Okay, so you've decided what you want your character to be! Whether it's a Rogue, a Wizard, or a Paladin, you still need some way to determine how powerful they are. Well, if your DM chooses the Point Buy system, then it pretty much guarantees a balanced game. This system doesn't allow characters to have any two stats below 10, or any one stat below 8. Now, when the system is selected, your DM will tell you if you are having a Low, Average, or High Level campaign, and this dictates how many points you get.

So, once you've determined what type of campaign it is, you get a pool of points. For High Level campaigns it's 32, for Average Level campaigns it's 22, and for Low Level campaigns, it's 12. Each character starts with five stats at 10, and one stat at 8. Each time you want to increase a stat, you spend one point. Each point between 13 and 16 costs two. Advancing to 17 costs 3, and advancing to 18 costs four.

For example. Say I have a Human Fighter in a High Level Campaign. I have 32 points. I choose to start out with this.

Str: 10
Con: 10
Dex: 10
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 10

Fighters want high Con and Strength, so I increase both of those first. I want 18 Strength right off the bat. Each increase up to 13 costs 1 (3), The three increases from 13 to 16 cost 2 (6), getting 17 is 3, and 18 is 4. So that costs a total of 16.

Point Pool: 16
Str: 18 (16 Spent.)
Con: 10
Dex: 10
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 10

You continue on that way, adjusting scores as you go; ending with the following.
Str: 18 (16 Spent.)
Con: 16 (9 Spent.)
Dex: 14 (5 Spent)
Int: 10
Wis: 8
Cha: 12 (2 Spent)
