British life well - or - Do you think stand out as something truly British which only we could do or added to the international comedy stage (3) And then as the subtitle says, what do you think about the state of British comedy? Worse? better? Just different? Ok but lacking something? Better than any other countires? (4) Sick of British comedies being copied by America? (5) Answer which ever you feel answering - of course the bracketed numbers relate to the questions asked, if you want to use them as a reference. My views 1) Yes minister - and if it counts Shameless. 2) Pre 1990 - Nearest & Dearest - The Good life - Allo Allo Post 1990 Vicar of Dibley - Ab Fab - The Office - Benidorm - Catherine Tate Show - Thin Blue Line - Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie - Extras 3) I think most British comedy new and old is uniquly us and I think the world owes us massive favor, We might not being doing good in sport but we beat the whole world when it comes to Comedy. 4) I think British comedy is suffering because of the death of the Sitcom. Benidorm/Catherine Tate/Gervais et al have all been good contributions. but they lack the charm of a sitcom, but if the sitcom is dead so is that charm. Something is missing but at the same time there's still plenty of gems. However I wouldnt blame anyone if the disagreed with that. 5) Absolutely. Whats wrong with the way we do things? If they aren;t happy they should work with us not by the idea off us. May of our shows may fare better with bigger budgets, but very few fare well when they are completly redone in and by America. It's kinda insulting to the originals which were good enough for those companies to want to rip it off in the first place - Comedy or Dramas. I have many American friends who get annoyed by it too, they love how we do things and just wish American Tv stations would just play them without them having to pay stupid amunts for an extra channel to watch our stuff. |

Royle family I thought was genuinely funny, the warmth and love they all had for each other was brilliiantly acted. As already mentioned too Early Doors had some great moments |

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack. Winston Churchill | |

It's sad but in this day and age all comdeys are PC,watching Father Ted and The Young Ones and there are some jokes which the wankers now deem as racist with the Chinese sketch in Father Ted and the Ford Tippex sketch in Boring. MIKE: So when I shuffle off to see the Saudis, what do I say? Hello, King Fahd. I've got some oil for you. In fact, I've got a sample of it all over the front of my shirt! You wouldn't happen to have a tin of Swarfega lying around the palace, your Royal Mightiness?! Wise up, Rick. He'd chop my hands off. NEIL: Shhhh! Don't say that about the Arabs, Mike. You'll get us all into terrible trouble. [In a thought bubble above Neil's head, two Arabs are talking.] ARAB #1: Your magnificence! The British Foreign Secretary has arrived to apologize for recent press criticism, in which they alleged mandatory cruelty. ARAB #2: I will see him now. ARAB #1: Which bit of him would you like to see first? |
