How the Mighty Have Fallen By Dustin Brampton (Introduction) I used to be the kind of person, parents could be proud of. I had straight A’s, I did everything my parents could ask. I loved this about me, I thought nothing could change. I was wrong, I did change, and while I still managed to get good grades, I was damaged, mentally, and physically. I let myself go, I ate and I ate and I sat on the couch, and watched television. Why did this happen you ask? Because of my ability, that I discovered I had when I was a sophomore in high school. Sure you could say that’s not an excuse, but you have no idea what I went through Edited by dman_dustin, Jan 20 2008, 01:34 AM.

Chapter One Concussion Dustin quickly got up seconds before his alarm clock went off. He smiled and turned it off. He headed to his bathroom and he took a shower. When he returned to his room he made his bed and went into the dining room. “Hey brainiac,” Dustin’s older sister mocked when he entered the room. “Silence Paula,” Dustin whispered. “Okay enough you two, Dustin do you have your homework done?” Dustin’s mother asked making breakfast. “Of course Mom,” Dustin said, Dustin’s father walked in on his laptop, typing away. “George do you have to it here at the breakfast table?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Sorry Sybil, if I don’t get this presentation, I could lose my job.” Dustin’s dad said typing away. “Shouldn’t you have had that done a long time ago?” Dustin’s mother asked. “Yes it’s complete I’m just crossing my T’s and dotting my I’s. So Dustin you have a big test coming up don’t you.” “I hardly call dodge ball a test,” Paula said smirking. “Come now Paula, without exercise we’d be watching T.V. all day and getting fat,” Dustin’s father said typing away. A large honking noise blared outside. “Oh shoot, sorry kids, that sounds like the bus,” Dustin’s mother said. Dustin got up and looked outside. “Ahh its Aunt Marge and she’s brought the RV” Dustin said screaming. Dustin’s dad audibly spit out his coffee on the laptop. “Son of a Bitch!” Dustin’s dad yelled wiping the coffee of the laptop. “George!” Dustin’s mom said. “Oh sorry, of all the days, my sister had to visit,” Dustin’s dad mumbled still wiping the coffee off. “Thank God, the coffee didn’t ruin the laptop.” “Hello ya guys, it’s me Margie, why don’t you open the door?” A woman’s voice. “Ugh, Dustin let your Aunt in,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin opened the door and cringed. Aunt Marge was standing there, in dirty clothes, smiling wildly. “Howdy Dustin, how you been doing?” Aunt Marge asked. “I’ve been doing fine, hey Marge, Paula said she wanted a big hug from you,” Dustin whispered. “Mighty Fine,” Marge said walking into the kitchen. “Howdy Y’all” “Marge what a unpleasant sight, I uh mean, how nice it is to see you,” Dustin’s mom said. “Nice to see you to Sybil, George,” Marge said. Marge looked at Paula and smiled, “And Paula.” Paula’s eyes widened when Marge approached her and when Marge hugged her, Dustin snickered. Another honk outside signified it was the bus. “Well I got to go,” Dustin said grabbing his backpack and headed outside. Dustin sat down in an empty seat, and a mad Paula walked onto the bus. She walked up to Dustin and pinched his arm. “Thanks a lot Bird Brain,” Paula said angrily walking to the back of the bus. “I’m so glad she’s graduating this year,” Dustin said rubbing his arm. “Alright Class, this is dodge ball, the longer you survive the better your grade, you will start with a C and if you last a long time your grade will increase. If you last two minutes you will get a B, if you last four minutes you will get an A,” Dustin’s gym teacher said as she walked off the field. Dustin was enjoying himself, and he lost track of time. He got five people out and he was enjoying it. Dustin threw a ball at a kid and he got out. When Dustin turned around to hit another kid, a soccer ball quickly hit him in the head and hard, and he fell to the floor. Dustin’s gym teacher blew her whistle and everyone stopped. A few kids approached him and Dustin looked and they were blurry and very close to him. He saw their noses get bigger and smaller and Dustin passed out. “Dustin, wake up, Dustin,” a calm soothing voice said. Dustin opened his eyes and jumped up. “I can’t see,” Dustin said nervously. “Calm down, Dustin you have a concussion,” the voice told him. “Who are you?” “I’m Cindy the new school nurse.” “Everything is so blurry; my eyes aren’t adjusting very well.” “Hmm, well I’m hoping that’s because of the concussion, I suggest you stay at home for a few days and if there is no improvement, go and see the optometrist.” “Am I leaving soon?” Dustin asked rubbing his eyes. “Yes I called your mother and she said your Aunt would be picking you up,” Nurse Cindy said. “Are you okay, Dustin?” Paula asked as she apparently entered the room. “Besides not being able to see, I’m just peachy,” Dustin said sarcastically. “You can’t see, really?” Paula asked suspiciously. “Hey Dustin, Paula, how y’all doing?” A dreaded voice asked. “Um, hey Marge, I have to get back to class,” Paula said quickly. “Coward,” Dustin whispered. “Ooh Dustin, that soccer ball done and hit you hard,” Paula said. “So how’s he doing Nurse?” “Dustin has a concussion and his vision is impaired and I suggest he stay at home for a few days to rest. If his vision doesn’t improve take him to an optometrist.” “Well shoot, Dustin let’s get going, we have to get you home,” Marge said. Dustin got up and walked towards Marge’s silhouette. Dustin quickly looked back at Nurse Cindy and for a brief second saw her clearly. She was beautiful and gorgeous. Dustin moaned for a second, but Dustin’s vision blurred again. “Dustin!” Marge yelled. He looked back and Marge guided him to her RV. Edited by dman_dustin, Jan 20 2008, 02:57 AM.

Okay...Okay I just thought the beginning sounded like this: I woke up. Turned off alarm. Got out of bed. Took shower. Came back and made bed. Walked to kitchen. Flirted with my sister uh I mean my sister's friend. I just meant I wanted to add more detail to the sentences or add detail to the story. |

Yes because, sooner or later not everyone on here will be from HU, so you need to post the origins here, so we know what's going on for the main storyline, this really isn't HU, it's completely fresh, so treat it like a new home, just need to put everything away. But if you mean do you have to rewrite them so they're different than the ones from HU? Well not completely, I'd at least like you to change the end to January 1st 2007 and maybe reference the eclipse in some way, but your main story in your origins, can remain completely untouched. That's only if you decide to make your HU character, your Dustin's Mansion character. Brand New Character= Brand New Origins. But if you have problems with this, just tell me, and I'll try and fix it. |

Chapter Two Accidents and Mysteries Part One Dustin sighed and rolled over and stared at what appeared to be the wall. He heard some footsteps and sighed again. “How are you feeling?” Dustin’s mom asked as she entered the room. “It’s been a few days, and I still can’t see,” Dustin said. “I mean how does a soccer ball make me lose my vision?” “Well concussions do cause blurred vision, like the nurse said; we have an appointment with the optometrist tomorrow.” Dustin rolled over and sighed. Dustin saw Cindy, sitting in a chair chewing something. Dustin smiled and drifted into sleep. Dustin woke up and his vision seemed normal, he saw that it was day outside so he walked to the kitchen. His stomach growled, and he opened the refrigerator and grabbed some lunch meat. He made a sandwich and ate it. As he did, his eyes blurred again, and everything got dark. “Dustin, is that you?” a voice asked. “Paula?” Dustin asked. “Yes, what are you doing?” Paula said. “I was getting a snack,” Dustin said. “At two in the morning?” Paula said. Dustin sat down in shock. “But that’s impossible; a few seconds ago it was light outside. My vision temporarily returned but then it got blurry again.” “Well whatever, there’s school tomorrow and I have class so see you later brainiac.” “What are you doing up this late?” Dustin asked suddenly. “If you must know I heard a noise and came in here, well I’m going back to bed.” Dustin stared in disbelief that it was so early yet it looked bright outside a few moments ago. Dustin finished his sandwich and carefully walked back to his room. He sighed and crawled into bed. He closed his eyes and fell asleep. Dustin woke up to screaming and jumped out of bed and hit his head on something. Suddenly he heard laughing. “Paula Lori Brampton, do not do that again,” Dustin’s mom said. “What? You told me to wake up Dustin,” Paula replied amused. “Careful Paula, don’t want to be grounded, do you?” Dustin asked getting up. “Paula, just get ready for school,” Dustin’s mom said. “What time is it?” Dustin asked. “It’s seven in the morning, we have your appointment, in a few hours so get ready,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin grabbed his clothes and took a shower. “So how’s your vision?” Dustin’s mom asked when he walked in the living room. “Still blurry as heck but last night, it seemed okay, for a few moments.” “Hmm, well I’m sure the optometrist will have some opinions,” Dustin’s mom said. “That’s impossible,” The optometrist said. “What do you mean?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Well okay maybe I was being a little rash but from my thirty years of optometry, I have never come across such a case where, the vision comes and goes so constantly.” “That’s not all, I’ve been having these weird effects as well, last night at two in the morning and it looked like it was completely daylight outside.” “Dustin!” Dustin’s mom said instantly. “No, no, it’s all right, I’m sure you were just confused, well your vision is well I can’t tell, so Mrs. Brampton if you don’t mind, I’m going to run some tests, so I can find his baseline vision so I can prescribe him some temporary glasses.” “Okay well I’ll leave you two alone,” Dustin’s mom said as she walked out of the room. “Okay Dustin, this first test is rather experimental; it was designed by the Sanders Electric Company. It examines your eye and whatever you see is recorded so I can see what’s wrong.” “Is it safe?” Dustin asked. “It’s very safe, in fact it doesn’t hurt at all,” the optometrist said. The optometrist put something on Dustin’s head and a large noise began to click. “Hmm, well I can see what you mean, you can’t see very well,” The optometrist said. ‘I wish I could see,” Dustin thought to himself. Suddenly Dustin’s vision went completely black and it flashed white a few times and then orange, blue, red, and black shapes appeared. “My God, that’s thermal vision,” the optometrist said confused. Dustin’s vision then blurred and the optometrist didn’t say anything. “Uh Doctor,” Dustin began. “Well I’m flabbergasted, I mean normal human vision doesn’t show up in thermal.” “That’s funny my vision was blurred the whole time, I guess your machine was broken,” Dustin lied quickly. “Are you sure?” The optometrist asked, “Yep,” Dustin said. The optometrist then took the thing off of Dustin’s head and then preceded to run normal tests. “So Doctor, how’s Dustin?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Well I believe his brain is interfering with its ability to interpret images. A symptom of concussion. Once Dustin’s concussion heals his eyes should return to normal. In the meantime I have a prescription for Dustin; just in case his vision persists being blurry even after his concussion heals.” As Dustin and his mom were leaving he heard the optometrist pick up a phone and after a few seconds heard a few words. “Ms. Toad, I’d like a few words with you.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry for the delay, but here it is chapter two Edited by dman_dustin, Feb 21 2008, 09:19 AM.

I am in the middle of a Writer's block (kind of), so I'm writing about something else, a Pokemon fan-fic (well with my own characters). I kind of set it using Advanced Mirror Vision aka (Dustin Brampton or in the story Dustin B) but that kind of ruins the overall story, so I'm omitting it most of that. I'm not sure if I will post it, since most of you probably could care less about Pokemon. But if you want me to, go ahead and tell me. Chances are I'll put the story in the other Fan-fic forum rather than the Dimensional Portal forum. Anyway so that's why you probably wont see anything for Dustin Brampton. But if more peole start posting I might change that and continue writing. That is all Dustin |

So his power is thermal vision? Why didn't he see the body heat from all the people and stuff? Is the thermal vision on and off? What's the deal? |

Actually his ability is more complex than that. It's more than thermal vision. I call it Mirror Vision, it's one of my own created abilities. In essence it's the ability to see how you want, where you want, and when you want (past and present only). There of course is a limit to how far in the past he can see, though. And it's kind of impossible (based on the ability itself) to see the future. I called it Mirror Vision for one simple reason, when you place mirrors in a specific order you can basically see things out of your field of vision. And looking in a mirror you see what you look like. But Mirror Vision is only part of his core ability (which also include Mirror Palm Vision, and Advance Mirror Vision). It's sort of like a video game where when you level up your ability it can upgrade. Right now Dustin Brampton is only working on the Mirror Vision part, and he's too unskilled to worry about "upgrades" right now. A bit more specific (to get a better understanding) is he can see by thermal vision, night vision (which is actually not the night vision you know but basically seeing things as if there was light instead of dark). He can spy on people, he could be a great detective if he wants. It is basically the ultimate spying ability. The only downside is he can only see things, he can't hear them which is a big weakness. And yes it is an on and off sort of deal. Hope I explained it better. |

I have few chapters done so I might be able to post something tomorrow. Just to give you a small overview. The next chapter will be the second part of the previous chapter (accidents and mysteries). Then there will be a flashback chapter (mostly for character development). The next two chapters after that will be very important (for much later in the origins). And remember certain people's names, so if someone mentions somebody and you can't remember who that is, it's possible I mentioned them in another chapter. That's all I have so far. There may be fifteen or more chapters in my origin story so, I better get to work. |

Accidents and Mysteries Part 2 “That optometrist freaked me out,” Dustin told his mom as they were on their way home. “Dustin!” Dustin’s mom said laughing. Dustin stared out the window and sighed. Suddenly his eyes became clear, and he saw a tree, and it slowly came closer, when suddenly he saw himself he jumped. “Dustin, what’s wrong?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Nothing, just bored,” Dustin said with his vision blurred. When Dustin got home he went straight to his room and laid on his bed. “Thermal Vision? You know ever since I got hit with that soccer ball, my vision has been different somehow.” Dustin concentrated on making his vision better. Slowly his vision returned to normal and he sighed with relief. “I suppose I better be quiet about it or else the government will want to experiment on me. Tomorrow is Saturday so I guess I’ll see what I can do then.” The next day Dustin began to smile. The weather was horrible, as it was cloudy and rainy. Dustin walked into the kitchen and walked into Paula. “Damn weather,” Paula said. “Now I can’t go out.” “Careful Paula don’t want mom or dad to hear you,” Dustin said causing Paula to glare at him. “Shut up brainiac,” Paula said. “ I might as well sleep all day.” Paula started to walk away. “Where is, Mom and Dad?” Dustin asked. “They both went to the store to get food for brunch. By the way Aunt Marge went home,” Paula said. She then walked up to Dustin and smiled. “Yes?” Dustin asked. “It would be wise of you to leave me alone,” Paula said. “Or you’ll regret it.” Paula rubbed Dustin’s hair and walked away. “She’s certainly moody today,” Dustin said sighing. Dustin took a glass of water and headed to his room. He set it aside and pulled out some text books. “Might as well do my homework,” Dustin said. A couple minutes after doing his homework, the door slammed. “Dustin, Paula help bring in the groceries,” Dustin’s dad yelled. Dustin got up quickly and headed to the mini van. “Dustin how’s your vision?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I can see fine,” Dustin said. “After I do this, I’m going to work on my homework.” “That’s sounds good,” Dustin’s mom said. “But for now help bring in the groceries.” Dustin grabbed as many bags as he could and saw Paula slowly walk out to the mini van. As Dustin walked by Paula she was growling. Dustin set the groceries down in the kitchen and started to walk back out. “I have the rest,” Paula said passing Dustin. Dustin looked at the mini van and saw that it was closed and he headed to his room to do his homework. When Dustin was finished he jumped onto his bed and began thinking about his ability. “Dustin!” Paula yelled. “Food is ready!” Dustin quickly ran to the dining room and saw there was a decent meal. “This should take care of lunch and breakfast,” Dustin’s mom said. After brunch Dustin walked back to room and sat comfortably on a chair. He looked outside the window and saw a house across the street with the window open. “I wonder if I could see inside that house,” Dustin said. Dustin focused on the window intently. Flashes of weird colors appeared and Dustin stopped and began breathing heavily. Dustin sat back and closed his eyes. “I wonder what Cindy is doing?” Dustin asked. An array of colors appeared inside Dustin’s head and after a few moments he saw Cindy relaxed on a sofa eating a lolipop. Dustin sighed and began to smile. After a while the image began to fade and it was completely black. “Dustin,” a voice said. Dustin opened his eyes and saw his mother. “Did you finish your homework?” “Yeah I finished it before brunch,” Dustin said. “Really?” Dustin’s mom said. “That was a couple of hours ago.” “What!” Dustin said. Dustin looked at his clock and sighed. “I guess I must’ve dozed off. I thought it was two.” “Okay just making sure” Dustin’s mom said. “By the way the weather cleared up, so why don’t you go outside?” Dustin nodded and headed outside and looked around. He then sat down in a chair and began thinking about what happened. ‘Was I seeing Cindy for real?’ Dustin thought to himself. ‘Or was I just imagining seeing Cindy?’ Dustin looked and saw a black van and Dustin laughed. “Usually with a black van there are people inside spying on people,” Dustin said. “Stop talking to yourself,” Paula said smacking Dustin on the head. Dustin glared at Paula before speaking. “What are you doing here?” Dustin asked. “I live here Brainiac,” Paula said sarcastically. “Not that I need to tell you, but I’m going on a date.” “And you told me because,” Dustin started. “In case any one asks,” Paula said. “I don’t want Mom or Dad getting worried about me.” Suddenly a car drove up at the house and Dustin frowned. “You’re date is Gregory Thompson?” Dustin said disgusted. “Yes it is,” Paula said emphatically. Paula looked at Dustin and sighed. “Look I know you guys got on the wrong foot in the beginning of school. But he’s a good boy.” Paula quickly hugged Dustin and walked to the car. “Yeah by good boy, you mean pain in my as-,” Dustin started. “Dustin!” Dustin’s mom yelled. “Can you come here for a second?” “Anything not to see Gregory Thompson,” Dustin said disgusted entering the house. ------------------------------- Author's Note: Sorry about the way it looks, it looks a lot better on word, I guess Zetaboards doesn't have a shorter word wrap. Oh well, if it hurts your eyes or looks bad, I guess I could add breaks so it looks shorter but longer. |

First Day of School (Flashback Chapter) It was the first day of high school and Dustin was up getting ready. Dustin walked out of the bathroom raring to go. “Why does the dweeb have to go to Memorial High?” a younger Paula groaned. “You know why,” Dustin’s Mom said. “We can’t afford Dustin’s tuition for that luxury school.” “But, but,” Paula said. “I’m a junior; I can’t be seen with him.” “Don’t worry Paula,” Dustin said. “If you graduate next year, you won’t have to deal with me.” “Shut up Brainiac,” Paul said. “Knock it off,” Dustin’s Mom said. “I hope your both ready to go to high school.” “I am,” Dustin said. “I can’t wait to be in high school.” “Yeah I can’t wait,” Paula said sarcastically. There was some honking and Dustin smiled. “It looks like the bus is here,” Dustin said enthusiastically. Paula smacked Dustin upside the head. “Hey,” Dustin said angrily. Paula and Dustin left the house and got on the bus. Unfortunately they had to sit next to each other. “This is going to be the worst day ever,” Paula said quietly. Paula looked at Dustin. “If you bug me at all today or for the rest of the year, and next year, I’m going to make your life a living hell.” “Ooh Paula,” Dustin said. “You know you aren’t allowed to cuss.” Paula grabbed Dustin’s ear and bent it. “Okay, okay,” Dustin said. Paula let go of his ear and Dustin rubbed it. The ride to school was boring. “Oh I forgot,” Paula said when the bus pulled up at school. “Wait until I get off the bus before getting up.” The bus door opened and Paula quickly exited the bus. Dustin sighed and got up to leave the bus. He exited the bus and saw the school and smiled. Dustin walked to his first class. Dustin enjoyed the class, even though he felt like he knew all the information given by the teacher. After a while the bell rang and Dustin exited the class. Dustin started walking to his class when someone grabbed him. Dustin looked and saw an older boy. “Come freshie,” the boy said. “We need to get acquainted.” He grabbed Dustin and led him to a secluded area. “I’m Gregory Thompson and I run this school. So for you I’m king of this school.” “So why are interested in some low life like me?” Dustin asked. Gregory laughed and slammed Dustin into a wall. “You see,” Gregory said. “My sources tell me that you are a gifted person. You almost went to Saint Prince’s School for the gifted. I’m right, aren’t I?” “Yes,” Dustin said causing Gregory to laugh. “And I take it, you didn’t have enough money to go into the place,” Gregory said. “Yes,” Dustin said causing Gregory to laugh again. “So while you may think you’re some gifted student,” Gregory said. “That stuff won’t happen around me. You’ll be some average kid, nothing special, you got it?” “I guess,” Dustin said. “Good, it’s nice to know, I have a puppet,” Gregory said. Gregory opened a door and grabbed Dustin by the arm. “Well then freshie,” Gregory said. “Let me introduce you to the abandoned room.” Gregory tossed Dustin in the room laughing. The door closed and Gregory ran away. Dustin tried to open the door but couldn’t. Dustin sighed deeply and sat down. “I guess I know why it’s abandoned,” Dustin said. “The door only opens one way, the outside.” Dustin found a high chair and sat down looking at the window. After what felt like a long time a person walked up to the door and opened it. “Alright who did this?” the person asked. “It happened too fast,” Dustin said. “Well I’m Principal Evans,” the man said. “If you know who did this, tell me so I can punish them.” “So this has happened before?” Dustin asked. “It has,” Principal Evans said. “We got word from your second class teacher that you didn’t show up. But you showed up in the first class. So it was easy to guess where you were.” “Well I don’t know who did it,” Dustin lied. “But it was just some welcoming prank. I’m sure this is the last time.” “One hell of welcome I’ll say,” Principal Evans said. “Just watch your back.” “So how do I make up my work I missed?” Dustin asked. “You’re lucky,” Principal Evans said. “Mrs. Rosenbaum does nothing the first day of school, so it’s not like you missed anything boring. However in a few minutes it’ll be your third class of the day. So if I were you, I’d head on down there.” “Thank you Principal Evans,” Dustin said. Principal Evans nodded and Dustin walked to class. After school Dustin sat down in his chair and looked out the window and saw Gregory getting into a vehicle. “I hate Gregory Thompson,” Dustin said glaring. Paula sighed as she sat next to him. “I can never find a decent spot on the bus,” Paula said. Paula rolled her eyes toward the window and saw Gregory. “If only Gregory would take me home,” Paula sighed. Dustin looked at her. “So you don’t mind that he’s evil?” Dustin asked. “Evil?” Paula said laughing. “Oh shut up.” “So you know nothing of the term, freshie?” Dustin asked. Paula laughed and shook her head. “Come on Dustin it was just a prank,” Paula said. “You’ll get over it.” “How did he know about Saint Princes?” Dustin asked Paula. Paula frowned and her mood changed, “I said, get over it,” Paula said firmly. Dustin sighed and looked out the window. After a few moments the bus began to move. “I hate Gregory Thompson,” Dustin muttered as he sighed. -------------------------------- Author's Note: Like I said this flashback is nothing but a character development chapter. |

The Labryinth of Puzzles Part One “What is it Mom?” Dustin asked when he entered the house. Dustin’s Mom was reading a book. “So where’s Paula?” Dustin’s Mom asked. “She said she went on a date,” Dustin said. Dustin’s mom sighed and closed the book. “As was expected,” Dustin’s mom said. “I called you in here because I need you to run to the store.” “What store?” Dustin asked. Dustin’s mom stretched and looked in her purse and grabbed something. “Freebie’s Gaming Store,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin looked a bit confused and interested. “The gaming store?” Dustin asked. “Yeah I know it sounds shocking but there is this massive game out,” Dustin’s mom said. “It’s something I’m interested in. It’s a huge highly acclaimed puzzle game.” “Oh a puzzle game,” Dustin said relieved. Dustin thought for a moment but nothing came to him. “I don’t recall there being a giant puzzle game.” “It came out only recently,” Dustin’s mom. “It’s called, ‘The Labyrinth of Puzzles’ and I’ve heard that the experts of puzzles are puzzled by it.” “Sounds fun,” Dustin said. “It is,” Dustin’s mom said. “It has crossword puzzles, word searches, riddles, detective stories. It has basically everything puzzle oriented. I talked about it with your father and he’s agreed to let me buy it.” “So how much is this game?” Dustin asked. “$150,” Dustin’s dad said walking in. “I’ll have to admit, while the price is high, for just a game, it sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun.” “I’ve read in a magazine,” Dustin’s mom said. “There are seven save spots, so we’ll all be able to play it.” “I don’t know if Paula would like it,” Dustin said. “Well it’s up to her if she wants to play it our not,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin’s mom handed him some money. “I’ll take him,” Dustin’s dad said. “I’m not doing anything anyway, and the quicker we get it, the faster we’ll get to play.” Dustin’s dad and Dustin were on their way to Freebie’s Gaming Store. “Hey Freebie is known to give free stuff away,” Dustin said. “What do you think he’ll give us when we buy this game?” “I don’t know,” Dustin’s dad said. After a bit they reached the store and saw the light on. They walked in and saw Roy Freebie reading a magazine. “Hey Roy,” Dustin’s dad said. Roy looked over and his eyes widened. “George Brampton?” Roy asked shocked. “What brings you here?” “Well my wife wants to buy ‘The Labyrinth of Puzzles’,” Dustin’s dad said. Roy nodded and smiled. “That’s a fun game alright,” Roy said. Roy pulled out a pretty large box and put it on the counter. “That’ll be $148.99,” Roy said. Dustin handed him the money. “And $1.01 for your change,” Roy said. “There is one part of this game that is rather mysterious. It’s called ‘The Hidden Task’ I’m not going to tell you how to unlock it, I just want to warn you that it’ll be hard.” “Thank you,” Dustin’s dad said. “If it’s alright with you, can I speak to Dustin for a moment?” Roy asked. Dustin’s dad nodded and grabbed the box and left the store. “So,” Roy said. “You’re pretty quiet.” “I’m just shocked that my Mom wanted this game,” Dustin said. “I know, a lot of people are buying this game,” Roy said. “Hey Freebie, anything free?” Dustin asked. Roy looked around and smiled. He pulled out a miniature box. “I knew I couldn’t hide this from you,” Roy said. Dustin looked inside and looked back at Roy. “What is it?” Dustin asked. “It looks like a memory chip.” “It’s for the game,” Roy said. “This costs $30 but since I owe you, I’ll let you have it for free.” “Why would the game need an extra memory chip?” Dustin said. “Uh-uh,” Roy said opening his magazine. “Now that’ll cost you $30.” Dustin sighed and put the chip in his pocket and started to walk away. “Wait before you go,” Roy said. “How come you haven’t been in here for awhile? I haven’t seen you since summer break.” “School,” Dustin replied. “My schoolwork is important. I only have time for video games when I have nothing going for me at school.” “Well just so you know,” Roy said. “I’m going to need an assistant here, and I was wondering if you wanted a job.” “I thought you worked alone?” Dustin asked. The minivan honked and Dustin looked outside. “Come by next Saturday and I’ll tell you all about it,” Roy said. “Ask your parents permission first.” Dustin ran outside and got into the minivan. “Okay we have to get home quickly,” Dustin’s dad said. “Your mom will be eager to play. So what did Roy want?” “He offered me a job,” Dustin said. Dustin’s dad smiled and smacked Dustin on the back. “Well I approve,” Dustin’s dad said. “Let’s see what you’re mother thinks.” “I have to be here next Saturday to give him my answer,” Dustin said. “Well if you need a ride here, let me know,” Dustin’s dad said. They got home and set up the device. “It’s in the shape of a pyramid,” Dustin said looking at the game. “Wow I didn’t know the game was also a system,” Dustin’s mom said. “It makes sense this way,” Dustin said. “It was said this was a big game, so they probably had to make a system only compatible with the game to compensate for space.” “Okay I got it set up,” Dustin’s dad said. “So who plays first?” “I certainly do,” Dustin’s mom said. “But before I do that, I want to make something perfectly clear. You will only be allowed to play this if you have no business to take care of. Chores, homework, and family come before the game.” “I understand,” Dustin said nodding. Dustin’s dad turned on the device and a screen appeared. “How many players?” the computer asked. “Oh wow its multi player,” Dustin’s mom said. “So maybe we can all play.” Dustin looked in the box and found three weird controllers. Dustin plugged them into the pyramid slots. “There are three controllers,” the computer said. “Will that be three players?” Dustin’s mom clicked the ‘yes’ button. The screen split in three equal pieces and a menu appeared. “Play Now,” the computer said. ----------------------------------------- Author's Note: If you didn't guess Dustin's mom is a puzzle fanatic, she loves crosswords. Which explains why she wanted the game. I'll take a break from posting, to let you all get caught up. Edited by dman_dustin, Feb 1 2009, 04:40 PM.

I guess No one cares ********************************************************** The Labyrinth of Puzzles Part Two Dustin was enjoying himself as was his Dad and Mom. Dustin’s mom laughed as she was doing a crossword puzzle. “Wow this crossword is making me think,” Dustin’s mom said. “Dustin I see your playing the detective stories.” “Yes I figured I give it a shot,” Dustin said. “And?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I know who did it, I’m just gathering evidence to prove it,” Dustin said. “George?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Oh I’m working on the word search,” Dustin’s dad said. “It has a story to it, and I’m curious to see how it plays out.” The door opened and Dustin heard Paula sighed. “How was your date Paula?” Dustin’s mom asked. “It was the best ever,” Paula said dreamily. “So what are you guys doing?” “We’re playing the Labyrinth of Puzzles,” Dustin said. “The Labyrinth of Puzzles?” Paula asked. “It has all sorts of puzzle type games that you play,” Dustin said. “Well have fun,” Paula said confused. Paula walked to her room. Dustin looked on his screen and saw a miniature box. Dustin grabbed it and it opened causing Dustin to look shocked. “Memory Chip found,” the computer said. “Many more items are needed to unlock the hidden task.” “Wow Dustin, you’re good,” Dustin’s mom said. “The hidden task?” Dustin’s dad said. “Isn’t that the thing Roy Freebie was talking about in the gaming shop earlier?” “I think it was,” Dustin shook his head and continued to play. After a few hours Dustin found all the evidence he needed. “Okay it’s getting late,” Dustin’s mom said. “Everyone let’s go to bed.” Dustin saved his file and stretched and headed to bed. He was in his bed thinking about the game. “Keeps my mind of my ability for some reason,” Dustin said. “If I even have an ability.” Dustin looked out the window and started thinking. Dustin quickly fell asleep. Dustin was having a very vivid dream. Paula was playing the Labyrinth of Puzzles with Gregory, and he woke up quickly with his head hurting. Dustin got up and headed for the bathroom. Dustin sat on the toilet and rubbed his head. Dustin got up and took a drink from the sink. “I always knew thinking of Gregory would give me a headache,” Dustin said. “Only that was a very weird headache.” Dustin started to leave the room when he spotted a light. He followed it and saw Paula playing the game. “Paula?” Dustin asked. Paula jumped out of her seat and turned around and looked frightened. “You’re going to pay for that brainiac,” Paula said. Dustin started to smile and then he laughed. “It looks like your secret is out,” Dustin said. Paula glared and sat back down. “What can I say? This game is entertaining,” Paula said. Dustin was about to leave when he noticed Paula focusing on the game. “Just don’t stay up too late,” Dustin said. Paula seemed to ignore Dustin and continued to play the game. Dustin sighed and went back to bed. Dustin had another vivid dream about the black van he saw earlier. “Paula Lori Brampton,” a voice yelled causing Dustin to quickly get up. “Stop playing the game now. Go to bed young lady.” Dustin walked to the living room and his eyes widened as he saw Paula playing. “Paula?” Dustin’s mom asked concerned. Dustin walked closer and saw Paula in a deep trance. “What’s going on?” Dustin asked. “Paula have you played all night?” Paula didn’t make any noise and continued to play the game. Dustin looked at the screen and noticed Paula was playing a weird game. “I’m worried Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “Well we could pour some really cold water on her and see if that’ll wake her up,” Dustin said. Paula continued playing the game. “Wake her up?” Dustin’s mom asked. “You make it sound like she’s in a trance.” “She may very well be,” Dustin said causing his mother to fold her arms. “Look Paula isn’t known to play video games, and so it’s hard to know what a video game would do to her.” “Well we we’re fine,” Dustin’s mom said. “Paula might have more of a susceptible mind than us,” Dustin said. “It’s really unknown why Paula is doing this.” “I suppose you’re right,” Dustin’s mom said. “This isn’t like Paula at all. By the way what game is she playing?” Dustin looked at the screen for a few moments. Dustin began to see colors and then Dustin saw himself walking in on Paula. He spoke but no sound came out. After Dustin saw himself leave Paula went to the menu screen. “Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “Just a second,” Dustin said. Paula scrolled and picked a game and Dustin closed his eyes. When he opened them he saw his mother and Paula. “I think it’s called Obstacle Illusions,” Dustin said. “That’s really funny because it sounds like optical illusions.” Dustin’s mom picked up a small thick booklet and flipped through the pages. “Obstacle Illusions,” Dustin’s mom said. “A puzzle game where you try to reach the end. However there are many obstacle illusions standing in your way. It also stimulates your visual cortex. Warning may cause attention problems.” “They outright say it might leave them in a trance state?” Dustin asked. Dustin’s mom looked through the booklet. “If one appears distracted and you are unable to get their attention,” Dustin’s mom said. “Turn the device off immediately. Also rest is recommended.” Dustin went to the device and pushed the power button. After a few moments the television screen went black. After a few moments Paula made a noise. “What’s going on?” Paula asked. “What?” Paula looked around very bewildered. She got up and looked at her mom. “What time is it?” Paula asked. “It’s seven in the morning,” Dustin’s mom said. Paula’s eyes widened as she looked shocked. “Don’t worry about it, just go to sleep.” “Okay,” Paula said. “But wake me up if there’s food. I’m kind of hungry.” Paula rubbed her eyes and went to her room. “For now, I think it’s best if we don’t play it,” Dustin’s mom said. “At least for now. I better go wake your father up.” Dustin’s mom left and Dustin picked up the system and turned it around and gasped. “I don’t believe it,” Dustin said shocked. “Created and designed by the Sanders Electric Company.” ******* Author's note: The next chapter is a little weird because it's first person. |

Suspicions (As Told by Dustin Brampton) I couldn’t believe my eyes, there on the game system was the Sanders Electric Company. The same company who apparently designed the optometry machine also built a video game. I was shocked and I had to go to my room and think about things. As I lay in bed, thoughts or suspicions began to rise into my head. This couldn’t be a mere coincidence, could it? Was there more to this company than I realized? I started to breathe slowly and then I sighed and started to laugh. “Don’t be silly,” I said. “I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation for this. The Sanders Electric Company is just a company specializing in electronics. It’s like Microsoft, or Sony.” My breath slowed down and I smiled as I had a clear mind again. I started to think about how I knew Paula had picked that particular puzzle game. After all according to the vision I had, I left the room before Paula chose it. And then it hit me. The vision I had, it wasn’t a vision, it was a look back into the past. So that means this ability I have has other properties then I first thought. But looking back in the past is impossible. Then another flash of inspiration hit me. That dream, I had the one before waking up to Paula at night. I remember Gregory and Paula playing a game. Was that the past as well? And the black van, what was that? Suspicions started to race through my head again. “Dustin?” I looked up and saw it was my mother. “Yes,” I said in a calm and polite manner. “Are you okay?” My mom asked me. “Yeah I’m fine,” I said. She smiled and nodded. “Well I’ll be making some food soon,” she said. “I want to let Paula get some rest though. So it might be awhile.” “That’s fine with me,” I said. She turned around and left. I decided it was better to find something peaceful to think about. So I let my mind wander and then it happened. I closed my eyes and I saw an array of colors. When I opened them I began to feel myself moving or at least my vision was. It felt as though I left the room and I was staring down at my house. I then began to think hard and soon I was in control. I flew around but everything felt weird. It felt as if I was flying but there were no sounds, it was just quiet or quieter than it should’ve been. I did hear a clock ticking so I assumed I was still in my room but my mind was elsewhere. It didn’t bother me so I let my sight soar around. After a few minutes I found myself staring at my school. ‘It wouldn’t hurt to take a peak,’ I thought to myself. I entered the school and I looked around. I was disappointed that it was empty. But it was Sunday what did I expect. I heard some shuffling and I closed my eyes. When I opened them I was back in my room, and my sister was staring at me with a weird look on her face. “Paula?” I asked confused. She sat down next to me and had tears in her eyes. “I’ve been thinking about it,” Paula said. “What happened with that game, the last thing I remember was you talking but then after that, you and mom were staring at me.” “Don’t worry,” I told. “It was just a side effect of the game. Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” “I’m tired,” Paula said. “But I can’t fall asleep.” I looked at her and for the first time I didn’t know what to do. She hugged me and then left the room. I was still unsure of what to do so I stared at the wall until I heard my mother. “Okay breakfast is ready,” she yelled. I got up and walked to the kitchen and ate silently. Paula was silent as well. Dad and Mom respected that and didn’t say anything. After Paula ate she got up and left the kitchen. “So Dustin I heard from your father that you got a job offering at Freebie’s Gaming store,” my mother said. “Yeah Roy offered me a job,” I said. “I have to give him an answer by next Saturday.” “Well,” my mom said. “Go for it, I think it would be a great experience for you.” I began to smile and I nodded. “I guess I’ll have a job then,” I said. “Just don’t let it interfere with your schoolwork,” my mom said. “Of course,” I finished my breakfast and started to leave. “George,” my mom said quietly. I left the kitchen but stayed close and listened. “We need to talk about the Labyrinth of Puzzles,” my mom said. “I agree,” my dad said. “I looked it up and so far there have been fifty cases of decreased attention span.” “How about no attention span?” my mom said. “It really scared me that Paula couldn’t hear me at all. It was that damn game.” “Sybil,” my dad said. “I know it was scary but I don’t think we should get rid of it. It cost a lot of money. I think we just need to devise a buddy system. Like no one plays the game by themselves.” “Okay maybe I was a little rash,” my mom said. “I just don’t want anything to happen to Dustin or Paula.” I left and sat in a chair in my room and thought about the Labyrinth of Puzzles. I began to wonder why it had such an effect on people. Why did it mess with people’s minds? I then remembered what happened when I saw the game Paula was playing. I stared at it and it activated my ability. It did say it stimulated the visual cortex. I yawned and decided to take a nap. ****** Author's Note: Nothing much to say but, when I was writing the chapter, it didn't feel right, but re-reading, I think it's fine. Night Alone, and Day Unknown After a few days of what happened to Paula seemed to deteriorate. The school called and said Paula was suffering. She was crying and it looked like she hadn’t slept a wink of sleep. So Dustin’s parent decided to take her to sleep therapy overnight and left Dustin alone. “Dustin we don’t want to do this,” Dustin’s mom said. “But we have to forbid you from playing the Labyrinth of Puzzles. I know it might sound like a punishment, but we don’t want to risk it. We’ll be back tomorrow. Get to bed early you do have school tomorrow.” “I understand,” Dustin said. They left and Dustin stared at the television which wasn’t on. Dustin sighed and went to his room to do his homework. After a few hours, Dustin smiled when he finished his homework. He looked at the clock and saw that it six p.m. Dustin felt hungry so he went into the kitchen and saw the leftovers and groaned. He put the meal in the microwave and sat down in the living room. He stared at the game system and felt curious. “No Dustin,” Dustin said. “You said you wouldn’t.” Dustin heard the microwave go off and ate his meal in silence. Dustin heard noises outside and slightly smiled. “Let’s see how far I’ve gotten,” Dustin said. Dustin closed his and concentrated but nothing happened. Dustin opened them and was slightly confused. “I know I haven’t used it since Sunday but why can’t I use my ability?” Dustin said. He closed them again and concentrated harder. He saw an array of colors but nothing felt different. “I guess I still haven’t figured out how to do it,” Dustin said. He saw the game system and smiled. “In the name of, uh, science, I order an experiment be done.” Dustin looked outside and saw the minivan was still gone. He turned on the game and it loaded. “Let’s see the game was called Obstacle Illusions,” Dustin said. He scrolled down and the game began to play. After a few moments Dustin felt funny. He played the game for awhile and he noticed something glowing on the screen. He picked it up and there was a voice. “Congratulations you found another secret item,” the voice said. “You are a step closer to the hidden task.” “Oh I get it,” Dustin said. “Every game that you play must have a hidden item on it. And when you collect them all you unlock the hidden task. Dustin exited the game and turned off the system and looked at the clock. “Ten?” Dustin said shocked. Dustin looked outside but there was no minivan. “How’d did that happen?” Dustin rubbed his head out of shock. Dustin went to his room and looked over his homework. Dustin yawned so he turned on the alarm clock and fell asleep. Dustin woke up early and saw that he woke up before the alarm clock went off. Dustin got up and headed to the bathroom to take a shower. After Dustin was done he looked outside to see that the minivan was still gone. “I guess they’re still at sleep therapy,” Dustin said. Dustin went to the kitchen and made himself breakfast and lunch. Dustin felt tired when he heard the bus. He walked outside and walked onto the bus and sat down. Dustin kept yawning and looked out the window. ‘I wonder if this has anything to do with that game,’ Dustin thought. ‘It did sort of have an effect on me like Paula.’ Dustin noticed the bus stopped and looked to see they were at school. He got off the bus and before he knew it someone grabbed him. “Hey Freshie,” a familiar voice said. “Gregory,” Dustin said annoyed. “So where’s Paula?” Gregory asked. Dustin looked at Gregory for a moment and resisted the urge to yawn. “She went to sleep therapy,” Dustin said. “And no I don’t know when she’ll be back to school.” Gregory hit Dustin in the arm and started to walk away. “Hold on,” Dustin said. Gregory stopped and turned around. “You guys went on a date last Saturday, what did you guys do?” Gregory grinned and walked up to Dustin. “Do you really want to know?” Gregory asked disgusting Dustin. “Not anymore,” Dustin said. Gregory laughed and hit Dustin again. “I’m kidding,” Gregory said. “We had dinner, watched a movie, and played a game.” Gregory turned around and walked away. “So I was right,” Dustin said. “That dream I had was my ability looking into the past.” Dustin walked to class and yawned. Dustin sat down and closed his eyes and he saw an array of colors. He opened them and he was slightly scared. His teacher was completely naked. ‘Damn,’ Dustin thought closing his eyes. ‘That’s one aspect of my ability I don’t need out of control.’ When he opened them Dustin’s teacher was clothed again and he sighed. “Okay class,” the teacher said. Dustin slightly ignored the teacher and did the work assigned by the teacher. The day was long and it was finally time for lunch. He ate it in tired silence when he slightly groaned when Gregory sat down. “I’m curious why did you want to know what I did with your sister?” Gregory asked. “I have never seen Paula play a video game in my life,” Dustin said. “So it was shocking to see her play a video game my mom bought for the whole family. She said that the game was entertaining. Which was-.” “Okay, okay,” Gregory said interrupting Dustin. “Yes we played the Labyrinth of Puzzles at my house, and no she was fine then. Is that what this about, her playing a video game and her being in sleep therapy?” “Yes,” Dustin said. “Paula was in a trance when she played a game. She wouldn’t do anything but play until we turned the device off. It seems to have affected her since.” “Again,” Gregory said. “She was fine when we played it. Although we did lose track of time.” “Same thing happened to me,” Dustin said. “It felt like I was playing for an hour, but it had been like four.” “Interesting,” Gregory said. “See ya freshie.” Gregory got up and left and Dustin’s stomach turned. “Did I just have a normal conversation with Gregory?” Dustin asked himself. The rest of the day went by quickly. When Dustin was dropped off at home he noticed the minivan was still gone. “Maybe they came home, and then went shopping,” Dustin said. Dustin walked into the house and noticed it was eerily silent. He looked at the phone and saw there was a message. “Hi honey,” Dustin’s mom said sadly. “Paula is sleeping better but she still has some problems to work out. We’re thinking of staying overnight again. Your dad should’ve stopped by and left some money for dinner. If everything is okay by tomorrow we’ll come in the morning. We might not be able to take you to Freebie’s but you should be fine. We love you sweetheart.” The message went off and Dustin gasped. “Tomorrow is Saturday,” Dustin said. ******* Author's Note: Spoiler: click to toggle

Clues of Distractions Dustin sat down thinking about the job he could have tomorrow. Dustin kept sitting and suddenly his eyes wondered onto the television and smiled. “No,” Dustin said immediately. “If they catch me, oh I’ll get in trouble. Yesterday was fine, but not today. On the other hand they did say they would come in the morning, so maybe I’ll be fine.” Dustin looked around and an object caught his eye. An alarm clock was sitting there and Dustin began to smile. “Okay so here’s what I’ll do,” Dustin said out loud. “I set the alarm for every fifteen minutes. Just so I don’t get to involved into the game.” Dustin set the alarm for the next hour. “But what if it doesn’t get my attention?” Dustin asked himself. Dustin snapped his fingers and looked around for some headphones. He plugged it into the alarm clock and smiled. “So I’ll order a pizza by five,” Dustin said. Dustin looked at the pyramid system and nodded. Dustin looked at the alarm clock and saw that it was on. He checked the connections and the volume. He then turned on the system. “Okay let’s see how many secret items I can get tonight,” Dustin said. Dustin started playing a crossword game and finished it quickly. He looked at the alarm clock and smiled. “Five minutes that’s got to be a record,” Dustin said. Dustin saw the storyline when something felt out of place. He clicked something and a screen appeared. “Sharp eye,” the computer said. “You found the next piece of the clue to hidden task.” “Excellent,” Dustin said. Dustin looked at the alarm clock and smiled. “So in total seven minutes passed. I wonder if it was that one game that was the problem. Okay word search time.” After a few moments a loud buzzing appeared that caused Dustin to hit the ground. “Wow that’s loud,” Dustin said. He looked at the clock and nodded. “So far nothing. No time loss. Dustin looked at the screen and again he saw something off. When he clicked on it “Congrats,” the computer said. “Another piece of the puzzle found. Eleven pieces left.” “Oh man,” Dustin said. “I’ll never get them all.” He saved his progress and turned off the system. Dustin looked through the manual at the games listed. “Some of these are funky,” Dustin said. Dustin yawned and looked at the clock and saw that it was time to order dinner. He called the pizza restaurant and ordered dinner. He sat down and that’s when he gasped. The system was on, he tried to turn it off but it wouldn’t. “What the-,” Dustin said. He unplugged the power source and it finally turned off. “How did that happen?” He looked through the manual and couldn’t find anything related to the problem. “Weird,” Dustin said. “You’d think they mention a power problem since they mentioned the hypnotic trance problem.” After a few more minutes there was a knock on the door. “Hello,” Dustin said answering the door. There was no one outside and Dustin shook his head. When he looked at the television he fell backwards and hit his head. When he got up he shook his head. “It’s not possible,” Dustin said as he saw the system was on. Dustin looked carefully and noticed it was plugged in. “But how, I unplugged it.” Dustin became very scared and sat down away from the television. Dustin’s mind raced to many possibilities. Suddenly Dustin became very angry and got up. “I know what’s going on,” Dustin said in a loud voice. “You think I’m afraid of your invisibility. I mean if I have an ability why shouldn’t someone else?” Dustin closed his eyes and concentrated. He began to see an array of colors and started to laugh. “Let’s see if thermal vision will let me see anything,” Dustin said. He opened them and gasped. He saw multiple heat signatures in the shape of footprints. There were handprints as well. He looked around but he couldn’t see anyone. “Well I guess you escaped for now,” Dustin said. Dustin closed his eyes and when he opened them he saw a post-it note attached to the game console. He walked to it and read the note allowed. “We will not allow you to stop playing the game,” Dustin read. “Unless you’ve found seven of the fifteen items.” Dustin crumpled the note up and shook his head. “Dustin,” a low angry voice said “Hello,” Dustin said. He closed them and when he opened them the game system was off and he was holding the remote. “I thought we made it perfectly clear that this game was off limits,” Dustin’s mom said angry. “What the-,” Dustin said shocked. He threw the controller away from him. ********* Author's note: Spoiler: click to toggle

An Odd Clue in an Odd Place “But I wasn’t,” Dustin said. “I couldn’t have had. Just a few moments ago I was being haunted by invisible people.” “Invisible people?” Dustin’s mom said. “Funny.” “No I ordered pizza,” Dustin said nervously. “The game came on by itself, the note, I’m confused. Just before I heard a voice and I was standing. The next thing I’m playing the game? As if I was hallucinating?” “Calm down Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “What do you mean?” “I was having vivid hallucinations,” Dustin said. “Even auditory ones.” “That’s what Paula said,” Dustin’s mom said shocking Dustin. “Paula said she remembers going to bed and not playing the game all night and when she opened her eyes she was still in the living room. That’s it this device has got to go.” “Not even the alarm clock,” Dustin said. “Wait a minute, how long was I out?” Dustin looked around and saw the alarm clock. “No way, hold on a sec.” Dustin looked in the kitchen and saw a box of pizza. “No way,” Dustin said shocked. Dustin came back and saw his mom putting the Labyrinth of Puzzles away. “No Mom, wait.” “What do you mean?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I’m getting rid of this thing.” “Something’s not right here,” Dustin said. His mom stopped and looked at him. “What do you mean?” Dustin’s mom asked. “The alarm clock I used it in hopes I wouldn’t get distracted,” Dustin said. “The box of pizza indicates that I did order Pizza and that most of what I saw was true.” “Meaning,” Dustin’s mom said. “Not only does that device cause visual and auditory hallucinations, but it alters memory.” Dustin plugged it back in. “Mom, I want to check something,” Dustin said. “Just make sure I don’t get distracted.” “Okay,” Dustin’s mom said confused. Dustin looked at his hidden items and smiled. “As I suspected,” Dustin said. “I have seven of the fifteen items. The note in my hallucination said I wouldn’t stop until I had seven items.” “Okay,” Dustin’s mom said. “I think we should keep this device and continue forward,” Dustin said. “After what it did to Paula and you?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I know but think of it like this,” Dustin said. “I only need eight more items to unlock the hidden task. But how’s this for a rule. There needs to be at least two people in the room. On person away from the television screen and near the power source. If the other person is distracted or won’t do anything. The first person will turn off the power.” “So let me guess,” Dustin’s mom said. “You want me to watch you play a video game?” “I guess that’s what it would mean,” Dustin said. Dustin’s mom sighed and sat down. “Dustin you aren’t making this easy for me,” Dustin’s mom said. “I only came here to see if you were okay. I need to get back to your sister and father. And I did catch you playing the game when I told you not to.” “I don’t mean right now,” Dustin said. “I was thinking two hidden items a day.” Dustin’s mom sighed. “Okay,” Dustin’s mom said. “As long as Paula is okay with the device, I’ll be okay with it. But if Paula wants this device gone, then I will get rid of it.” Dustin nodded and looked at the clock. “Hold on is it still Friday or is it Saturday?” Dustin asked causing his mother to laugh. “It’s Saturday,” Dustin’s mom said. She suddenly gasped. “Actually that’s why I’m here, I was going to take you to Freebie’s. So go get ready.” Dustin nodded and his mother sat down. Dustin walked to his room and saw a post it note. He picked it up and read it. “I want to warn you while I can,” Dustin said as he read the post it note. “Next time don’t be so flagrant about having an ability. People get locked up that way.” Dustin shook his head in disbelief. ******* Author's note: I can't believe my subconscious struck again. In reference to the memory alteration that Dustin thought. |

Freebie’s Gaming Store Dustin’s mom took Dustin to Freebie’s Gaming Store and started talking. “Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “I really want to punish you for disobeying me. But I just don’t know if I should blame you.” “Well,” Dustin said. “The truth is I really want to know what that hidden task thing is all about. I tried to resist but my curiosity got the better of me.” “I understand but you’ve got to know why I forbade it,” Dustin’s mom said. “I mean what if no one was there to turn off the power. And we were gone for a long time. Someone could die that way, through dehydration.” Dustin gasped and sat back. “I never thought it like that,” Dustin said. “This game was supposed to be fun,” Dustin’s mom said. “Puzzles, and games and stuff but ever since we got the thing it’s been nothing but trouble. I know what you said earlier about how if affects people differently but so far the evidence isn’t pointing in that direction.” Dustin started to frown and got a little mad. ‘Sounds to me like someone is doing it on purpose,’ Dustin thought to himself. “Well hopefully my idea will work. So it’ll be fun and safe.” “Well I suppose I could read a book while you play,” Dustin’s mom said. “But we’ll see, I’d prefer you wait until Paula comes home.” “Yes of course,” Dustin said. “So when is she coming home.” “The doctor told us she still has some issues to work out,” Dustin’s mom said. “But hopefully Sunday.” Dustin opened the door and closed it. “Well I’ll see you later then,” Dustin said. Dustin walked inside and saw Roy playing a different game than the Labyrinth. “Hey Roy,” Dustin said. Roy saw Dustin and smiled He turned the game off and looked at Dustin. “So how’s it going?” Roy asked. “Well hoping to get a job,” Dustin said causing Roy to laugh. “Don’t worry as long as your parents said okay,” Roy said. “Both of them said I could,” Dustin said. “Then welcome to Freebie’s Gaming Store,” Roy said shaking hands with Dustin. “Uh Roy there’s something I need to discuss with you,” Dustin said. “Go ahead,” Roy said. “It’s about the Labyrinth of Puzzles,” Dustin said. “What have you heard?” “What do you mean?” Roy asked. “Oh right,” Dustin said. “About the odd side effects.” Roy began to laugh and then stopped when he looked at Dustin’s look. “You mean to tell me that the Labyrinth of Puzzles caused your sister to go to sleep therapy?” Roy asked “Yes because of that game Obstacle Illusions,” Dustin said. “Well to answer your question none,” Roy said. “Well okay I heard some rumors of it turning some kids into zombies but I didn’t think it was possible.” “I wish I could believe you but it affected me as well,” Dustin said. Roy looked at him weird. “How could it affect you?” Roy asked shocked. “I was standing waiting for the pizza to come,” Dustin said. “Next thing I know, my mom is mad at me for playing the game and the pizza was in the kitchen.” “You’re serious?” Roy asked. “Holy cow, I’ve never got affected at all. Well maybe some time jumps here and there but nothing that weird.” “Also before I remember having only four hidden items,” Dustin said. “I don’t remember getting the other three I somehow got.” “Messed up,” Roy said. “That is just odd.” “Roy what’s on the memory card?” Dustin asked. Roy rolled his eyes and sighed. “The hidden task,” Roy said. Dustin looked at him in shock. “What do you mean?” Dustin asked. “The hidden items are necessary to unlock the hidden task,” Roy said. “But, you need the hidden items and the memory card to access the hidden task.” “It is kind of funny that one of the hidden items looks like the memory card,” Dustin said. “Yeah,” Roy said. “I heard it was also a subtle clue, hoping people would make the connection between the two, so you’d buy the memory card.” “So I only need eight more items,” Dustin said. “Have you played the hidden task?” “No,” Roy said. “I mostly just heard rumors about it. Many people still haven’t played the hidden task. Well regardless I want to tell you why you will be working here.” “Oh right,” Dustin said. “I’m going to Connecticut with my father for awhile,” Roy said. “There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be done, and I need someone to watch this place while I’m gone for the two months.” “Wow,” Dustin said. “That’s shocking.” “I know,” Roy said. “Since you have school on weekdays, I’ll need a morning manager while you worry about the after school hours until closing.” “So the store opens at nine and closes at nine?” Dustin asked. “Yes,” Roy said. “So someone will have a six hour shift and you will have a six hour shift.” “How many customers will I have to deal with?” Dustin asked. “A lot,” Roy said. “On the weekdays a lot of people come in the afternoon. And you’ll probably see a lot on the weekends. Oh and it’s okay if you bring your homework just make sure you do it when no customers are here. And don’t worry about the inventory and stock. Megan Friece comes in every day and does that. Though you will need to write down what was sold for her.” “Megan Friece?” Dustin asked. “Who’s that?” “Oh she’s the one that makes sure everything is running smoothly. Remember when you said I work alone. Well that wasn’t entirely true. Megan is also in charge of the paychecks.” “So when do I work?” Dustin asked. “Monday,” Roy said. “I still have to find a morning shift person though. I’ll leave Connecticut the following week.” “Megan can’t work then?” Dustin asked. “Well,” Roy said. “She probably could handle it but she’s pretty adamant about just restocking the store. So she probably won’t want to work in a different way. Well that’s it, you can stay or go back home but yeah you don’t start until Monday.” Dustin nodded and looked outside to see the minivan gone. “Well I better walk back home,” Dustin said. “Roy I was wondering.” “Yes,” Roy said. “ Could you find something to help me with the effects of the game,” Dustin said. “You mean something to snap you out of whatever’s messing you up?” Roy asked. “Yeah,” Dustin said. “Well I’ll look around,” Roy said. “I’ll let you know on Monday.” “Well I better get going it’s a long walk,” Dustin said as he started to leave the store. ********* Author's Note: Well I couldn't leave this in a plot hole. |

The Real Reason and Paula’s Request Dustin sat on the couch sweating and breathed in and out and then he shook his head. “Freebie’s Gaming Store is too far away,” Dustin said. Suddenly there was a noise outside and Dustin looked and saw the minivan. Paula came out and she looked normal. She came in the house and smiled at Dustin and walked to her room. Dustin’s dad and mom walked in with puzzled looks on their faces. “Well,” Dustin’s mom said. “She seems a little different.” Dustin’s dad and mom looked at Dustin who shrugged his shoulders. “So Dustin how was Freebie’s?” Dustin’s dad asked. “Oh I start work on Monday,” Dustin said. Dustin’s dad smiled and walked to the kitchen. Dustin’s mom leaned closer to Dustin. “Um could you check on Paula,” Dustin’s mom whispered. Dustin got up and walked to Paula’s room. He knocked on the door. “Come in,” Paula said. Dustin came in and in a quick motion the door was closed and locked. “Okay Brainiac I wanted to talk to you.” Dustin was shocked and looked at her. “Okay this is hard for me,” Paula said. “And I don’t want mom and dad to know.” “To know what?” Dustin asked. “About what I witnessed when that game affected me,” Paula said. “You mean the hallucinations?” Dustin said. “Not really,” Paula said quietly. “When mom turned off the game I couldn’t remember what had happened. I was confused and disoriented. When I fell asleep I dreamt about things I forgot. It was like the house was haunted. I was really scared.” Dustin’s mouth opened a bit. “So the hallucination was our house being haunted,” Dustin said. “If you want to call it that,” Paula said impatiently. “I was afraid and scared that the person in the house could still be here. I couldn’t sleep knowing what might happen to me. Thankfully the sleep therapy got me over that. I’m still rather nervous though.” “Yeah I had a similar experience,” Dustin said. “Though I think it was an invisible person.” “Invisible?” Paula said laughing. “Right, anyway I need to ask you something about the game.” “Sure go ahead,” Dustin said. “Well it’s more of a request,” Paula said. “I was wondering if you would find out who did this to me.” “Actually I was hoping to continue playing the Labyrinth of Puzzles,” Dustin said. “I want to see what the hidden task is all about and it might help me learn a few things as well. Like who did this to you.” “Go ahead,” Paula said. “I know Mom wanted to know what I think about the future of the game. And while I’ll never play it again, I don’t mind if other people played it.” “Thanks Paula,” Dustin said. “So what are your plans?” “Well I was thinking of calling Gregory,” Paula said. “It’s been awhile since I’ve seen him.” Dustin walked out and went to his room and began thinking. ‘It has been awhile since I’ve used by ability just for fun,’ Dustin thought to himself. ‘But this whole Labyrinth of Puzzles has been distracting. Tomorrow I’ll work on my ability. Who knows when mom will let me play the Labyrinth of Puzzles, even if Paula says its okay.’ “Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin looked up and saw her. “So how’s Paula?” “She’s fine,” Dustin said. Dustin’s mom nodded and left. After a few minutes the phone rang. “Dustin it’s for you,” Dustin’s dad said. Dustin got up and walked to the phone and answered. “Hello?” Dustin said. “Oh hey Dustin,” a voice said. “It’s me Roy, I found a morning manager, and she’ll start on Wednesday. Which means I’ll leave Saturday.” “Okay,” Dustin said. “So who is this girl?” “Do you know Cindy?” Roy asked. “Uh Cindy the attractive school nurse,” Dustin said. There was a noise and saw his Dad holding back laughter and Dustin blushed. “Yeah?” Roy said. “Yeah Cindy your school’s youngest nurse. Yeah well it’s her cousin Amy. And from what I hear Amy is a national time champion of games. So it’s an honor for her to work here.” “That’s cool,” Dustin said. “Where’d you find Amy?” “Oh she came in with Cindy,” Roy said. “Oh and about that thing you wanted. I haven’t found anything yet but I’ll keep digging, I’ll let you know Monday.” “Thanks Roy,” Dustin said. They hung up the phone and Dustin’s dad burst into laughter. “Oh man Dustin,” Dustin’s dad said. “If only I could describe people like you.” Dustin smiled and shook his head and left. Dustin sat on the couch and continued to think. ‘Wow that was a dumb move,’ Dustin thought. ‘Just reveal to everyone you have a crush on Cindy.’ “Hey Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “I don’t know if I asked you yet, but what about Homework?” “Uh there was no homework,” Dustin said. “Or at least none I had to do.” “Okay then,” Dustin’s mom said. “We’ll start dinner in a few hours.” ‘Then again,’ Dustin thought. ‘Why not start practice while I have free time.’ ******** Author's Note: At the time I knew what Dustin's dad was talking about, but for the life of me I don't know now. I think it was a joke about how Dustin talked freely but without realizing the consequences, but I'm not sure. |

Fine Tuning ‘Now the problem is activating it,’ Dustin thought. ‘If there was someway to just easily access it.’ Dustin closed his eyes and thought about his ability and Dustin started to see the multitude of colors but nothing felt different. ‘What if I give it a name?’ Dustin thought. ‘I could activate by concentrating on the name of the ability. But what do I call it? Super Vision? Video Camera Vision? None of those sounds like a good name.’ Dustin closed his eyes and suddenly an array of colors appeared and Dustin opened his eyes causing him to jump. Dustin saw himself and jump and he couldn’t resist laughing. ‘I can’t believe that’s how I jump when I’m startled.’ Dustin thought. ‘I mean it was like I was looking in a Mirror. Wait that’s it. Perhaps I could call it Mirror Vision. Granted it doesn’t explain all that I can do, but it sounds like a unique name for my ability. I like it, Mirror Vision named because it’s like looking in a mirror without one.’ Dustin smiled and nodded. Dustin closed his eyes and concentrated on the name and an array of colors appeared and he opened them. Dustin began to think about Cindy. And without warning it felt as if Dustin’s vision was speeding off somewhere. He saw a building and his vision went inside. He saw a two girls playing a video game and Dustin smiled. One of them was Cindy and the other one must be Amy. Dustin stared at Cindy and saw her laughing. “Dustin must be really happy if he’s smiling like that,” Dustin’s mom whispered loudly. Dustin closed his eyes and opened them and saw that he was at home. Dustin looked over and saw his dad and mom staring at him. “Sybil darling, I think he heard you,” Dustin’s dad whispered loudly. They both walked into the kitchen laughing. Dustin sighed and shook his head. ‘Maybe I shouldn’t spy on Cindy,’ Dustin said. ‘It isn’t right. But how about if I spy on the neighborhood.’ Dustin closed his eyes and concentrated. Nothing happened so concentrated on the name. Again nothing happened causing Dustin to sigh. ‘You’re very fickle aren’t you?’ Dustin thought. Dustin sighed and got more comfortable and just stared off into space. “Dinner time,” Dustin’s dad yelled. Dustin looked and saw that a few hours passed and he sighed. He walked into the kitchen and sat at the table. Moments later Paula came in and smiled. “So Paula how are doing?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I’m fine,” Paula said. “Okay,” Dustin’s mom said. After a few moments of silence Dustin’s dad began to speak. “So uh Dustin you start work Monday,” Dustin’s dad said. “Yes,” Dustin said. “So I’ll need a ride.” Dustin’s mom smiled and looked at Dustin. “I’ll take you,” Dustin’s mom said. “So when are the hours?” “Three to nine,” Dustin said. “Everyday?” Dustin’s dad asked. “I think so,” Dustin said. “I know its closed on Sunday though. He said I could do my homework while I’m not doing anything.” “Hold on,” Paula said. “When did Brainiac get a job?” “Roy Freebie wants me to work at his store,” Dustin said. “At the Gaming Store?” Paula asked smiling. “Okay then.” “Did Roy say how long you would be working?” Dustin’s dad asked. “Roy said he was going to Connecticut for two months,” Dustin said. “So I’m not sure after those two months.” “Well it’s October 15th now so he won’t be back until the new year,” Dustin’s dad said. “Did he say anything about holidays?” “Not sure but I doubt I’d have to work on holidays,” Dustin said. “Since I doubt the store will be open then.” “True,” Dustin’s dad said. “That is possible.” There was another long pause of silence and Dustin was done. Dustin headed to his room and jumped on his bed and yawned. Dustin closed his eyes and concentrated heavily on his ability. Dustin sighed when nothing happened. “Sometimes I even wonder if I have an ability,” Dustin said quietly. Dustin heard some noises and closed his eyes and concentrated so hard that his nose started to bleed. “Oh great,” Dustin said. Dustin walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror and gasped. His eyes were bleeding and Dustin shook his head. Dustin washed his eyes out and sighed. ‘I shouldn’t have concentrated too hard,’ Dustin thought. After he was done he sat down and saw a post it note and his eyes widened. He picked it up and read it silently. ‘The path isn’t concentration, but fine tuning, which means you have to find out how you feel when you use your ability.’ “Well,” Dustin said. “So do I have an ability guardian or what?” Dustin started thinking and thought. ‘Well I was just as eager to spy on Cindy as I was on the neighborhood. Or maybe it has something to do with concentration. When I was trying to look at Cindy I was calm and relaxed but when I was trying to think of the neighborhood I was concentrating. Perhaps that’s it, perhaps I should let it happen, not try to let it happen.’ Dustin closed his eyes and calmly sat there and started thinking of his ability. Soon an array of colors appeared and Dustin smiled. He opened them and soon he saw himself looking at himself and then he left the house and looked everywhere. He saw some police lights and followed them. ‘Dustin,’ Dustin thought to himself. ‘Perhaps you shouldn’t follow the police there’s no telling where that’s going to lead.’ Dustin’s vision pulled away from the flashing lights and looked around and Dustin smiled. He could see wherever he wanted. Suddenly something flashed over his eyes causing him to reel in fright. Dustin closed his eyes and opened them and saw his room. “Man I have to realize that I’m quite safe,” Dustin said quietly. “Oh well it’s getting late maybe I should go to sleep.” Dustin got comfortable and fell asleep. He woke up and yawned and saw it was really dark outside. Dustin checked the clock and saw it five in the morning. Dustin went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. He seemed fine and he went to his room. ‘Since I woke up early,’ Dustin thought. ‘It’s Sunday so maybe I should practice my ability.’ Dustin closed his eyes and soon an array of colors appeared. Dustin open them and Dustin decided to check the house out. His vision flew into Paula’s room, where she was sleeping. Dustin smiled and went to the kitchen and then went to his living room. ‘Let’s see if I can’t do this,’ Dustin thought. Dustin slightly concentrated and soon his vision became thermal. ‘Cool,’ Dustin said. ‘When my ability is activated, all I need to do is slightly concentrate to add cool effects.’ Dustin looked around and felt nervous about thermal vision. ‘It is going to take time to getting used to it.’ Dustin tried to see his room in thermal but he ended outside where Dustin started to get nervous. There was person sitting on the porch. Dustin concentrated and vision turned to normal but he couldn’t see the person. He tried to switch to thermal again but his eyes reeled in pain causing him to close his eyes. He opened them and saw that he was in his room. ‘I guess I haven’t got used to it yet,’ Dustin thought. ****************** Author's Note: I didn't realize how funny that exchange was between Dustin's Mom and Dad. The part where they whispered. I suppose I should explain more about his ability (or more of what occurs), if your confused. Dustin Brampton has settled on an array of colors method. Which means when he sees an array of colors (or if you want to think of it this way: Rainbow Colors) he activates his ability. Now if he wants to use different "Filters" like Thermal Vision, or night vision, he has to concentrate. However on default is the floating vision. Now he opens his eyes and with this floating vision he's allowed to see wherever he wants. So when Dustin describes himself floating through walls or soaring through the skies, he's only referring to his vision, it's not really an out of body experience at all. It's just his vision (what he sees) is different. I hope that cleared up some confusion. |

The Nurse and the Job Sunday went without much going on since Dustin didn’t use his ability again. Dustin woke up early again and got ready for school. “So today’s the day you go to work,” Paula said. “It is and what are you doing up so early?” Dustin asked. Paula merely smiled and walked away. After an hour, Dustin’s mom and dad got up. Dustin sat on the couch waiting for the bus. “Dustin I’m going to pick you up at school,” Dustin’s mom said. “So I can take you directly to Freebie’s.” “I’ll be waiting,” Dustin said. After a few more minutes the bus came and picked up Dustin and Paula. Dustin noticed that the other passengers were being nice to Paula. Paula smiled and looked at Dustin for a moment. Dustin sat down and began to think about school and his job after school. When he got to school everyone was talking to Paula and Dustin shook his head and smiled. Dustin walked through the halls and then he saw Cindy. Cindy smiled and waved to Dustin and Dustin smiled and waved back. Dustin couldn’t stop smiling throughout the first class. He was en route to the next class when a sharp pain in his head caused him to fall to his knees. “Dustin,” a voice said worried. Dustin looked to see Paula picking him up. “Dustin your eyes,” Paula said shocked. Dustin rubbed his eyes and realized they were bleeding. “Let’s get you to the nurse,” Paula said. Dustin was rather confused by the whole situation. When Dustin looked around he saw someone walking away in a strange way he and shook his head. When they got there Cindy gasped when she saw Dustin. “Your eyes are bleeding,” Cindy said. “This is odd, did you experience a sharp pain.” “I did,” Dustin said. “It- My head hurt really bad.” “Your head?” Cindy asked. “Thanks Paula, you can go to class now.” “Will he be okay?” Paula asked. “Yeah it’s nothing,” Cindy said with a hint of uncertainty. “Okay,” Paula said. “Dustin feel better will you?” Dustin saw Paula leaving. “You lied to her, didn’t you?” Dustin asked. “I know what it is,” Cindy said. “The truth is you will be fine, but it’s likely you’ll experience it again unless I can stop him.” “Him?” Dustin asked. “Oh I mean it,” Cindy said. Cindy got close and wiped Dustin’s eyes. “The same thing happened when I concentrated too hard at home,” Dustin said. “But this came out of nowhere.” “So that’s why it affected the eyes,” Cindy said. “What?” Dustin asked. “Oh nothing,” Cindy said. Cindy continued to wipe Dustin’s eyes. After a few moments Dustin began to pay attention to Cindy and then he smiled. Dustin began to feel her warmth and soon lost concentration. Dustin tried to focus but it was too much. Dustin grabbed Cindy and kissed her on the lips. It took Cindy a few moments before she pushed Dustin away. “DUSTIN,” Cindy yelled. Dustin shook his head and quickly exited the room and walked away as fast as he could. Dustin went to his next class and sat there scarlet red in the face. ‘Oh dang what have I done,’ Dustin thought. The rest of the day was uneventful and Dustin quickly climbed into the minivan after school. “So how was your day?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Pretty uneventful,” Dustin said. Dustin looked and saw Cindy come out of the school building. But Dustin barely looked at her and didn’t she what the reaction of her face was. Dustin’s mom drove off and Dustin sit there replaying the events through his head. “Are you excited about the job?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Sure, I guess,” Dustin said. “I wonder exactly what I have to do though.” “You don’t know?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Well I know what I’m doing when Roy isn’t here,” Dustin said. “But he’s still here, so I’m wondering how that will work out.” “He’ll probably show you what to do and evaluate your performance,” Dustin’s mom said. “Oh by the way your dad and I discussed the game system. We will allow you to play every Sunday for a few hours. After that time and every other time, the game will be off and unplugged.” “Okay,” Dustin said. “I mean truth be told your dad and I are curious as to what the hidden task is,” Dustin’s mom said. “So I take it, that means I’m the only one going to play,” Dustin said. Dustin’s mom laughed and slightly nodded. After a few minutes Dustin was dropped off and walked in. “Dustin glad you could make it,” Roy said. “Today will just be a practice day. I will teach you what needs to be done when you’re working, and we’ll see how well you do.” After an hour Dustin got the hang of things. “So Dustin I looked up on the internet,” Roy said. “And I found this device that is said to counter the effects of hypnosis. They look like headphones and apparently what happens is they emit a unique sound that allows you to focus more. This increase in focus apparently makes it impossible for you to get hypnotized. I don’t know if it’s true or not but I ordered one for you.” “Really?” Dustin asked. “Thanks Roy.” “No problem,” Roy said. “It was really cheap too.” The door opened and Dustin’s eyes widened when he saw who apparently was Amy. “Amy Tirsch what are you doing here?” Roy asked. Amy looked at Dustin with an angry look. She suddenly smiled and looked at Roy. “I just want to get to know my future colleague better,” Amy said. “Dustin is it?” “It is,” Dustin said slightly nervous. “Can I talk to you privately?” Amy said. “If that’s alright with you Roy.” “Go ahead, Dustin’s doing a good job,” Roy said. “I guess he could take a break.” Amy walked outside and Dustin slowly walked outside. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Amy said angrily. “If this was what I think it’s about,” Dustin said. “It was purely accidentally.” “Oh ho,” Amy said rudely. “So chalk one up to hormones.” Dustin stared at Amy in absolute disbelief. “I’m only going to say this once. Stay away from my cousin. I don’t care how much pain your in, I don’t care if she can save your life. You stay the hell away from her, you got it.” “Yes I do,” Dustin said nervously. Amy nodded and walked away and Dustin walked back into the store with Roy laughing. “What’s funny?” Dustin asked. Roy shook his head and couldn’t stop laughing. “I overheard what was going on,” Roy said. “And it sounded like you did something to Cindy.” Roy continued to laugh, Dustin just shook his head and sighed. “I hope that device is useful beyond hypnosis,” Dustin said. ********************* Author's Note: I apologize if anyone feels any discomfort for any reason, but I couldn't help myself. Eventually you'll know why. But right now too Spoilerish. |

Two Hidden Items Per Sunday Part One It was an exhausting week for Dustin as he avoided using his ability to prevent any accidents from occurring and work was difficult. “Just wait until around Christmas,” Roy said before he left for Connecticut. Dustin was sitting in his room Saturday night contemplating whether he should use his ability again or not. ‘I don’t think my bleeding has anything to do with my ability,’ Dustin thought. ‘But I just can’t risk getting physically hurt at school. Especially with what Amy said.’ Dustin sat in his bed and yawned. Dustin looked over and saw Paula walk in with a big grin on her face. “So is it true?” Paula asked. “Is what true?” Dustin asked despite knowing the answer. “You know,” Paula said smiling. “I’m not going to answer unless your specific,” Dustin said smiling back. Paula rolled her eyes. “Fine,” Paula said. “Is it true you kissed Nurse Tirsch?” Paula asked. “Ho ho,” Dustin’s dad said coming in. “What did I just hear?” Dustin slightly groaned and glared at Paula. “Oh nothing,” Paula said. “I was just asking Dustin if he made out with the school nurse on Monday.” “Is this true?” Dustin’s dad said really interested. “Monday,” Dustin said. “It’s a blur, I’ll I remember is it being rather uneventful.” “Fine,” Dustin’s dad said. “I won’t pry, teenagers are allowed to have some secrets.” Dustin’s dad smiled and slightly laughed as he left the room. “So did you?” Paula asked. “Go away,” Dustin said. “Fine,” Paula said getting up. “But before you do,” Dustin said. “How come you didn’t tell them?” “What that you apparently bleed from the eyes?” Paula asked. “Cindy talked to me later and she was pretty adamant that there was nothing wrong with you. She was a bit flustered though I wonder if that had something to do with-.” “Okay you can go now,” Dustin said interrupting Paula. Paula laughed as she left the room. “I’m never going to hear the end of this.” Dustin felt tired and fell asleep. Dustin woke up the next morning to the aroma of food. Paula came in and shrugged her shoulders. “I guess I don’t have to wake you up,” Paula said. “Shame too.” Paula started to smile and left the room. “Oh great,” Dustin said. Dustin got up and walked to the kitchen and saw there was some food. Dustin smiled and ate some breakfast. Paula stretched and there was a horn and Paula ran out. “Hold it,” Dustin’s dad said. “Where are you going?” “Oh just to the movies and stuff,” Paula said. Dustin’s dad shook his head and Paula left. “So Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “How about now?” “The Labyrinth of Puzzles?” Dustin asked. Dustin’s mom nodded her head. Dustin sat on the couch and looked ready. “Okay so you have three hours,” Dustin’s mom said sitting near the outlet. “I’ll be here just in case.” Dustin turned it on and started playing the other games. Dustin was finding it difficult to locate the hidden items. After awhile he noticed something and quickly clicked on it. “Congratulations you found the eighth hidden item,” the computer said. Dustin smiled and looked at the clock and gasped as he saw it move quickly forward and backwards. “No need to do drugs,” Dustin said. “Labyrinth of Puzzles is all you need to get that special high feeling.” After a few moments Dustin’s mom laughed in slow motion. Dustin saw her slowly unplug the game and suddenly Dustin saw her near him. “Are you okay?” Dustin’s mom asked. Dustin looked at the screen and saw that he acquired a ninth hidden item before it faded to black. “It feels like someone is toying with my mind,” Dustin said. “It’s okay I’m glad you unplugged it. “You were acting weird, I had no choice,” Dustin’s mom said. “I’m not sure I like this, it scares me.” “Don’t worry,” Dustin said. “I only need six more, so if I get two hidden items per Sunday then it will only be three more Sundays.” “Okay but go rest,” Dustin’s mom said. Dustin nodded and walked to his room and he sighed when he saw another post it. “It’s a shame that the device has side effects,” Dustin said reading the note aloud. “It would be nice if you told me who you were, and at least ask before spying on me.” Dustin climbed on his bed and felt tired so he fell asleep. Dustin woke up and realized it was early and got out of bed. He saw another post it note and sighed. “Let me guess,” Dustin said. “Who I am is not important nor should you want to know.” Dustin got up and read the note and his eyes widened. “You’re not ready,” the note said. “Close enough,” Dustin said. Dustin sighed and went to take a shower. ********************* Author's Note: Nothing to say but you'll learn some stuff soon. |

Apology Dustin got on the bus and closed his eyes. After a few moments the bus stopped and Dustin looked to see that he was at school. He got off and started to head to class. “Dustin,” a voice said. Dustin turned and saw it was Cindy. “I need to speak with you.” ‘Oh great Amy’s going to kill me,’ Dustin thought. ‘Maybe I could use my ability to find a good place to hide.’ Dustin followed Cindy into her office and she sat down and she looked kind of sad. “Cindy, are you okay?” Dustin asked. “Actually no,” Cindy said. “I just found out what Amy did to you last week, how she threatened you.” “She’s just trying to protect you,” Dustin said. “I know but she didn’t know who you were,” Cindy said. “She just knew you went to school. That’s her problem she assumes I need help when I don’t need it.” “It’s my fault,” Dustin said. “I shouldn’t be so attracted to you.” Cindy chuckled and sighed. “I just want to apologize for her behavior,” Cindy said. “Actually I should apologize,” Dustin said. “I left here too quickly as if I was escaping punishment. I’m sorry I kissed you.” Cindy smiled and laughed. “You can go if you want,” Cindy said. Dustin left Cindy’s office and looked back. “That was weird,” Dustin said smiling. “But hopefully now things won’t be a problem.” Dustin walked to class and the rest of the school day was uneventful. Dustin got into the minivan after school. “So how was your day?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Just the usual,” Dustin said. Dustin looked at the school and saw Cindy. She had a smile on her face and for a moment Dustin thought she was staring at him. Dustin silently laughed and shook his head. After a few minutes they reached Freebie’s Gaming Store. Dustin got out and Amy was waiting for him. “Thanks mom,” Dustin said. Dustin’s mom nodded and drove off. Dustin walked up to her and he heard Amy sigh. “I know we got on the wrong foot,” Amy said sighing. “But I think I crossed the line the other week.” “You were just protecting Cindy that’s all,” Dustin said. “So you’re sixteen?” Amy asked causing Dustin to nod. “I guess in that case she can take care of herself.” Dustin and Amy walked into the store. “Oh right a package came for you,” Amy said. “I think it was that thing Roy ordered you before he left. Dustin walked to the package and saw that it was open. “And you opened it?” Dustin asked. “I apologize,” Amy said. “I was really curious.” Dustin noticed a change in Amy’s demeanor. “So are we cool?” Dustin asked. Amy looked like she was thinking she smiled and nodded. “Yeah I guess we are,” Amy said. “I hope this doesn’t sound offensive but you seem really nice when you’re being nice.” “And you and Cindy make a cute couple,” Amy said. Dustin laughed and paused. “I’m sorry what,” Dustin said. Amy laughed and hit Dustin in the arm. “Well my shift is over so good luck,” Amy said. Amy walked out of the store and got in her car and drove off. “That was Amy?” Dustin asked laughing. Dustin opened the box and pulled out some headphones. Dustin looked around but didn’t see who made the device. Dustin put them on and turned the device on. There was a slight humming but after a few moments it was gone. The rest of the day Dustin was completely focused on the job. Dustin got off and took the device off. “Wow,” Dustin said. “This device works well. I mean I felt completely focused.” Dustin saw the minivan coming from the distance he turned around to make sure the door was closed and there was a post it note. “Wait until you play the Labyrinth of Puzzles with the headphones,” Dustin said. Dustin shook his head and got in the minivan when it stopped. ****************************** Author's Note: Um...yeah. On an entirely different note, I know this isn't Part two, but don't worry, things do happen between Sundays. |

I Hope I'm not putting too much out there all at once ******************** Two Hidden Items Per Sunday Part Two It was Friday the twenty eighth of October and school was almost out for the week. Dustin sat in class and yawned. The bell rang and Dustin got up. “Another day at work,” Dustin said. Dustin started to leave the school when something caught his eye. A post it note was on the handle. “Go see Cindy,” the note said. “It only take a minute. Give or take.” Dustin walked to Cindy’s office and she was sitting there writing something on a piece of paper. She looked up and smiled. “Oh hey Dustin what are you doing here?” Cindy asked. “I just had a feeling,” Dustin said as he pocketed the post it note. “Well if you want to do something,” Cindy said. “You can help me to my car. I sprained my knee.” “Should you be driving?” Dustin asked. Cindy looked and thought for a moment. “Why do you ask?” Cindy asked. “Well wouldn’t it be safer if you came with me, I mean my mom is dropping me off at Freebie’s Gaming Store, and well Amy could take you home.” Cindy smiled and nodded. “Sure,” Cindy said. “I’m sure my car can wait until my knee feels better.” Dustin helped her to the minivan. “So who is this?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Oh Cindy is the school nurse,” Dustin said. “Her cousin works at Freebie’s. Since we’re heading there, I thought it be easier since her knee is sprained.” “Okay sounds good to me,” Dustin’s mom said. After a few moments they were at Freebie’s. Amy came out and helped Cindy to the car. Amy walked up to Dustin. “Like I said,” Amy said. “Cute couple.” Amy ran to the car and got in and she quickly drove off. “Are we sure that’s Amy?” Dustin asked. “She’s kind of acting like my sister.” Dustin thought for a moment and shook his head. “Paula and Amy, how would they know each other?” The rest of the day was uneventful except for some customers, and Dustin got home, ate and fell asleep. “Wake up smooch smooch,” a voice said. Dustin rolled over and ignored it. “Come on wake up,” the voice said. “It’s me Cindy maybe we can make out or something.” Dustin quickly got up and saw Paula laughing on the floor. “You know Paula,” Dustin said. “That could be a sign of immaturity, are you sure you’re my older sister?” Paula stopped laughing and glared at Dustin. “Oh shut up,” Paula said. She got up and left the room. “So it’s Saturday,” Dustin said. “Better do some homework before three.” Dustin did his homework and went to Freebie’s and saw Amy about to leave. “Hey Amy do you know my sister, Paula?” Dustin asked. “What can’t hear you,” Amy said smiling. “I got to get going though.” Amy left and Dustin sighed. After work Dustin went to bed and woke up at five in the morning. Dustin sat down in the couch and stared at the television screen. Dustin sighed and looked for the headphones. He put them on and after a few moments he felt very focused. “I should wait but I have nothing else to do,” Dustin said. He turned on the device and suddenly everything around him felt slower. Dustin got one of the hidden items when his head started to hurt. Dustin’s vision got blurry and when Dustin rubbed his eyes they were wet. He looked closely and saw they were bleeding. “What’s going on?” Dustin asked. Dustin did something on the controller and he heard a slow voice. “Congratulations,” the voice said. “On finding the eleventh item. Only four remain.” Dustin crawled to the outlet and unplugged the game. Dustin thought he heard laughing before he fell unconscious. Dustin woke up and saw that he was in the hospital and he saw a man laughing. “It’s about time you woke up,” the man said. “That was a lovely performance by the way. I never thought you could pull off that son of a bitch miracle. I mean blood is in your eyes, and you manage to find the eleventh hidden item. Absolutely miraculous.” “Who are you?” Dustin said slightly angry. “Chill man,” the man said. “I’m on your side, consider me your guardian angel.” “I asked for your name not your occupation,” Dustin said. “You do have a temper when the occasion calls for it,” the man said. “If you must know, my name is Hayden Camille. I have a unique ability of blending into things.” “So you’re the guy who’s been stalking me and my sister for the last month,” Dustin said. “Not really,” Hayden said. “Look that game system should only affect people with abilities. I had no idea it could affect someone like Paula.” “Like Paula?” Dustin asked. “What do you mean?” “If I must,” Hayden said. “Your mother and father both have a unique genetic structure. And one out every four children they produce is special. In this case it was you and not your sister. But I guess the game didn’t know that and affected Paula because of her genetics. She may never manifest an ability but she is susceptible to the device.” “What does the device do?” Dustin asked. “And why is the hidden task so important.” “Questions, question, questions,” Hayden said. “You know enough for now.” Hayden disappeared and Dustin sighed. Dustin’s mom came in and shook her head. “No more Dustin,” Dustin’s mom said. “You don’t understand,” Dustin said. “It wasn’t the game’s fault, remember my eye problems occurred before we got the Labyrinth of Puzzles.” “That’s right,” Dustin’s mom said. “The concussion, it happened before we got the game. But why are eyes still screwed up?” “I think I’m putting to much pressure on my eyes,” Dustin said. “And a reasonable deduction it is,” a woman said coming in. “We actually had no idea why a person would be bleed from his eyes, but too much pressure makes sense. I think when you aren’t using your eyes, you need to close them and rest. That means no television, no computer, and no other electronics of that nature. I want you to come back in a week and we’ll see what’s going on with them.” Dustin’s mom took him to the minivan and started to take him home. “Dustin are you sure it’s not the game?” Dustin’s mom asked. “I’m quite sure,” Dustin said. “Since I've had these bloody eyes away from the game.” “And you never told me or your father?” Dustin’s mom asked angrily. “I honestly never thought it was a big deal,” Dustin said. “The first time it happened I was concentrating too hard.” “Concentrating on what?” Dustin’s mom said. “A homework problem,” Dustin said. “I was trying to figure out the answer. But I guess I went overboard.” “And the next time?” Dustin’s mom asked. “It was at school,” Dustin said. “I had a sharp pain in my head and the next thing I knew there was blood in my eyes. Paula helped me to the Nurse’s office.” “Paula knew?” Dustin’s mom asked. “Cindy the nurse said it wasn’t a big deal,” Dustin said. “In fact she thought it was just a one time deal. She was sure it wouldn’t happen again.” “And the next time it happened?” Dustin’s mom asked. “When I was playing the game,” Dustin said. “I had a device that could help me focus, I guess the combination of the headphones and the game was too much.” “Well until the doctor says your fine,” Dustin’s mom said. “No more Labyrinth of Puzzles, on top of the fact you didn’t wait until your dad and I was awake.” “I’m sorry I was really bored,” Dustin said. Dustin got home and saw a post it note and read it. ‘As for your eyes bleeding?’ The note read. ‘The first time was your fault, the second time, well not just yet and the third time was because of the focus headphones. Because of your ability, you need to be careful and not over pressure your eyes. Your ability is useful don’t waste it getting blind.’ Dustin sighed and went to bed. ************ Author's Note: This one is fairly long (while some are short), it's just how I "write." Anyway yeah a lot of information is revealed. And if you're seeing the subtle hint, then yeah. |

Career Fair Dustin got up and took a shower the next morning and got ready for school. Dustin sat down at the kitchen table. “Are you sure you want to go to school?” Dustin’s dad asked. “You’ve had a rough Sunday.” “I’m fine,” Dustin said. “A little tired but all in all I’m fine. Besides if I skip school I might as well skip work, and I don’t think Roy would approve.” “Okay then,” Dustin’s dad said. “But call your mother if you aren’t feeling well.” Dustin and Paula left the house and Paula laughed. “Yeah right Nurse Cindy,” Paula said. “Paula don’t blame her,” Dustin said. “Besides its my fault for having eye problems.” “Don’t eavesdrop,” Paula said. Dustin sort of laughed as he got on the bus. He sat down and looked out the window. After what felt like a long time Dustin was at school. As he got off he was shocked to see Cindy. “Cindy?” Dustin asked. She looked a bit sad and then she sort of smiled. “May I speak with you alone?” Cindy asked. Dustin followed her to her office and she sat down. “I’m sorry about what happened,” Cindy said. “I didn’t know you had a problem with your eyes. I should’ve realized after that concussion but I didn’t think it was a problem.” “No its okay, actually its my fault,” Dustin said. “The doctor said I over pressured my eyes. I don’t think it was anyone else’s fault. But I’m curious, you seemed to know what caused it before.” Cindy’s eyes widened and she shook her head. “No,” Cindy said pushing Dustin out. “I was wrong, what I thought was only temporary.” Cindy pushed Dustin out and the door closed and Dustin stood shocked. “Perhaps I am not ready,” Dustin said. Dustin walked to class and sat down and yawned. “Today is a special day,” the teacher said. “Or should I say week? Anyway this whole week the gymnasium is holding a Career Fair, so when you have a chance I want you to head down there. And this isn’t optional, because next week, I’ll want a two page report on the career you chose.” Most of the class groaned and the teacher folded his arms. “Yes I know this sucks,” the teacher said. “But it is never too early to plan your future. And besides who knows what will be at the career fair. You could get some free stuff. But don’t get your hopes up.” The teacher then droned on about the career fair and Dustin was only slightly interested. ‘The Career Fair?’ Dustin thought. ‘I never thought about it but maybe I can find something that is suited to my ability.’ After class was over Dustin headed to the gymnasium and he was stopped by Principal Evans. “I don’t think so Dustin,” Principal Evans. “You’ll have to come in at lunch because you have class right now.” “Shouldn’t we come in when we want?” Dustin asked. “I mean lunch really isn’t that long, and I doubt it’ll be open after school.” Principal Evans looked deep in thought. “Well you do make an interesting point,” Principal Evans said. “Get permission from your teacher and I’ll let you look around.” Dustin walked to his next class and saw the teacher. “Miss Crenshaw,” Dustin said. “I was wondering if I could go the career fair.” Dustin’s teacher looked at him and shook her head. “My, my,” Miss Crenshaw said. “Never thought I’d see the day a student willingly wanted to go to the career fair.” Miss Crenshaw pulled out a piece of paper and wrote on it. “When your done skipping class,” Miss Crenshaw whispered. “Come back and I’ll give you your homework.” Dustin nodded and headed back to the gymnasium and walked inside. Dustin was surprised to see so many booths. Dustin looked around and then something caught his eye. A man was sleeping in a booth and when Dustin came closer he smiled. “Of course,” Dustin said. Dustin found what he was looking for and slowly walked towards the booth. ‘With my ability,’ Dustin thought. ‘No doubt I would make a great detective.’ Dustin reached the booth and the sleeping man woke. “Welcome,” the man said. “I’m Detective Fuller, how may I interest you.” “Oh I’m Dustin,” Dustin said. “I think I’m interested in becoming a detective.” Detective Fuller laughed and sighed. “Look,” Detective Fuller said. “I’m going to be honest here, it’s going to be rather difficult to become a detective.” Dustin looked at the booth and picked up a picture of what appeared to be a crime scene. Dustin closed his eyes and started thinking of his ability. Soon an array of colors appeared and Dustin opened his eyes. ‘Show me what’s wrong in this photo,’ Dustin thought. Suddenly one of the objects in the picture glowed and turned around in the photo. Dustin smiled and closed his eyes and opened them and everything was normal. “Shouldn’t this object be facing this way?” Dustin asked handing the photo to Detective Fuller. If Detective Fuller had liquid in his mouth he would’ve sprayed Dustin but instead he ran out of the gymnasium. Dustin didn’t know what to do so he exited the gym and went back to class. The rest of the day was uneventful and Dustin went to work and had many customers. When Dustin got home there was a post it note and Dustin read it. “Impressive display of your ability,” the note read. “But don’t make your self too suspicious.” Dustin sighed and fell asleep. ************* Author's Note: Don't worry this chapter is fairly important. |

Ultimate Dream Dustin was shocked when he found himself in a large city. Dustin was also shocked that there were no noises. Dustin screamed but nothing came out. Dustin walked around and soon he noticed everything was absolutely still. ‘Is this part of my ability?’ Dustin thought. Dustin looked around and suddenly there was a glowing light in a window. Dustin quickly walked to the building and he went through the building. He climbed the stairs and found a door with the number eleven on it. When he walked through the door he covered his eyes in shock. Dustin uncovered them and he looked uncomfortable. On the bed was a mutilated body of a woman. Dustin shook his head and when a figure caught his eye he jumped. The figure wasn’t moving so Dustin sighed. Suddenly the figure started to move slowly and Dustin moved out of the way. The figure tripped on an object and the thing swiveled around and the figure fell. The figure got up slowly and limped out of the room. Dustin looked at the object and gasped. “Ahh,” Dustin said sweating as he was breathing heavily in bed. He looked at the alarm clock and saw that it was for. Dustin’s eyes were blurry so he slowly walked to the bathroom and he cleaned out his eyes. Dustin continued to breathe heavily and then he walked to the room. “Son of a,” Dustin said. “I did not enjoy that.” Suddenly there was a slight whooshing sound and a man appeared, it was Hayden. “What the hell happened to you?” Hayden asked. “Could you stay out of my room?” Dustin asked angrily. “Sh,” Hayden said. “Don’t wake your parents, or your sister. Again what happened?” “I had a dream,” Dustin said. “You must remember the photo I looked at yesterday.” “Yes, the photo that caused Detective Fuller to run the hell out of there,” Hayden said. “I think I saw what happened after the killer killed the woman,” Dustin said. Hayden had a strange look on his face and gasped. “Hold on did you just say you saw what happened?” Hayden asked. “Yeah the man or woman was walking or running away and the person slipped on an object and fell. The person limped out of there really fast.” “I think you solved the mutilator case,” Hayden said. “Your ability is useful, I just hope Ms. Toad doesn’t find out.” “Ms. Toad?” Dustin asked causing Hayden to make some noises. “Why does that name sound so familiar?” Dustin looked at Hayden but he was gone. “You know spying on me and possibly my sister is a really sick perversion,” Dustin said. “Might want to think about that.” Dustin laid back and tried to fall asleep but couldn’t. After a long time the alarm went off and Dustin sighed. Dustin took a shower and sat on the couch unable to close his eyes. After another long time Dustin got on the bus and went to school. He got off to be greeted by Detective Fuller. “How’d you know?” Detective Fuller asked. “You were right, it appears the killer, I mean it appears that the object was in the wrong position. As if someone tripped on it. So how’d you know?” “I guess being a detective isn’t too hard,” Dustin said. “Is it?” Dustin started to walk off. “Hold on,” Detective Fuller. “Look I’m sorry, I was being a complete ass yesterday. Let me give you some brochures of what you have to do to become a law enforcement person. Like a detective or a something. Swing by the career fair after school.” Dustin walked away and went to class. Dustin sat in class when suddenly he noticed a post it note. Dustin rolled his eyes and read it. “If I tell you anything,” the note said. “You have to play the hidden task, and you have to find a way to use your ability perfectly without any side effects. Only then will I contact you again. For now, I’ll leave you alone. But be careful, Cindy isn’t who think she is.” Dustin looked at the note in confusion and eventually ignored it. After school, Dustin headed to the career fair when there was loud scream. Dustin ran into the gymnasium and nearly passed out. Detective Fuller was sitting in a chair with his throat slit. And in blood were the words that caused Dustin to faint. “Find me now Brainiac.” Dustin opened his eyes and saw Cindy. Dustin started to smile. “What’s wrong?” Dustin asked. “Well aside from a murder taking place, you fainted in the gymnasium,” Cindy said. Dustin got up and realized he was in Cindy’s office. “Oh no,” Dustin said. “Detective Fuller.” “You knew him?” Cindy asked. “That’s enough Ms. Tirsch,” a man said entering the office. “May I speak to Dustin privately?” “Of course,” Cindy said. Cindy left and the man sat down and seemed to glare at Dustin. “I’m Lieutenant Marshall,” the man said. “I was in charge of Detective Fuller, I was in charge of the bureau that Fuller was from. How do you suppose he was killed?” “I don’t understand,” Dustin said. “Let me break it down,” Lt. Marshall said. “You talked to him yesterday, and apparently you gave him a clue to a four year cold case involving the mutilator. Then you talked to him earlier today. And then he dies and the words ‘Find me now Brainiac” are written in his blood. Brainiac the same nickname your sister gave you because of your intelligence. So again how do you think he was killed?” Dustin noticed Lt. Marshall’s angry behavior and Dustin sighed. “I think it was the mutilator who killed him,” Dustin said. “That’s what were thinking,” Lt. Marshall said. “But not only that he knows of you, so how do you propose we deal with the situation?” Dustin thought for a moment and sighed. “There is one way,” Dustin said. “But it’s not going to make sense.” “Talk,” Lt. Marshall said. “Ever heard of the Labyrinth of Puzzles?” Dustin asked. Lt. Marshall nodded his head. “All I need are four more items, until I can unlock the hidden task.” “No kidding,” Lt. Marshall said. “But how does this help us with the mutilator?” “If I’m a target,” Dustin said. “Then I can distract myself by playing the game, and maybe draw him to me.” “No,” Lt. Marshall. “I don’t want anyone else dying because of this sick f-.” “No listen,” Dustin said. “You guys will be stationed around the house and the house will be very bright inside. If there’s any problems, you go in there and hopefully apprehend him.” “I don’t like this but we’ll give it a shot,” Lt. Marshall. “Give us a few days to set it up. For now your family is safe. I’ll take you to your place of work.” Lt. Marshall took him to Freebie’s gaming store. ‘What the hell is going on?’ Dustin thought to himself. ******************* Author's Note: Things are definitely kicking it up a notch, For now though, I'm taking a break (from posting). |
