Know your Protest Rights

Know your rights

OK, you want to protest peacefully for a cause you feel just.

If you want minimum hassle from the authorities, know your rights.

Here they are:

You are allowed to statically protest without permission. You are not allowed to march.

You WILL be searched under section 44 of the terrorism act. You do NOT have to:

Give a name, address, date of birth. When asked your racial background, say Eskimo. It messes up their systems.

Carry no ID at all. No cashpoint cards, no driving licence, nothing at all.

Get yourself a “protest SIM card” and only use it in your mobile when you are protesting. The Police have the right to see all mobile phones, so use a cheap throwaway mobile. Do not take your normal phone with all your photos, mates and txt’s on it.

You CAN wear a mask. Only a senior officer can ask you to remove it IF he can show you a signed Section 61 application. If they start, tell them you are a Muslim female and your religion forbids the removal of your “Niqab”.

If you do get arrested, say nothing. Nothing at all. They may take your DNA and fingerprints, but they will have no idea who they belong to unless you tell them. Likewise a photo. You WILL be released even if you say absolutely nothing. It just takes a bit longer.

Never, ever sign anything they give you. Get a complaint in quick. Anything. You were assaulted, the arresting officer called you a gay. Anything that tells them you are going to create masses of paperwork will see you out of the door, uncharged.

The Police are not your friends. They are looking to hit quotas and will happily add you to that quota if you let them. So don’t.

Stay peaceful, make friendly eye contact with the Police (it’s always harder to arrest a smiling happy person than a spitting, angry one) and KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

yeah all well and good and some great information for the majority of the people on here!

Only 1 thing if they take my fingerprints and DNA they will know who i'am and have my details straight away. This will be the problem for anyone who has had their details taken by the police for previous convictions or cautions!

Price we pay for f**king around when we were young it wont deter me!

I always protest wearing a mask

My daughter wears a Niqab.

When the Police say "remove your mask", I say "me or her. I dare you"

You can buy Niqabs on Ebay for £6.99

Remember, the press will be out in force. Buy them a drink, smile lots, shake their hands and be friendly.

If Ghandi, Mandela and Luther King and the East Germans can f**k the govenment peacefully, so can we.

I'm not too sure about your choice of protesters old holborn. Luther and ghandi were murdered and mandella spent 20 odd years banged up! :) I'm going for the horsey option, make it a racing thoroughbred. Catch me now ya fickers! :)

In Brum, a couple of lads were told to remove scarves from the lower part of their faces, and refused. The copper moved it himself to video them! Love the comments especially the horses one! :)

I will nOT wear a mask, got nothing to hide. I think if you are going to do it-wear the Burkhas/Niquabs even if only for humerous purposes.

Wearing a Niqab would be seen as piss-taking and thus 'incitement to hatred'. Doesn't mean I don't think it's a great idea.

With the new version of swine flu on its way, what about the health masks bought in your local chemist for £2 ? At least you can say to the police that you actually have swine flu and you have been told not to spread it.

Does that mean our own details?
Or some fabricated ones? ;)

I'm liking that swine flu one of mj's. perfectly legitimate reason for covering up and the police would be too s**t scared to tell you to remove it. I'll cough all over them. They wear balaclavas anyway.

I know not to bring your proper phone but have a phone that can record video.
Police have learned a lesson now the c**ts.

By filming the Police it makes them less likely to take the piss.

I reckon we should all go bouncing through town on pogo sticks with church bells hanging from each handle and dressed as taliban.
Imagine the UAF trying to chant 'NAZI NAZI' while trying to pretend they don't feel like pissing themselves laughing.

Just to point out a few inaccuraces in your report...

Saying your ethnicity is Eskimo won't screw up their systems as they have a 'box' for other ethnicity.

It is a myth that a senior officers has to show you a signed section 61 for you to remove your mask, all they have to do is inform you that a section 61 is in place. You can then request to see a copy after the event.
You will be arrested if you don't remove it on ANY police officers request.

Myth number two, a Niqab is a voluntary piece of religeous headwear. It states nowhere in the Quran that it is compulsary, it is personal choice. If it was compulsory for all female muslims to wear it it would be a breach of human rights in the UK.

The police can legally hold you for up to 24 hours to identify who you are, my advice is give your details and you'll be out alot quicker, they'll find out who you are eventually so might as well get it over with quickly!
They can take your fingerprints and DNA by force is necessary.

The big Myth is that police have quotas... I know this as my best mate is a copper.. they have no quotas, well not in West Yorks anyway. All officers get pain the same, no bonuses for extra arrests, tickets etc... Don't beleive the press. They won't WANT to arrest you as they's rather be on the streets dealing with proper criminals, so be polite and you'll gain their respect.

The police are more than likely your friends and agree with your protest but cannot be their for obvious reasons so don't think they are all facsist bastards!

KNOW YOUR REAL RIGHTS!

Other then the fact that the protest you are involved in is legal, don’t worry about knowing your protest rights as mentioned on this topic, unless you have verified it, understood it completely, have a full grasp of how to use it, and have your lawyer standing next to you.

I knew my rights as well in my younger days, but that didn’t stop the old bill giving me a kicking. But learning to keep my mouth shut, or being creatively compliant at the right time did. And most of the time that kept them and me happy.

You will get idiot police officers and idiot EDL supporters, don’t react or get dragged into something you can’t handle. The police are doing their job we are doing ours. Keep to the plan, don’t take it personal.

A policeman asks you something you can’t avoid, then answer him creatively, gage the situation and workout what you can get away with and what you can’t. Don’t enter into a pissing match that’s going to end up in court, because you won’t have a leg to stand on, regardless of advice you get from the barristers and eminent lawyers in this post. Keep the ego in check, fight for the cause, let the UAF wind the old bill up and end up in court.

The other thing I would say is, that we should document what the police ask and tell us to do, so that those in charge of the demonstrations can consult lawyers, who can then give us a clear understanding of the appropriate response(s) we can all take to such incidences that are consistent with the current law on such matters. Because (a) It’s up-to-date advice given by people who know what they are talking about. (b) Most of us should be able respond in the same way.

So common sense and professional advice is the best defence, bin everything else.
