Day one of five: 1,057 words I had begun to think that heaven was merely confined to this small area of planet at the end of snake way, at least until king kai told me about all the other places one could go visit. Hearing that was all I needed, there was more knowledge to be gained and I wasn’t going to be gaining any of it here, not right now anyway. Making my way through the clouds I wondered about all the other people of heaven, about just how many have died of the great expanse of time and just how many of them made it here safely. My thoughts turned to all the wide open spaces, dotting the horizon were what appeared to be buildings though they had to be quite far apart from one another to be dots at this distance. I couldn’t help but notice that one building in particular didn’t look like the others; it looked like it was of an older design and was ornately decorated with many motifs of battle. I left it for now, I wanted to see more of what was around before I stopped to check anything out, but I’d make a mental note of such a building and come back later. The readings I was getting from all these places were all over the map, one minute everything seems normal and the next, there’s energy everywhere and it’s like being intoxicated by it all. It is a very strange place indeed, then again, I should be dead so who am I to judge. I saw a great many things while I was out and about that day, families reunited with ancestors from centuries past, harmony amongst the people of heaven and even some of the fighters of legend that I had heard so much about. I had already met and trained with Tien and I could never have imagined being alive during the same time as fighters like him, everything I can do is a proverbial drop in the bucket compared to his most basic abilities. Even seeing all the marvels that were before me one thing still stood out in my mind, that building I had passed from before. I decided to rest up before heading there, believe it or not, night still falls in heaven. I have no idea whether or not these people even need to sleep or rather if their somehow simply existing in the same fashion that they did in life out of habit, but the sun sets and so do the people here. I thought I may as well play along; I am a guest here after all, so I presumed it would not be received well if I came calling in the middle of the night. Something that was a bit unnerving, there aren’t any stars to gaze at, I mean it makes perfect sense if you think about it, why would there be any stars, but I do so miss gazing up at them and getting lost in my own processes. Ah well, I suppose not even heaven is perfect… The following morning I inspected myself and ran the usual diagnostics and then began my trip to the mysterious building that looked more like a temple than a house. Upon closer examination of the area it was determined that a great many people lived there, the sounds coming from within reminded me of the training simulations I had been programmed with and so I opened the front gates with little cause for concern. When I entered I was greeted by the confused stares of at least 3 dozen people of various species and as I closed the doors behind me several of their mouths dropped open. It appeared as though they were in the middle of some formalized training sequence as an instructor began yelling at the lot of them to get back into position, straighten up and stop looking away from him. Finally one of the people who had been walking near the gate spoke up to me. “How did you d d d d do that?” he stuttered politely. “Well it’s a door isn’t it? That’s what it’s supposed to do.” I shot him a re-affirming smile as I looked up at the man. “You don’t understand I’m afraid, it takes ten men to open those doors, ten men for EACH door.” He became more and more agitated as I contemplated an answer that would satisfy him. He seemed unable to accept that I had simply pushed it open with my hands and I was having difficulty coming up with any other way to explain it, as it turns out, I’m not a very good liar. “Don’t worry now son, I think it’s time you ran along and finished your chores while I talk to our new guest.” An older man placed his hand on the shoulder of the human I was talking with and with just a few words the man went along his way carrying what seemed like buckets of water into the building. He wasn’t very tall, in fact he was about the same size as I am and his beard was quite long, it was contrasted well by the fancy looking sunglasses that the man wore and the walking stick he had in his right hand. He seemed to be full of contradictions this man, but as he silently smiled at me I couldn’t help but feel like some sort of display. I tried my best to hide the gems in the palms of my hands, I wasn’t sure what he’d take me for and the last thing I wanted right now was a building full of angry people chasing me around heaven, it just doesn’t look good on the permanent record. “Don’t worry kid, it might not seem like it, but we’re all the same here, all students and all empty cups simply waiting to be filled with the nectar of knowledge. You look like a good study and class has already started for today so I suggest you get yourself a room in the bunkhouse and hurry into line before you miss too much.” With a toothy grin and a laugh he kept walking past me and I ran to the bunkhouse to place my things down and needless to say… I got the top bunk. |

Day two of five: 1,072 words Running outside I took my place in line in one of the back rows and did what I could to follow the instructor’s commands. Despite not having been told what his orders meant, it only took a small amount of time to observe my fellow students and place their movements to his words, thus solving my problem. Based on my calculations, this particular regimen is designed to increase the students balance and coordination as well as the strength of their joints. It was a fairly complex morning of training and I must admit, I was already impressed at what was going on here. In truth it wasn’t anything new to me, but for new students to jump right into something like this only heightens my expectations about what the more advanced training looks like. Lunch was soon served, despite my predictions we actually went inside and sat down to eat rather than having food brought out to us for convenience. It was a simple, but well balanced meal of bread, a bean paste and a vegetable assortment. There was even a fruit bowl passed around but something even more interesting caught my eye. It was the atmosphere around the hall where we were eating, it was some quiet, somber monastery like I had imagined. Instead it was filled with a gambit of human emotions and experiences. There was a group of people trying to throw pieces of bread into one another’s mouths from increasing distances, there was lively conversation at almost every table, people frequently just got up and moved about the room to mingle with one another, there was even a young couple kissing at one of the tables near the wall. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of such good natured revelry; it reminded me of the old fraternity house of earth’s colleges. As a welcome celebration several of the students picked up the bench I was sitting on and toted me about the room as a sort of clapping music was made, they had a little difficulty at first, but they chalked it up to the bench being heavier than it looked so I kept my mouth shut. Being one of the smallest there they took to calling me “little one” and I didn’t seem to mind, my programming tells me that a nickname is a sign of affection and an attempt at forming a more personal bond so I accepted it without remorse. Once the bell for lunch had sounded, everyone’s mood became that of a dutiful student again, many people ran off into the buildings of the compound, but I returned to the line as I was instructed and we once again began our exercises. Taking a slightly different approach, we started off much slower than before and seemed to gradually work our way up to quite a fervent pace. I noticed several of the others sweating and panting after a while and eventually we finished our days regimen. There was a short break before we returned to our bunks to rest, the men assigned to clean the area had just mopped and we didn’t want to ruin the floors so very soon so we took to playing an old earth game. Dodge ball they called it and aptly named it was. There was little time to hear the rules for as soon as someone came back with a large red ball about the size of your head the game had begun! I knew that I could easily win by utilizing the techniques taught to me from throughout the galaxy, but I decide not to, I wanted to play this game as they all did, to enjoy it the way they did and I was not disappointed. I lost about midway through the game, struck by the ball in the knee as I attempted to roll to safety, but I could hardly complain I was laughing so much. We had such a good time that we played until the dinner bell had been rung and we dragged ourselves away from our fun to eat. It was a beautiful meal, freshly steamed rice, thin strips of pork and avocado wrapped in bread, roasted duck and some wonderfully spiced peppers littered my plate. While it may be true that I do not require such things to function, I was graced to be built with a sense of taste and programmed with the ability to feel emotions and so, I greatly enjoy the activity of eating. There are few times I am able to enjoy such simple things and I am happy to have such a time now. There seemed to be less moving around at dinner time, but there was certainly just as much talking going on. Imagine a room filled with people from across the known galaxy all training and living with one another like a family; just think of the stories to be told. Why I even heard a tale from a namekian about how one time the master had gotten so drunk that he spent the entire day teaching class without any pants on, can you believe it? As we began to retire for the night I noticed several more couples than I had originally thought, most of the students who were inside all day had joined us for dinner and were now bunking down for the night. It was rather nice to see so many couples lying down together, they looked rather peaceful and it pleased me to know that there weren’t any restrictions on that sort of thing here. As I lay down as well, I began powering several systems down for the usual diagnostic tests for the evening. It’s a convenient way to keep up appearances that I’m a normal human as well as keep myself in proper condition. Something was off tonight though, as I went through my systems I began to notice an anomaly inside that I couldn’t pin down. It seemed like every time I thought I had it cornered, it moved away to another system. It wasn’t causing any harm, but who knows if that could change. By the time I had given up for the night it was already morning and one of the students was posting something up on the wall for everyone to see so naturally I got up to take a look. Lo and behold, the roster of chores for the day, great. |

Day three of five: 1,099 words I must have arrived after the chores were given out yesterday, but at least this explains why so many people were running around before. My first task was to bring clean water to the kitchen for breakfast, which wasn’t so bad, with my strength it was a mere nuisance. Afterwards I was assigned to a detail of workers to scrub the bunkhouse floors and then finally I had to help with some minor repairs to the roof. Over the past few months the master here has apparently been teaching some of his more advanced students to manipulate energy and let’s just say that a few of them haven’t quite grasped the concepts yet. While I was up there adding new shingles and fixing some of the holes, I couldn’t help myself from peeking in on their classes. They had several dummies set up around the room and most of the students were in some form of meditation as the others continued to attempt to form stable energy beams. I say attempt because they weren’t doing very well. After a few minutes I began neglecting my work and focusing solely on what I was watching, at least I was until that bald headed man with the walking stick from the other day saw me looking in and I got straight back to work. Later that day, before our actual training had started, my instructor told me that I was to report indoors today for some separate classes. At first I thought I might have been in trouble but after beginning the exercises on the first floor I realized that I was actually advancing faster than the other pupils. This training was a bit more intense, gone were the stale movements and instead they had been replaced with a more flexible set of techniques followed by paired practice. It was a simple task for me, all I needed to do was analyze the movements and add them to my own so I did what I could to make sure that my partner had properly understood the movements involved and I even went so far as to let him practice on me to his heart’s content. After some time paired off in this manner, our instructor came around to each group of students to observe and judge their progress. When it came time for our group to display for him, he was equally shocked that both I and my partner had a flawless routine already worked out. Several times he asked us to repeat our performance and each time we obliged, me because it was a simple request to satisfy and my partner mostly because he enjoyed the positive attention he was garnering. At some point during the proceedings a crowd started to gather round, it became evident that many of the other pupils were having a difficult time with this particular technique and yet I was able to perform it after only just arriving the previous day. During this gathering the master had snuck into the room and was watching us perform, at first I didn’t notice but eventually his power was detectable over everyone else’s and once the others had noticed they all immediately began splitting off into pairs again to display for him. I must admit, there were a few people I did not think belonged here with the other students and as it turned out I was right, after a few moments the master made his way over to the instructor and whispered something before leaving. After class I was called to the front and told that tomorrow I would be reporting to the second floor for weapons training. Another night passes and still I am unable to decipher what this mystery within my programming means. I catch glimpses and faint traces, like chasing some sort of phantom through the corridors of my subconscious. It has become increasingly difficult to focus knowing that it is in there, doing whatever it happens to be doing and I cannot seem to stop it. Before I have any more time to ponder the situation the morning comes and with it, another days worth of work. Perhaps if I focus on that I can drown out the feeling of restlessness and uncertainty I feel. As I approached the second floor of the training hall there were even fewer students in the halls and I felt a bit concerned as some of them had recent injuries. Upon the start of class each of the students grabbed their chosen weapon and once again began by taking partners. It appeared as though I was out of luck as with the addition of me, there were an odd number of students. After a quick head count the instructor decided that I was to be paired with him to keep things even. Many of the students let out a sigh of relief; something tells me I had found the source of their recent injuries. I picked up a spear from the wall, something flexible and effective at the same time; my instructor took down a pair of straight swords and bowed to me, a favor I returned. He instructed the students to begin and turned to face me. He took his stance and began moving towards me, only to be met with a flurry of piercing stabs from my spear. I mostly targeting the weapons he was holding, which seemed to throw him off balance, he spent most of his time just trying to regain his form as to not leave himself completely defenseless. Once again I could feel the eyes of the pupils upon me and taking a moment to scan the room I found that they had all stopped to watch our match. My teacher took this time to attempt a counter offensive, this turned out to be a mistake on his part. Having the longer weapon and being much faster I was able to see through his attack and deliver a sweeping blow to his ankles, bringing him unceremoniously to the floor. I think the match would have taken a much more serious turn from then on out had it not been for the words “enough!” being yelled out from the staircase. It could have been the temple’s master speaking and sure enough, it was the old man with the sunglasses standing there yet again. “You will hereby report to the top floor of the temple for training from now on.” None of the others could quite believe what had just happened, but sure enough, class was over for me, at least for today. |

Day four of five: 1,015 words Something happened that night, something I’m not entirely sure I can properly explain. I think I had what can only be defined as a dream last night. As I rested I became far more relaxed than normal and my thoughts seemed to scatter about my brain. I saw myself facing an unknown opponent, his features were there, but they were so non-descript that I cannot seem to recall them in any detail. He seemed to almost mock me with the way he moved, as if I was an annoyance to him rather than a threat. Then something even stranger happened, I began to watch the scene unfold from a third person perspective, as if I was not I but rather someone simply watching as events unfolded. I launched a great many assaults against this ghostly warrior but to no avail, it seemed as though no matter what I tried he was perfectly suited to countering my movements. Then he began to go on the offensive, launching several volleys of energy blasts that I could barely dodge followed by a vicious assault with both his bare hands and weapons that seemed to appear from out of nowhere. The echo of his laughter seemed to resonate all around me, as if he was literally inside my head laughing at me. It was only after many of his blows hit home that something finally gave out within me. Something just snapped, I cannot describe it any other way. I let out a fierce scream and suddenly power started surging through me, even more so then when I transformed before. I could see waves of pure energy rippling through my body, shaking the very ground I was standing on and just when it looked like something was about to happen, the secret of whatever this strange power was, I awoke in my bed. Frustrated at not knowing what had happened or how it was even possible that I was dreaming, I was otherwise unharmed from the experience. I did the only thing I could, put the scene out of my mind and tried to concentrate on my work, today I would training in the highest area of the temple with the master himself and I needed to focus, much was expected of me I think. As I made my way through the courtyard and up the stairs of the temple I received many nods of approval from my fellow pupils. It would seem that many of the other students are quite happy for me and probably a little at ease knowing that someone can rapidly move up in their training if they show enough progress. When I arrived at the top floor and entered the room before me I found five other pupils waiting for me there. Each one was of a different race and all appeared significantly stronger than the other students. In fact, it dawned on me that I hadn’t even seen these students around during any of the meal times or chore times. A human, saiyan, kaeru, namekian, a majin and now an android. It was a motley crew to be sure, but each one of them seemed determined and serious, but without coming off as hostile. As the temple’s master came into the room we sat in quiet preparation for the day’s lesson. It was decided that since I had shown such promise and that the other pupils had been training here long than I, that a group battle would be held to test each participant’s abilities and see how far each of us had grown. The rules were simple, it was to be a non lethal sparring match against each other and the winner was to receive a special honor that the master would not discuss. We all rose from the floor and bowed before the master, turned to one another we offered another bow and much to my surprise, the second the master yelled for us to begin I found it difficult to keep up with everyone. It was obvious very quickly that these were no normal students and that I would actually have to treat them seriously if I was to come out the victor. The only upside to this was that they weren’t intent on ganging up on me, it seemed as though it was pure chaos, the six of us dashing about the room attacking one another almost randomly. It is an interesting dynamic to take part in a battle with multiple sides, you may spot an opening against one foe, but if you attempt to exploit it, you need to be wary of giving that same opportunity to another fighter. Surprisingly the saiyan was the first to fall, I had expected it to be the human, but as it was, the saiyan got a little carried away and stopped caring so much about his defenses. Next to go was the majin, the namekian had attempted to pierce his body using his extending limbs, this caused virtually no damage to the majin, that is until the namekian opened his palm and loosed a blast of ki that coated one of the windows in pink ooze for awhile. I on the other hand had my hands full dealing with the human and the kaeru. It was a very interesting standoff, neither one of us could seem to press any sort of advantage against the other two at the same time. The kaeru decided to try and change things up, taking a great mouthful of air, he began to expand a bit and the human and I both took this as a bad sign and thus we both attacked him. Being slightly faster I was able to stun him and the human finished him off with a series of kicks to the head and it was just in time too for the namekian had now turned his attention to us. Utilizing the skills I had learned before I split myself into 4 copies and began the assault, one going to the namekian as a distraction while the other 3 pummeled the human. |

Day five of five: 1,133 words It was a stroke of luck that the human was unaware of this technique and was quickly brought down. Pulling myself back together, the only remaining foe, the namekian of course, tried to launch a large beam of ki at me. It probably would have taken me out had I not placed my hand in its path and much to his surprise, absorbed the energy and sent a beam of my own back at him. This was the final straw for him as the beam cleanly took his feet out from under him. After some trouble standing the master decided to call the match in my favor and I eagerly awaited my reward. By this time most of the other fighters had recovered, or at least become conscious and coherent enough to understand what was being said. The master started to recall to us a story of when he was younger and still alive. It was a story of how he took on two young pupils and trained them in the ways of martial arts. The two students were originally rivals but grew to become such close friends that they sacrificed their lives for one another when the situation called for it. They eventually became even stronger than their master but they never lost sight of the lessons he had taught them, even years later when so much more had been learned they still treated him with respect and thanked him for without his guidance in their youth, they would never have become the fighters they were in their primes. After class the master had me take a short walk with him around the temple. He told me that I reminded him of one of his older students and that even though I had yet to make a choice as to where I stand in the grand scale of things, he didn’t sense any ill will from me and so he felt comfortable allowing me to train here. Our talk eventually turned to the reward for winning the match that he had proposed, this honor he would bestow upon the winner. He then revealed that tomorrow was a special day, it was the anniversary of the day that two of his students came to train with him, in fact it was the very same two students that he had told us about in class today. As a celebration they gather their friends together and hold a sort of anniversary party on this day each year and I was to be invited as an honorary pupil. That night we prepared for the trip, I took the liberty of preparing some of my favorite dishes that I’ve tasted since being allowed to roam the universe. I needed to go into town for some of the ingredients, but my particular set of skills made that an easy trip. The master was even kind enough to loan me a pair of sunglasses for the trip, he says I could use a little work in the style department. The following morning we left for our trip, we packed up a handy capsule corp. van that the master had and I was told that I was to drive us to the location, which was relayed to me one turn at a time by the master. I was beginning to think I had been brought along on this trip for less than honorable reasons, but it made little difference, I’ve always enjoyed relaxing journeys so I would take what I could from this one. We made our way through a set of winding mountain passes, they weren’t very tall, but the road was precarious. It wasn’t until we made it through the little valley of stone that I saw where we were heading, it was beautiful little beach nestled away in this secluded little valley. One of the master’s old students found it many years ago and it had been their little refuge ever since then. It was easy to spot the others, they had arrived before us and taken the liberty of setting things up and since the beach wasn’t that big to begin with, we parked and I unloaded the van and started following the master to the party. I could hardly believe my eyes. It would be difficult to arrange a gathering of more famous heroes if one tried. Even my other teachers were here, Tien, Krillin, Gohan and their respective families. They yelled out to me once they saw me and seemed rather surprised that I was here, but it paled in comparison how surprised I was when Gohan’s father called out to the master. “Hey master Roshi you made it!” He seemed overwhelmed with joy at seeing the master, but upon hearing this everything began to make sense. This whole time I had no idea I was training under the legendary master Roshi, the great turtle hermit himself. After the initial shock had passed, I regained my composure only to be pulled aside by Gohan in order to join in a peculiar game they were playing. There was a ball made out of some highly dense material that I had never seen before. The object was to use energy blasts to hit it into the air. Now anyone could shoot at it and the goal was to shoot it into the water to score a point, but of course anyone who doesn’t shoot at it will be trying to prevent you from getting it into the water to gain points and considering the players involved, it was quite the spectacle to watch as these legends of the past shot this poor ball around the sky for an afternoon. I won’t say who won, but I will say that it wasn’t me and by the end of the game we had been having so much fun that it wasn’t even a big deal who won. As it turns out, it was a good thing that I made so much food, I never realized that saiyans ate so much, but they were certainly appreciative of my sense of taste. At the end of day we returned home to the temple, at least I thought we were returning home. Master Roshi stopped once we got to the gates and bid me a fond goodbye. At first I didn’t understand but he explained that I had grown much more than I had realized in my time here, I had formed relationships with the other students and even gone so far as to inspire a few of them to renewed vigor. With that I took my leave of the strangely decorated temple, I wonder what other journeys the heavens hold for me and more than that, I began to wonder what Aiden was up to back in the real world. |
