What constitutes a definition of fascism and fascist governments is a highly disputed subject that has proved complicated and contentious. Historians, political scientists, and other scholars have engaged in long and furious debates concerning the exact nature of fascism and its core tenets.

Most scholars agree that a "fascist regime" is foremost an authoritarian form of government, although not all authoritarian regimes are fascist. Authoritarianism is thus a defining characteristic, but most scholars will say that more distinguishing traits are needed to make an authoritarian regime fascist.

Similarly, fascism as an ideology is also hard to define. Originally, "fascism" referred to a political movement that existed in a single country (Italy) for less than 30 years and ruled the country from 1922 to 1943 under the leadership of Benito Mussolini. Clearly, if the definition is restricted to the original Italian Fascism, then "fascism" has little significance outside of Italian politics. Most scholars prefer to use the word "fascism" in a more general sense, to refer to an ideology (or group of ideologies) that was influential in many countries at many different times. For this purpose, they have sought to identify a "fascist minimum" - that is, the minimum conditions that a certain political group must meet in order to be considered fascist. Several scholars have inspected the apocalyptic, millennial and millenarian aspects of fascism.According to most scholars of fascism, there are both left and right influences on fascism as a social movement, and fascism, especially once in power, has historically attacked communism, conservatism and parliamentary liberalism, attracting support primarily from the "far right" or "extreme right."

The dictionary definition of Fascism doesn't help us much as it associates the word only with the particular eruption of this phenomenon in Europe in the 20th Century. But the fascisti of Mussolini's Italy and the Nazis of Hitler's Germany were manifesting a phenomenon that dates from the first attempts of human beings to figure out their place in the world. The primitive impulse that gives rise to fascism is what happens when a group distinguishes itself from others and then asserts its dominance over them. When this assertion has evolved into a full-blown ideology based on tribal identity, it has evolved into fascism. Fascism is group ego writ large.

I thought they were shouting, "Fat Chest!". That's why we were singing, "Get your tit's out for the lads!". :D

An organisation that tries to seize authority over a nation by violent means.

A disciplined group that credits little value to the life of people outside of the organisation.

An organisation that advocates the destruction of liberal democracy for a totalitarian dictatorship.

An organisation that brutally suppresses opposition and is therefore beyond criticism.

An organisation that has a uniform and brutally punishes those that stray from the organisations rules.

Wait a minute, does this sound familiar to you too?

The original Italian fascism was also oblivious to religion as many top posts were held by Jews until Hitler told Mussolini that this wasn't on - in his opinion.

I think fascism is unique in regarding the individual a vessel and the nation or state a goal, rather than the other way around.

i could go on and on and on. these people are facists of the worst kind. they intend to keep us afraid and scared so they can impose more and more legislation upon us with the excuse that it's needed for our own good. be afraid, be very afraid. now this bunch have sold us to the e.u we can expect to become just another e.u state. scotland ireland and wales are recognised as seperate countries but england isnt even on the e.u. map. facism has arrived. and dont argue because you too can disappear. and you will when the secret police come knocking in the name of terrorism. we are the terrorists the government despise. they cow tow to the muslims and pay their protection money so we are in no danger from them yet. but when they stop paying the enemy stop praying and its war. i hope you are all ready cos its comin. bosnia all over again.

labour and tories, they have un-elected ministers who make decisions on our behalve and no matter what the majority think, what they say goes, thats fascism to me. Europe, going to war, immigration, CCTV everywhere, spy cameras on your bins, mobile vehicles with cameras filming where you park, the list is endless, endless new laws, forcing you to use bank accounts or you cant be paid its a creeping sort of fascism which is the worst cos most people accept it as the norm, but think back to even just 20 years ago things werent as s**t as they are now and we didnt have our lifes as controlled as much as they are now.
