“Guilty.”

“Guilty.”

“Guilty.”

The three Celestials told their verdicts one after the other. First to speak was always Seraphimon, the Head of Angels. Next to speak was the noble Celestial angel Ophanimon. And the third was always Cherubimon, the more beastly Celestial digimon. The Gekomon on the stage in front of the three pedestals where the three tall digimon stood hung his head down in despair. “The sentence?” Cherubimon asked the other two.

“Two thousand bits seems appropriate, don’t you think?” Seraphimon stated.

“I do,” said the green armored Angel, Ophanimon.

“Seems a bit steep… but I do to,” the pink Cherubimon said, agreeing with the others. The Gekomon was almost in tears.

“B-but…” the little green digimon started to speak. “How will I pay for that? I’m broke…”

“You should have thought of that before committing a crime.” Ophanimon’s voice was harsh but honest. “You know the laws of the Digital World.” The Gekomon, a former employee of the wealthy Barbamon, had stolen a great deal of bits he had been given the task of guarding. Barbamon found him and, surprisingly, did not take the law into his own hands by killing the digimon. He filed suit instead.

After the trial was settled and the Gekomon left, the three Celestials withdrew into the back room where they discussed trials, the Digital World, and other such matters.

“This kind of angers me,” Cherubimon stated. Normally his voice was calm and light. But occasionally his voice transformed into something rougher when he felt wronged. “Why are we defending that demon, Barbamon?”

“Because it is the law,” Seraphimon said plainly. “We have to abide by it. We made it ourselves, remember.”

“I just can’t believe that monster is still defended by the law.”

“Would you rather have him kill that poor Gekomon? I understand where you are coming from, but we can do nothing about it. There is no evidence that he really is the crook they claim him to be. No solid evidence, anyway. It’s justice, Cherubimon. The law.”

“We know he is guilty, Seraphimon!” The normally gentle face grew contorted in anger. “We know it’s true. If we bring him to court, we can pronounce him guilty and condemn him.”

“I would not pronounce him guilty.”

“Neither would I,” Ophanimon spoke up. “It’s not right, Cherubimon. Not until we get solid evidence.”

Cherubimon was silent.

There was a knock on the door. “Your highnesses!” It was the voice of Piddomon, an angel digimon and noble servant to the Celestials. “The next defendant is coming.”

The three Celestials stopped their conversation and passed through the door to the Celestial Chamber where they stood behind their respective pedestals once again.

“Who was the next subject?” Ophanimon asked.

“Beelzemon…” Seraphimon’s tone was grim. “His trial was moved to today.”

The three were silent until the doors across the chamber were opened, bringing in the demon digimon Beelzemon.

---

As he walked in, flanked by two Knightmon on either side of him and two Knightmon in front and behind him, he wore a grin on his face. It was more like a snarl. This was an evil creature, by the broadest definition. His eyes were crazed yet when he spoke it was calm and intuitive. At least, usually it was. He stood in the center of the platform in front of the Celestials as the Knightmon moved to their positions around the room, ready to stop Beelzemon if he tried anything.

The Celestials already knew of the crime he committed, as was customary before the trial. Their two servants, Angemon and Piddomon, always informed them about the digi-crime in need of their attention. Of all the crimes the three Celestials had been informed of, Beelzemon’s was among the worst.

“You know why you are here, Beelzemon.” Seraphimon meant it as a question. But as he spoke it, his words strained and the question became a statement. “Your crime.”

“I know what I have been accused of, yes.”

“And how do you plead?”

“Innocent, of course, your honor.”

“We already have the evidence of your crime, Beelzemon,” Ophanimon spat out. “Eye-witness reports, signature field evidence, everything. We know it was you.”

“Ah yes… But is it still proof enough?” His eyes still crazy as ever, his voice just as calm.

“You killed hundreds of digimon!” Ophanimon exclaimed. “You took their lives and you don’t even care!” She couldn’t keep her composure anymore. Something about this digimon really bothered her, dug underneath her skin. It was almost as if he was toying with the Celestials.

“The poor souls.” His grin never let up.

“ I don’t think we need to discuss this further, my fellow Celestials,” Seraphimon stated. “The verdict? Guilty.”

“Guilty,” echoed Ophanimon.

“Innocent.”

All eyes were on Cherubimon, including Beelzemon’s crazed pair. “What are you thinking, Cherubimon?” Seraphimon ordered.

“Why aren’t we discussing this further?” Cherubimon asked.

“We know it was him. We have the evidence—”

“Well I don’t think it’s enough evidence. I’m still not convinced.” There is never enough evidence before investigation with these two, thought Cherubimon. What about now? “Beelzemon is being unfairly treated. I demand we give him a full trial, my fellow Celestials.”

“It’s already overruled, Cherubimon!” Ophanimon exclaimed.

“No, Ophanimon,” Seraphimon said. “He is right.”

---

They proceeded to give the demon digimon a full trial, ultimately ending up with the same verdict. Beelzemon was guilty as sin. Even Cherubimon knew that. He was only making a point.

“The sentence?” Seraphimon asked his fellow judges.

“Scheduled deletion,” Ophanimon stated. Never before had she given such a harsh sentence. Never before did she have to.

The ever present snarl left Beelzemon’s face completely. His eyes even seemed to lose a little of the insanity they held as he realized the consequences for his actions.

“That is a little harsh, Ophanimon,” Cherubimon said. Of all the death Beelzemon caused, the three knew killing him would not bring any of the digimon back. Part of their code was to reserve the deletion sentence to only the most horrible of cases. Cherubimon and Seraphimon, the unlikely optimists, still believed his actions weren’t horrible enough for such a sentence.

“I agree, Cherubimon,” Seraphimon said. “I say we discuss this further. Until a true sentence is declared, he shall be given a default Life Imprisonment sentence, effective immediately.”

Beelzemon’s mouth changed back to its normal snarl. Then he began to chuckle. Then he just started laughing out loud. “What kind of kangaroo court is this? Ah haha! You can’t agree on a sentence for such a horrible creature as me?”

“Enough, Beelzemon,” Seraphimon ordered. The eight Knightmon guards escorted him away. While walking out of the room, the demon digimon turned his head, letting his despicable grin be the last thing the three Celestials see before he left the chamber.

The Celestials returned to the back room to discuss Beelzemon’s sentence further.
