Day 1 of 2: 1,046 Well it had finally been decided. Sensing that Aiden had passed into the hereafter was the final nail in the coffin for Proto. He had to become stronger, like the champions of old. If he wanted to gather powerful allies then he himself would need to prove his strength and what better way to do that than to challenge one of earth’s greatest warriors to a sparring match. The real question was which fighter to challenge? It would have to be someone famous, the bigger the better in fact. Even if Proto didn’t win at least his name would be spread around sufficiently. It couldn’t be Tien, Roshi, Krillin or even Gohan; I don’t think Proto has it in him to fight a former teacher, at least not without a better reason. Mumbling about heaven, Proto would stop every now and then to check his surrounding s and make sure he hadn’t gotten lost again before continuing to ponder his dilemma. Of course! The answer hit Proto like one of Rosencrantz’ attacks, it took awhile to land one but it sure did hurt. The legendary super saiyan fighter Goku was the perfect candidate. He was always at the very forefront of some of the galaxies most memorable conflicts and with his good natured love of fighting, I’m sure I’ll be able to garner myself a match with him. An even bigger problem suddenly presented itself, how in the heaven was I supposed to beat Goku? Thus my training began, for several days I trained with rest or distraction of any kind. Focusing my efforts on control and balance, I recalled the many lessons I learned while at Master Roshi’s school as well as the deeper truths I was able to realize about myself in my time spent meditating with Tien on the mountain peaks. I did what I could to prepare for the match against the legendary hero; the only thing I knew for sure that he was capable of was using the old turtle hermit’s technique, the Kamehameha attack. Using the multi-form skill that had been passed onto me by Tien, I practiced over and over again, throwing beam after beam of energy towards myself and trying desperately to either dodge or absorb its power. Several times resulted in the near removal of one or more of my hands, but I’m fully capable of making minor repairs to myself so I was not concerned. After many days of such exercises I returned to a nearby pond to clean myself up, while I know that time is as precious as it is abstract, sometimes one can benefit from a little downtime to properly digest the things we learn. The skills gleaned from my time at Roshi’s school have proved to be a great boon to me. While I cannot guarantee that they will always be so useful, for the time being they remain a huge asset to my already varied set of abilities. Counting the minutes as they pass, I knew that it had to be soon. I decided to get some rest before I headed out to find Goku, I would need all of my strength if I was to stand a chance in the ring with such a titan. It happened again, that terrible nightmare in which I’m faced off against that phantom man whose laugh echoes through my mind like Vincent Price’s thriller laugh. Why does my mind constantly assault me so, confronting me with such overwhelming failure and weakness, only to be given a glimmer of hope of victory and yet I remain unable to see the final outcome of such events. The rest of the night passes by slowly. Fidgeting constantly and unable to return to rest, I tried to analyze the situation but try as I might, I could not force the nightmare out again, it seems to come and go at its own whim. Even more disturbing is the fact that I am unable to access certain areas of my own brain now. It is as though my own mind is somehow changing, evolving almost to the point where it and I are stranger to one another. This disturbs me greatly as who is to say that these changes will not alter me irrevocably. Here I am just now deciding what to do with my existence and for all I am able to determine that existence may not last the week! Before I could pull myself together it was morning again. After taking a quick swim to clear my head I came out of the water refreshed and as ready as I could be for the day ahead of me. I took the opportunity to return to master Roshi and tell him of my plans. I was mostly greeted with laughter from the aging man, but I had to admit, it was more of a jovial nature than an offensive one. He told me I was spot on if I thought that fighting Goku would get my name spread around and that it shouldn’t be too hard to convince him to give me a go. He was even kind enough to give me directions to king Kai’s planet so that I might meet the legend himself. I knew that at some point I would be travelling there anyway to receive my training from king Kai himself, but that day was not today. Perhaps after the situation in the mortal worlds has stabilized a bit I’ll return to seek his tutelage. Arriving at the planet in short order, it took some effort not to crash into the planet as I was pulled in towards it by its intense gravity. I was greeted very quickly by Gohan and some of the others that I had the pleasure of meeting while on our little beach trip last week. They graciously welcomed me to the planet and introduced me around to some of the others that I didn’t know, including Gohan’s mother and wife, beautiful women both. When I inquired about Goku they mentioned he was off training somewhere and wouldn’t return until sometime tomorrow. They offered me a place to stay until then and as I laid down to rest, I only hoped that nightmare would give itself pause for the night. |

Day 2 of 2: 1,104 words Peaceful rest and recuperation, I had almost forgotten how good it felt to get a night such as this. Thankfully, whatever dire circumstance that has caused me to have such terrible nightmares had abated for the night and I was able to get some genuine rest. Come the morning time I awoke to the wonderful smell of breakfast. I’m not talking about cereal and a banana here either; there was a spread of food I hadn’t seen in some time, then again when your feeding a house of saiyans it is almost to be expected. Afterwards some of us went outside to take a bit of a walk and they gave the grand tour of the small planetoid that they lived on. I felt it was best if I explained my intentions from the beginning and after telling everyone of why I had come here, most of them weren’t surprised. “A lot of people come here to fight us.” Gohan spoke. “It isn’t very unusual to have most people fail the first test we use to see if they’re even capable of fighting us… not crashing into the planet face first.” Man was I glad I was able to correct my rapid descent before having that happen to me. “Now you’ve already passed the second test that we require of any challengers, you’ve trained with at least two of us. See we need to be able to observe you for a bit so that we can tell just where you’re at as so to give you the best possible match that we can.” “The last test is sort of a tossup; all you have to do is convince whomever you wish to challenge to agree to the match.” We decided to pass the time by having an impromptu soccer game. After setting everything up captains being decided I ended up on Krillin’s team, which doesn’t bother me at all seeing as how the short guy showed me he had plenty of power when he taught me to use the solar flare without burning my own eyes out. With all that settled the game was on! Well games I should say, we ended up spending most of the afternoon (minus lunch of course) kicking that poor ball around. My compliments whoever made the darn thing as it held up like a champion. We decided to have dinner outside, ChiChi noticed that when you could smell dinner from a mile away, Goku tended to show up faster, not to mention it was a lovely night out as usual. Sure enough she was right, just as the large table was finally finished being set with an array of appetizing entrées, the legendary came speeding towards the planet. We could make out his visage in the distance and hear him even before he landed; apparently he was very excited to be back in time for dinner. As the desert dishes were being cleaned from the table, many content sighs escaped the lips of everyone around. As people began taking chairs, plates, etc back into the houses I was able to get a few moments alone with the cheerful warrior. I spoke to him briefly on some of the events that had led me to where I was now and I told him why I had come. “I think that by challenging you, even if I can’t win, I’ll be able to spread my name around as a person to be taken seriously, despite the way I look. When earth was going to be destroyed by an insane namekian with a hard on for imaginary stowaways, all I was able to do was wait to see if I would need to run or not. When the galaxies top fighters came together to test each other’s mettle, try though I might, I barely made it past the first round before giving my all just to be defeated. Since then I’ve learned much and grown stronger and I think it’s now time for me and others like me to accept the responsibility of having this power and use it to stop those who would abuse theirs.” I had been looking down at the ground as I recalled these tales, partly from shame, partly for dramatic effect, this turned out to be a mistake as when I looked up Goku had a puzzled look on his face. “I have no idea what half of that meant.” The cheery man closed his eyes, gave a disconcerting smile, laughed a tiny bit and started rubbing his head. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I’m taking a few days off from training, you got to give the body enough time to recover you know.” With that he walked into the house and I was left to ponder how best to change his mind. Luckily for me, my chance came faster than I could have hoped for. The very next day the girls decided to have a girl’s day out since they had worked so hard cooking all day before. This left some of the guys wondering about dinner, which they promptly solved by going out to eat. Well Goku had overslept quite a bit and when he rose to the smell of an empty house with no food, he began running around looking for everyone. Once hit went outside, he found me standing over a small fire, roasting a large shank of beef and slowly basting and seasoning it. The man was nearly intoxicated by the smell and came drifting over. I explained to him that most of the others had gone out for the day and wouldn’t be returning for some time, though I’m not sure how much of what I said made it through. Eventually he spoke up “He pal, www would you mind sharing a little of that? It smells SOOO good.” Here was my opportunity and I sure as heaven took it. I told him the deal; I’d cook to his satisfaction if he’d satisfy my hunger for a friendly match. Either because he realized that my mind was made up or possible that hungry that he didn’t care, he accepted. By the time I was done cooking and he was done eating people had started to trickle back towards the planet (though luckily for me they weren’t hungry at the moment). We took a little time to digest and once everyone had returned we decided to begin. What better than spar under the moonlight, surrounded by friends to start a new page in life. Wish me luck, I just realized the hard part is actually staring me in the face. |
