As some of you may know, its always been a dream of mine to join the army. I'm 16 atm, leaving school in September. Now the problem I have is, should I go college until I'm 18 and then join the army? I would like to be in the Infantry, but once I've finished my army career, I won't have any qualifications, so my chances of getting a decent job will be slim. So, should I college. Any advice will be helpful, really don't know what to do atm. Cheers guys. |

Personally mate, I would get whatever qualifications you can under your belt. You may not really be thinking about life after the Army - but time flies. I left school before all my exams - I just wasn`t interested in school - and it took me years to get where I am now. If I had exams - I could have got there 5 years earlier. |

I'm in the same boat mate but i chose to take public services and i'm currently doing my first year, once i have finished i will try and become a paratrooper. That way you get your life to sociallise and continue to do what you love to do most and 16-18 is a good age to go out and enjoy yourself ![]() More then happy to speak to you about it, just pm me your msn. |

Yeah mate I would go to college if I was you. Many former soldiers find it hard to get employment after coming out. My friend took a course in building so that when he came out he had qualifications. Do a practical course like building or plumbing and you will be greatful that you have done it when you come out. |

do it now mate. lol my mum didn't do that, so she had to go to college a couple of years ago, and she found it really difficult and stressful, and wished she'd done it when she was young and had the energy. i'm having to do my exams and stuff this year eh, but may as well get them done, get off to college/uni and get it all out the way. that's what i'm hoping lol |

you could join one of the trade regiments and gain the skills to earn your living once you leave that way. the REME and Signals are a good regiments for that. you'll still be a soldier but you will be learning skills with a practical application in civvy street. nobody needs an ex machine gunner, but if you can fix an engine, drive a class 1 HGV or set up a radio communications site then you'll never be out of work. |

Learn as much as you can boys; try to engage in ideas to start your own businesses, thus making your own way in this life. Education doesn't end at school; you never stop learning, and with the technology available today, you youngsters have a wealth of information at your finger tips.

Get your education first mate. Take some time to pick a good course - don't just make a spur of the moment decision. Plenty of time to join up afterwards. |

Go to college man. If you don't you're just going to have to compete with all the immigrant scroungers for a job. Having a college degree puts you way higher up than most of em will ever get because a lot of em aren't willing to work for it. |

I went into the RAF at 15 and demobed at 30. I was an armourer and well qualified, but only in the mob. When I came out I had little in terms of qualifications and had to go back to college to get them and believe me it was hard!! So mate my advice is get qualifided, trained and after that follow your dream. The Army will always be there and waiting for you. Best wishes. Bobby |

Really depends on what you do at college. There is plenty of time to join the army. Don't have to do it at 16. Do something sensible and productive at college that suits your interests and talents. |

I would go to college if I was you. I left secondary school and didn't go to college but I joined the Army - REME actually, and learned my trade. In those days when I left there were plenty of employers who wanted ex military people who were also trained in something so I was OK, but nowadays I think things are different and you might want to get some good qualification(s) under your belt, then you can take life a bit easier (even in the Army) ! |

If your dream's are to join the army. I would suggest that the best couse of action for you would be to get sufficiant qualifications to enable you to get a commissian as a officer.

Yh go to college first, at least then if you leave the army in the future/change your mind about joining, you can fall back on the A-Levels you will have and then maybe look at going to Uni or getting a job (good luck with the job bit, you will need it!!!!!) |

As someone who joined the infantry straight from school I would advise to not to join so early, go to college and get what you can out if it until you turn 18. You can apply whilst you're at college which I advise as it does take a while. Also being under 18 you'll only end up staying in blighty (it's called rear party) when the rest of your battalion/unit is away on duty, which is a pain in the arse as all you do is guard duty (stagging on) and all the other shite jobs. Get all the qualifications you can before you join, and if you get in get all the qualifications you can rip out the army (something I ever did out of laziness and just wanting to get pissed all the time) and even in the infantry you can get some good quals that will help you when you get out. Also don't let the pricks in the careers office talk you into joining a unit/trade you don't want to join, they usually try and get you in their unit. Whatever you do enjoy
