So lets start laying out the groundwork for this league. Here are a few questions to start with.

1. Roster positions
2. Roster Size
3. Stat Categories
4. Type of League (H2H or Roto)
5. Minor league system size
6. Minor league qualifications
7. Fairness Committee or no Fairness Committee (The committee is something that I have worked into other leagues where you choose a sample size of members to be committee members and they determine if trades are fair or not. We can also decide what role they should play in deciding fairness. i.e. Are they there only to make sure that there is no collusion or are they there to protect GM's from making lopsided trades.)

This is a good start and I am sure that there will be more things to discuss.

I know it’s nice to have a democracy on rules and way the league should be run... but to be honest when you leave rules up to 18 different people, there will be differences of opinions and nothing will get solved. Also starting polls/voting on a ton of different topics is also quite time consuming.

I’m not trying to be negative by all means, just pointing out the facts.

I will however voice my opinion on your topics above

1)2 C 2 LW 2 RW 4 D 2 G 5Bench 2 IR 18 teams x 17 per roster = 301 NHL players + 5 man Farm = 90 players total of 391 players being drafted
2)17 + 5 farm
3) G,A, PIM,PPP,SOG, +/- W, GAA, SV%, Shut Outs
4) H2H
5) 5 + 17 NHL roster = 22 rounds of drafting, ie even number
6) age and game limit, 24 years or younger and less then 100 games
7) Commish and a Co-Commish

Also doing draft through email with 8hr time limit would not work, I would recommend coming up with a schedule time frame

With 8hrs you have min 3 picks per day. With 391 (17 team 5 man roster) players needed to be drafted you need 130 days to completed the draft. Yes I know some picks will go faster but some will go slower so I would use the min to calculate the draft time.

I was thinking the same thing about too many people may have too many different rules. But the settings that you have posted is exactly what I was thinking for this league. The only exception is the Commish/Co-Commish route. I like the commish co-commish deal with a fairness committe of say 5 active members. The fairness committee will rule on trades and anything else that would be needed to preserve fairness.

As for the draft. We will do the draft through this message board and there will be a time limit. 8 hours sounds fair but I think that there should be leeway for some instances. One example would be if someone picks at 11pm, the next person would only have until 7 the next morning but I know most of the time I dont even get on until 8 at the earliest.

First .. thanks for getting this league together ...

Secondly here are my thoughts on your questions / issues

1) 2 C 2 LW 2 RW 4 D 2 G 5 Bench 2 IR based on Yahoo positions
2) Roster size of 17
3) G, A, PIM, PPP, SOG, +/- W, SV%, Shut Outs
4) ROTO
5) 5 farm / minor league
6) game limit, less then 100 games at beginning of the season
7) Commish and a Co-Commish. Fairness committee rules on collusion complaints, not stupidity or carelessness

As well, I like keeper leagues, so in addition to the farm / minor leagues, there would be 7 keepers.

I agree that democracy is great, but may not make sense when discussing rules for a new league ... perhaps we need a Rules Committee to work out the details (dates etc...) once the overall parameters are agreed to?

Alright I think a rules committee works well. Narayan and Saskpool do you want to head this committee? Your ideas appear to be pretty close. Maybe we could have 1 more person for a tie breaker. After you guys come up with the rules base we can have the rest of the GM's voice any concerns. If it is a legit concern, that more than one person has, then we will do a league vote. I know this can take some time but we can give a cut off date for people to vote.

Hi guys

Here are my suggestions of what I would like to see.

1. 2 C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 2G 5 Bench 2 IR based on yahoo positions
2. Roster size 17 excluding prospects
3. 1 point for each of G, A, PPG, SHG, GWG, ie a powerplay goal scored which is the eventual game winner would be worth 3 points., 0.2 points +/-, 0.1 Per penalty minute, 2 points for win, 1 point for Shoot out or overtime loss, 1 point for a shut out
4. H2H
5. minor league unlimited, however can only be choosen by draft picks
6. Must be under 25 and have played less than 100 games.
7. I like the committee idea, willing to volunter if needed, however I hope we don't need it, minimal interference if neccessary.

Also I would like to say I like the idea of drafting by posting to the message board, the thing is when you have a draft set for one day, not everyone is going to be able to make it, thats just the way it is, 18 peoples schedules is a lot to coordinate. So I would suggest drafting to the board for as long as possible, then possibly mid September if we are still picking (god forbid), then set up a draft night to pick the remaining players. I think that active players and prospects should be picked in seperate drafts. They can even be going on at the same time as long as we have the criteria for prospects in place.

Thats just my two cents.

Here you go... Only need to decide if you want ROTO or H2H

Team Name: Every team must have a NHL Team name, no exceptions. I find this way easier to remember who’s who when team names are used… i.e. Canucks, Maple Leafs, Capitals, and Rangers

Roster Size: 22
Roster Positions: 2 C, 2 RW, 2 LW, 4 D, 2 G, 5 Bench 2 IR
Farm: 5
Line up Changes: Daily
Waiver Time: 2 Days

Statistical Categories (Forwards/Defensemen):
Goals, Assists, Plus/Minus, Penalty Minutes, Power play Points, Shots on Goal,

Statistical Categories (Goalies):
Wins, Goals against Average, Save Percentage, Shut Outs

Roster Protection (keepers): 10 Active Players. Players don't need to be protected if they are under 24 years old and played less than 100 regular season games.

Roster Protection will be implemented 48 hours after the final pick of the Prospect Draft. This Roster Protection deadline will determine the players available in the Waiver Draft. No Free Agents can be signed from the end of the Playoffs until the midnight deadline after the Waiver Draft. When a team is eliminated from the Playoffs their transactions will be frozen.

Farm Eligibility: Players that are under 24 years old and played in less than 100 NHL games by the beginning of the season.

Farm and Draft Pick Trades: Both GMs must email me the confirmed trade when draft picks and farm players are included during the season. We will use the Yahoo Trading system during the season for all Active Players. In the off-season, both GMs must email me to confirm a trade for Active Players, Farm Players and Draft Picks. Only Draft Picks from the 2 upcoming drafts can be traded and only your top 3 drafts picks may be traded.

Farm Player Transactions: Farm players can be moved to the active roster and back to the farm at any time during the season. When a farm player moves to the active roster, the GM will have to drop another player from the active roster, in accordance with normal Yahoo free agent rules. Any available player eligible for the farm can replace the farm player that is moved to the active roster. An eligible farm player can always be placed on the farm team during the season. When placed on the farm, another farm player must be dropped unless there is an available spot. Farm players can only be on the starting roster if they are playing in the NHL. If a farm player is on your starting roster and is sent down to the minors in the real NHL, you must drop the player and sign another or send that player down to the farm. Farm players have to clear waivers in the Yahoo system before they can be signed as a free agent to be placed on the farm. When adding/dropping farm players please post it on the yahoo msg board so no one will pick up your add/drop.

Farm Rosters must be reduced to 6 players within 48 hours after the last pick of the Prospect Draft. Farm Players can only be added to a team in the off-season during the Prospect Draft, by draft pick, and after the Waiver Draft, as a free agent signing. A Farm Player can be signed, in the off-season, as a free agent starting at 12AM ET after the last pick of the Waiver Draft.

Protected Farm Player Free Agents: In accordance with the above rule, some farm players that are protected will be available as free agents in the Yahoo Pool of Players. No GM will be able to sign another GM's farm player as a free agent. When in doubt, refer to the Yahoo Group page to confirm if another GM has the rights to the player.

Draft Types: Prospect draft shortly after the real NHL Draft. Waiver Draft will begin in September

Draft Order: The Prospect Draft order is the reverse order of the standings from the regular season with one exception. The 11th place team will pick 1st overall and the 12th place team will pick 2nd overall. This is implemented to keep the 11th and 12th team battling it out till the end of the season instead of “tanking” it.
The Waiver Draft order is the standings at the end of the playoffs, the team that wins the League gets the 1st pick in the Waiver Draft.

Draft Rules: The Waiver draft will be a snake draft with the 12th place team picking back to back.
The Prospect draft will be a non snake draft with the 11th place team picking 1st overall in each round of the draft.

Each GM will have 24 hours to make their selection or the Commissioner will make the selection for that GM.

Team Competition: Every team must activate their most competitive roster throughout the season. Purposely losing for a better draft pick will not be tolerated and could cause you to lose your 1st round waiver pick. Each team must have each roster position filled throughout the season and must actively rotate these players into the starting roster when possible. All teams are required to only have players in the Yahoo System on their roster, be certain that a farm player will start in the NHL before moving them to your starting roster.

Cycling Players: Excessive cycling will not be accepted… I will give warnings if I see this happening

Prizes: First place received 1st overall in the waiver draft and able to keep one extra “keeper”

TOP GM of the YEAR: Voted by the members the top GM of the year will be able to keep one extra “keeper” for the year (you aren’t allowed to vote for yourself). Example: each team currently keeps up to 10 players; the top GM will be able to protect 11 players.

Prizes: First place received 1st overall in the waiver draft and able to keep one extra “keeper”

For the draft rules stated above... they dont take into effect till we get through the first year.

I would do 2 drafts, a prospect draft and a dispersal draft.

Prospect draft would be players eligible from this DRAFT YEAR ONLY (ie. Stamkos, Filatov, Doughty etc) I would do 2 rounds for this.

Dispersal draft is everyone else I.E. 20 rounds (17 team + 3 farm)

I would do the draft on the forums... although its going to take a long time... If you set a schedule ahead of time people know the exact date and time window they have to pick at.

I have attached the schedule I am using for my other league. It will let you get through 6-7 picks a day (trust me its alot).

let me know what you think.

Id like to start by seconding the thankyou for starting this league.Reading the messages so far I like the ideas Saskpool has & would like to add for your consideration hits & blocked shots there by raising the defencemans value (there is lots of them) & lowering the goalies (there is only so many GOOD ones ) . I don't know about you but i get tired of chasing a team that has soso players & a hot goalie with 4 catagories .I feel the wind rising THERE SHOULD BE A DRAFT SOOOOOON

Take out Shut Outs since its not a stat you can count on

Block shots and hits are hard to track and the NHL doesnt do a very good on it...

Maybe add GWG to the offense catergory

I agree about the draft... I would start it in the next few weeks.
