I did not attend today as finances are to tight but I watched things unfold during the day in the company of three others. All are over 40 and I had persuaded them that the EDL are not as the media try to portray but all three stopped looking at the images (I do not know the correct terminology) within 30 minutes. Public image is vital if the EDL are going to move forward and the people who organize it are going to have to either attract a bigger mob of footie lads and street fighters and knock seven bells out of the police and the UAF with miner style organizing and levels of violence (personally I would love that) or they will have to ditch the football supporter image altogether. I do not think there is a happy medium. The people on the stage within 1 minute were saying 'shut the f**k up',(bad public image). The people I was watching with are not moralists or prudes but it set the tone. Hooded speaker (bad public image), Sikh nice to see but the bouncing up and down and chanting?. (bad public image). Football style chanting (bad public image). The style of dress of speakers did not look good. These things might sound drippy but these are the things which they form an image of. What direction are the EDL moving in?. Who do you want to attract?. A middle aged lady was talking very coherently and explaining herself to the camera after being asked when the camera panned to a fat lump in a yellow hat who was just shouting and then chanting. He did not appear to have anything interesting to say. 'You either want people like him or her' one of the women watching said. then got up and went in the other room. People, normal or whatever word describes them will give you a chance but who do you want to attract?. Your image suits people like me but if you want to appeal to a wider audience then you have got to sort yourselves out. Your public image is not very good and Stoke has done you no favours. Choosing BNP country was not a good idea. Either be a fighting force or stop drinking, swearing (it sounds awful to people),masks, hoods etc. Police yourselves with designated stewards and like some have suggested have a theme for the demonstrations. Just meeting up having some beers and a bit of a march I am afraid you will never shake off the BNP style footie hooligan image. Sorry to sound so critical. You lot have done a fantastic job you really have, but either be a more organized extremely violent army style outfit or be a more organized very peaceful self policing organization that will appeal to mums, dads and the public in general. Zcott and Zeferis have some sensible ideas and you need to hang on to the baldymonster types to police it properly. |

liked your comments and i agree with what your saying concerning image ..image is all important these days especially for EDL ..A major rethink is needed by the leadership.. When i first found out about EDL I thought it was just another BNP clone. Nazi salutes, skinheads etc. But it isnt im glad to say.. Today was a turning point for EDL either they change or they will simply become a group of lads n lasses out looking for a fight..This would be wasting a golden oppertunity as the public is crying out for a group like the EDL who is willing to stand up to extremism.. I just hope you can persuade your friends to take another look at EDL maybe a look at some of the posts on here will help to persuade them..anyhow good luck NO compromise NO surrender |

This is a good thread and the sentiments of the OP have been expressed and shot down on this forum for some time now. It seems the sensible ideas are shot down in flames by the ones who vote, "Yes, let's get bladdered" in the alcohol at demos threads. If you type the word "image" into the search on this site, you'll no doubt see a continuous theme (20 plus pages of results, all talking about EDL's bad image). It's not hard to see that the EDL image problem is going to be the end of us. This thread sums it up well. If we're to appeal to the everyday mums and dads of this nation then we need to ditch the stupid hooliganism. It's that simple. Reject change and you're wecloming decay. Who wants to appeal to a wider audience? The EDL is about putting lads on the street to oppose radical islam, dont forget that. If its a political vehice you want, join UKIP, simple as. I would much rather stand with 50 lads, then a 1000 of some of the nightshift normans that have been turning up lately who just dont get what the edl is and who made it what it is in the early demos. Also admin, who deleted the thread where BALDYMONSTER advocating grassing on EDL members? |

All very well said and great working model in principal, but what you are dealing with are 3000 odd angry young men, many connected to football but nearly all from working class roots who are unable to suddenly reinvent themselves as choir boys. The rise of Islam in the UK and the effect it has had on many communities, housing estates and even whole cities has not been positive for the former incumbants of these towns. Race attacks against non muslims young girls being drugged and raped are rife in the muslim suburbs and those that have to witness this on a daily basis have rightly attached themselves to the EDL because they know more than most what the dangers Islamifaction poses to the UK. The type of audiance the OP wants to reach out to is more likely going to be outraged at the WB but because they have very little impact with Islam are not going to be drawn to the EDL until the point their church or house is attacked by the Islamists, which will happen in the next 5 years but until then they will support the movement in essence but not be active. I do like the point of presentation and delivery of speeches, the speeches are delivered with passion but the professional execution is not quite there yet, outsiders who listen to a speech should be inspired by it's message. Early days yet EDL has come along way but now needs to carefully consider what it's next target is. |

Not sure who deleted it - could be any mod or admin. Someone may come back and answer that for you when they are online. |

Just type "image" into a site search. There are over 20 pages of threads where people are talking about the bad image. There's no point talking on this forum about change, there's too much mixed opinion. Change needs to come from the EDL leadership. The need to instill some changes, otherwise the EDL are doomed to failure. I don't even want to think about that. |

THE SPEECHES AT STOKE. The two guys on stage were obviously a bit nervous about giving a speech and they seemed a bit jittery on their feet. Plus they looked a bit clumsy when they were trying to turn over the pages of their speech. What I would suggest next time is to use a podium. To give them a bit of confidence and some where to put their speeches on and a glass of water, it also looks more professional. Not slagging the guys off just a bit of constructive criticism |
